Madhya Pradesh High Court halts NEET UG results 2025 over power cut complaint
A last-minute twist has landed NEET UG 2025 results on hold -- at least for now. The Madhya Pradesh High Court's Indore bench has temporarily stayed the NEET UG result declaration after a girl student filed a plea stating that a power cut during the test affected her performance.The NEET UG 2025 exam was held on May 4, when several parts of Indore were hit by a power outage due to bad weather. 'It is directed that till the next date of the hearing, the result of NEET-UG shall not be declared by the respondents,' the court said in its order.The court also pulled up the authorities for not appearing in the hearing despite earlier directions. Notices have been sent to the National Testing Agency (NTA), Central Government, and the MP West Zone Electricity Distribution Company asking them to reply within four weeks.The case will next be heard on June 30.RESULTS IMPACTED FOR OVER 21 LAKH STUDENTSThis stay order has now left nearly 21 lakh NEET UG 2025 candidates across India in limbo. Supreme Court grants interim protection from arrest to MP Journalist alleging police assault
The Supreme Court on Monday directed two Madhya Pradesh-based journalists, who have accused the Bhind superintendent of police and other officers of custodial assault and harassment, to approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court for relief. The court granted them interim protection from arrest for two weeks to allow time to file their plea. A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan told the petitioners—Shashikant Jatav and Amarkant Singh Chouhan—that it was not inclined to entertain their plea under Article 32 of the Constitution. However, noting the gravity of the allegations, the bench permitted them to seek remedy before the High Court. 'We are not entertaining the plea. However, looking at the allegations, we permit the petitioners to move the concerned high court within two weeks from today. Till the time the petitioners move high court …the petitioners shall not be arrested,' Justice Mishra said. The journalists have alleged that they were targeted by police due to their reporting on alleged corruption related to sand mining. In their plea, they sought protection from coercive action by the MP Police and claimed they feared for their lives. The petition also accused a senior police officer and his subordinates of kidnapping, custodial assault, and using casteist slurs against them. The bench previously questioned why the Bhind superintendent of police had not been made a party to the petition. "It is very easy to say all kinds of things against an IPS officer without making him a party. Whatever comes to your mind, just put it in black and white against the IPS officer," the bench remarked. The court also asked why the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi were named as respondents. The counsel for the journalists said the NHRC had been included because a complaint had been filed there, but agreed to remove it from the petition. On the inclusion of NCT of Delhi, it was submitted that both petitioners are currently residing in the national capital. Meanwhile, on May 28, the Delhi High Court had granted Chouhan interim protection for two months after he claimed that the Bhind SP had threatened him following an alleged assault in his office. The Supreme Court has listed the matter for further hearing on June 9.

SP MP Ramji Lal Suman threatens nationwide stir if Ambedkar statue not installed in Gwalior HC
Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman on Monday threatened to launch a nationwide stir if a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, is not installed at the premises of the Gwalior Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He alleged that authorities are preventing him from travelling to Gwalior, where he intended to raise his voice over the issue. Addressing a press conference in Agra, Suman claimed he and his supporters were stopped from proceeding to Gwalior despite their peaceful intentions. "We are being prevented from travelling not just to Gwalior but also to other districts of Uttar Pradesh. This is a direct attack on our democratic rights," he said. Suman expressed deep concern over what he described as "deliberate efforts to create controversy and disharmony in society". He alleged that even though the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court had approved the installation of the Ambedkar statue, the directive was not being followed. "This is not just a violation of a court order, it is an insult to the legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar,' he said. Warning of widespread protests, Suman said: "If the statue of Babasaheb is not installed at the premises of the Gwalior Bench, a nationwide movement will be launched." He also made a controversial comparison during his press conference, pointing out that a statue of Manu Maharaj -- believed by many to be the author of Manusmriti -- is installed outside the Rajasthan High Court in Jaipur, while Ambedkar's statue is being resisted in Gwalior. "Manu Maharaj was against the dignity of women and Dalits. And yet his statue stands tall, while Babasaheb, who gave us the Constitution, is being disrespected," he said. This isn't the first time Suman has stirred controversy. Earlier, he drew sharp criticism after calling 16th-century Rajput ruler Rana Sanga a "traitor" during a speech in the Rajya Sabha, which sparked outrage from political opponents. Suman said the current developments reflect the Madhya Pradesh government's worrying attitude towards Dalit representation and historical justice. "The message is clear -- certain forces are not comfortable with Ambedkar's legacy," he said.

Suspend ‘in-house' subject admission plans, state tells CU
1 2 3 Kolkata: The state higher education department has instructed Calcutta University to suspend its plans to open admissions for a few 'in-house' undergraduate courses, indicating that the centralised admission portal will start functioning shortly. Calcutta University made a decision following a faculty council meeting held on May 21 to initiate admission procedures for some 'in-house' UG courses like food and nutrition, human development, and music, leaving OBC criteria aside primarily to avoid legal issues. However, after the decision, the advertisement for admission was not published. Sources said officials from the higher education department told the university to slow down and not start the admission process before the centralised admission portal (CAP) goes live. A CU official said, "There should be parity between all undergraduate courses run across affiliated colleges and the university. We cannot start classes until the official date is declared by the state higher education department. We are ready to start the admission process any day as we are completely prepared." Calcutta University's interim vice-chancellor Santa Datta Dey said, "We are more concerned about the undergraduate courses across all our affiliated colleges that have been waiting for the admission process to begin. We took a decision for our in-house UG courses, but the entire system is stalled due to the OBC-related matter. How long will students wait in this uncertainty? The admission process can begin leaving this reservation-related dispute, and alternative arrangements can be made after the matter is resolved. " She also indicated that they were still consulting lawyers to get clear ideas about all legal provisions related to this matter. All 159 affiliated colleges under CU and other colleges and universities that admit students through the centralised admission portal are still waiting for the portal's commencement date. Rabindra Bharati University conducts UG admissions for fine arts and visual arts on its own, while admissions for other subjects is conducted through the admission portal. RBU has not decided any date for the commencement of admissions. However, private and autonomous institutions are midway through the process. Colleges like St Xavier's, Scottish Church and Shri Shikshayatan have already closed their admission portals and started publishing merit lists, too. A CU college principal said, "Private colleges are wrapping up their admissions while we are still uncertain about the commencement date. This is a clear sign of a challenge to fill seats this year, too. At the same time, Bengal will lose bright students as they will not wait for this delay."
