Birmingham skateboarders hope to inspire future Olympians
A group of skateboarding enthusiasts are hoping a festival this weekend could uncover the Olympic skateboarders of the future.Skaters from Birmingham Skate Spaces (BSS), a community interest community (CIC), are taking part in the tenth B-Side Hip-Hop Festival on Saturday.It is the group's first appearance at the festival - but director Berni Good says it makes perfect sense."Skateboarding, and graffiti, and hip-hop, all kind of sit side by side with each other," she explained.
Organised by the Birmingham Hippodrome and other creative groups, the festival includes graffiti classes, dance battles, basketball and music.
The centrepiece of BSS' stand is a mini ramp, which has been built specially for the festival.It is modular, meaning it can be taken apart and set up elsewhere for future events.Its construction was funded by a grant from the governement's Shared Prosperity Fund and used as an opportunity to mentor 10 young people, who helped build it."So these young people who weren't necessarily in employment, education or training came along... and we equipped them with skills that they could then [use to] go out and seek employment," said Ms Good.
BSS says on its website it aims to improve "the wellbeing, cultural prosperity and health of Birmingham by building outdoor and indoor skateparks".Ms Good said skateboarding was also effective at allowing young people to feel part of a community and giving them a safe space in which to socialise.Its skate part at Bournbrook - which two years ago was saved from closure - was built entirely by volunteers."When you put your blood, sweat and tears into something, you have more of a sense of ownership of it," said Ms Good. "You're learning the skill, but you are also owning and being part of a community."
On Saturday, the mini ramp will be set up outside the Hippodrome, where coaches from Skateboard GB will be giving free lessons - with all equipment provided - before professional skateboarders put on a demonstration.Ms Good cites Bombette Martin - the first skateboarder to compete in the Olympics, and who grew up partly in Birmingham - as an example of what can be achieved by young people."It's all about inspiring people to get on the board, show them how to do it and give them the ability to participate in this wonderful sport - that is now in the Olympics," she said."There's no reason why we can't have some Brummies rocking up at the Olympics in the future."

She used to tour around the world with Michael Jackson and David Bowie, consumed by a life of hedonism - but Kim Wilde 's life at 64 years old is... not so wild. In a far cry from her naked rock star days, the Kids In America hitmaker has traded the booze and parties for a life of gardening, healthy eating and cold plunges. Speaking to The Sunday Times, Kim spoke about how her life has changed in the years since she was a travelling rock star. Kim trained as a horticulturist at Capel Manor College in Enfield years ago to learn how to make a garden for her children - and was later invited as a celebrity by Channel 4 to act as a designer for their programme Better Gardens. 'After winter I'm desperate for light, so I'll often be found wandering in my garden before 7am — I don't want to miss anything coming back to life,' she said. And recently she's developed a passion for cold plunges, which she takes in her own pool in her specially cultivated garden. Another way Kim's life has changed is her diet, gone are the days of fast food and booze - with the star sober for a decade and adopting a 'healthier' approach to eating. Kim's career has been a whirlwind journey through music, TV, and gardening, marked by reinvention and enduring popularity. Her international anthem and debut single, Kids In America was the work of her brother Ricky and dad, original British rock 'n' roller Marty Wilde. It became a defining anthem of the '80s and at one stage she was shifting 60,000 copies a day. She had seven more Top Ten singles in the UK but never a number one, however her reworking of the Motown classic You Keep Me Hangin' On, which topped the US Billboard chart in 1986. During this time she released her self-titled debut album, Kim Wilde, which included hits like Chequered Love and established her as a new pop sensation. She went on to release an array of albums which saw even more success after she released Another Step, which included the global hit You Keep Me Hangin' On - a cover of The Supremes' classic that topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In 1987 Michael Jackson invited Kim to join him on his Bad tour and open 33 shows across Europe and the UK. She observed a superstar alone in his own universe. Two years after the tour, her own world came crashing down the day after her 30th birthday, when it dawned that her time as a pop phenomenon might be over. After a few years of focusing on her personal life, Kim transitioned to television, becoming a popular presenter and personality in the UK. And in 2000, she discovered a passion for gardening and authored several books. She also became a regular presenter on gardening shows, bringing her knowledge and enthusiasm to a new audience and connecting with her old die-hard fans in a new way. Prison officers should be armed, say Conservatives
Prison officers dealing with violent inmates should be armed, the shadow justice secretary has said. Specialist guards should have Taser stun guns and baton rounds - a less lethal alternative to traditional bullets - to give them "confidence" in handling threats, Robert Jenrick told the BBC. The Conservatives said secure armouries should be introduced at maximum security jails and used as a last officers in adult male prisons currently only carry an extendable baton and Pava, a synthetic pepper spray. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said some prison officers will use Tasers this summer on a trial basis, but argued that giving them lethal weapons would put them at greater Prison Officers' Association (POA), a union, called for stronger protection for staff after a string of attacks. It said stun guns should be made available to officers working in the UK's most dangerous to the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, Jenrick said that without intervention it was "only a matter of time" before a prison officer was "held hostage and potentially killed".He added that under his proposals, officers would not be "walking the wings" with lethal weapons, but would "have access to them if they need them".The Conservative's call for officers to be armed follows a review conducted for the party by former prison governor Ian other policies, the party also wants to see high-collar stab vests immediately rolled out to frontline officers. 'Dire record' In response to the proposals, Labour said it was "cleaning up the mess" after the Conservatives' "dire record" in office."In 14 years they added fewer than 500 prison places in total and closed 1,600 cells in the high-security estate as assaults on prison officers soared and experienced officers quit," a party spokesperson his BBC interview, Jenrick, who held various ministerial roles in the last government, conceded that his party "should have done more" in office."But we're in opposition now, it is my job to bring forward good, sensible solutions," he MoJ said protective body armour is used in segregation units and specialist areas for situations that are deemed as high added that a "snap review" into whether it should be used more routinely will report in the coming days.
