British mountaineer sets record 19th Everest summit
British mountaineer Kenton Cool has scaled Mount Everest for the 19th time, breaking his own record for the most climbs up the world's tallest mountain for a non-sherpa.
The 51-year-old, who was accompanied by Nepali sherpa Dorji Gyaljen, reached the 8,849m (29,000ft) high summit at 11:00 local time (04:15 GMT) on Sunday.
Mr Cool first climbed Everest in 2004 and has summited it almost yearly since.
Mr Gyaljen logged his 23rd climb up Everest. Another Nepali sherpa, Kami Rita, holds the record for making the most number of Everest summits at 30, and is also currently on the mountain attempting to set a new record.
Mr Cool's record-setting feat comes after at least two climbers - Subrata Ghosh from India and Philipp "PJ" Santiago II from the Philippines - died on Mount Everest this week.
After his 16th Everest ascent in 2022, Mr Cool appeared to play down his record, noting that many Nepali climbers have surpassed it.
"I'm really surprised by the interest... considering that so many of the sherpas have so many more ascents," he told AFP in an interview then.
Four days before the latest feat, Mr Cool told his Instagram followers that he "finally [had] a positive forecast" that will allow him to go ahead with the attempt.
"Let's hope that we manage to thread the needle with regard to numbers of climbers and we have a safe and enjoyable time up high," he wrote.
Fellow climbers hailed the achievement.
Mr Cool is a "great person to share stories from two decades on the mountain", American adventurer Adrian Ballinger told Reuters news agency.
"His experience, charisma, and strength make him a valuable part of the Everest community," says Mr Ballinger, who is currently guiding a team up Everest.
"Amazing, Kenton," wrote Jordanian mountaineer Mostafa Salameh, who is one of only 20 people to complete the climb the highest mountains on all seven continents and conquer the North and South Poles.
Mr Cool is also a mountain guide who has lead British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, among others, on several notable climbs including Everest.

They have also been a major force at continental level, winning the AFC Champions League on four occasions — more than any other team in Asia. The 2024-25 season was a slight let-down, however. Al Hilal finished second to Al Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League and were knocked out of the AFC Champions League by Al Ahli at the semi-final stage. To most Saudi clubs, that would still look like a decent season, but standards at Al Hilal are higher than they are elsewhere. As winners of the 2021 AFC Champions League. It is worth noting, too, that Al Hilal have some history with the Club World Cup in its old format: they participated in 2019, 2021 and 2022, and even reached the final in that final year thanks to a semi-final win over Brazilian giants Flamengo. Al Hilal are under new big-name management: Simone Inzaghi, twice a UEFA Champions League finalist with Inter, including last month, was appointed at the start of June. That makes it hard to be too certain about how the team will line-up, not least because the squad does not look ideally suited to the Italian's favoured 3-5-2 system. The smart move would probably be to build on the work of his predecessor, Jorge Jesus, whose attacking brand of football brought the best from wingers Malcom and Salem Al-Dawsari in particular. Really, though, it highlighted just how well he had done to get an ageing squad so far in the competition. Inzaghi may not quite be on the level of the superstar coaches, but he is a canny tactician and, at 49, still has a lot of runway ahead of him. His arrival is undoubtedly a major coup for Al Hilal and Saudi football. To call Al-Dawsari a fan favourite would be to undersell things. Al Hilal's captain is the embodiment of the club, a link between the past and the future. He has now been there for 14 seasons, with only a very brief — and forgettable — loan spell at Villarreal in the middle. His experience sets the tone both on and off the field. Crucially, he has also improved with age. Al-Dawsari will be 34 in August, but the 2024-25 season was arguably his best yet: he scored 15 goals and set up 15 more in the Saudi Pro League, a remarkable return. If Al Hilal do spring a surprise in the U.S., expect the winger to play a key role. A couple of years ago, Marcos Leonardo was seen as one of the rising stars of Brazilian football. A product of the Santos youth system, he racked up 50 senior goals before his 21st birthday, starred for his country at the Under-20 World Cup, and earned a transfer to Benfica. It didn't really work out for him in Portugal, but he has looked a lot more like his old self since joining Al Hilal last summer. He managed 25 goals in all competitions in 2024-25 — a decent tally whichever way you cut it, but especially impressive because he was sharing game time with former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. Al Hilal are known for roping pop stars in to create new songs about the team and its fans. Syrian singer Assala released one in 2020, which included lyrics such as 'Your place is the summit' and 'Your attention is on the sky above'. Another, sung by Saudi artist Ayed, was a little more down-to-earth in its content. 'Play Al Hilal, your fans are behind you,' it went. 'The stadium shook for you tonight. Al Hilal, you won the league with heroism and action. Your love has been passed down from generation to generation, and every day that love grows stronger.' The Riyadh derby against Al Nassr tends to be the match upon which fans place most importance. Al Hilal's 5-1 win over their neighbours in 2017 is still seen as one of the club's most memorable results, although there have been a few more big wins in the years since. There is also a slightly more collegiate rivalry with Al Ittihad, who have provided the stiffest challenge to Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League in recent decades. Al Hilal have had no fewer than 19 Brazilian coaches over the years, many of whom went back for multiple spells. The roll call includes some big names, too, such as Mario Zagallo and Toninho Cerezo. Incredibly, there was a run of nine Brazilians in a row between November 1988 and June 1996. It would be nice to see Inzaghi stick it to his critics. Saudi Arabia's World Cup hopes hinge on a near-impossible task against Australia
A Saudi squad that has scored six goals through nine qualifying games needs to beat Australia by a five-goal margin to earn a direct spot at the 2026 World Cup. Head coach Herve Renard knows it's an extremely unlikely outcome for his Saudi team, but he's urging his players to go all in Tuesday in the last game of the third round of Asian qualifying for next year's global tournament. 'The door is closed but we have to try to qualify even if it is through the window,' Renard said after his team's 2-0 win over Bahrain last week kept Saudi. 'Everything must go very well for us if we are to qualify; we have to score goals.' Anything less than a five-goal deficit means Australia — in second spot in Group C — qualifies for a seventh World Cup. The last time the Socceroos lost by such a margin was in successive 6-0 defeats against Brazil and France in 2013. The Australians have scored 14 goals and conceded six through nine qualifiers. After successive World Cup qualifications through the playoffs, Australia is close to securing a direct route but coach Tony Popovic is taking nothing for granted. 'We need to do a job in Saudi,' Popovic said. 'We're in a great position, but we need to finish it off.' Popovic has only been in the job since September, stepping in after Graham Arnold resigned after collecting just one point in the group's first two qualification games. 'It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do,' he said. 'And we're very close now to achieving our goal.' Asia has been allocated eight places at the 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The top two teams in each of the three groups in this round advance directly. The third- and fourth-place teams in each group go into another round vying for two more places. Iran and Uzbekistan have qualified from Group A, and South Korea and Jordan have qualified from Group B. Oman, meanwhile, is fourth in Group B, a point ahead of the Palestinian team in fifth place, with the two teams meeting in Amman on Tuesday.
