"Not one Kashmiri Pandit": Congress' Vivek Tankha criticises multi-party delegation list

India Gazette18-05-2025

New Delhi [India], May 18 (ANI): As India gears up to send an all-party delegation to visit key partner countries to highlight cross-border terrorism in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha on Sunday expressed strong reservations over the absence of representatives from Kashmiri Pandit community.
Alleging that the government added its favourite personalities to the list of seven multi-party delegations, which aims to highlight the Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that Kashmiri Pandits seem like a 'forgotten species'.
'The concept of sending 7 All Party delegations to world capitals is laudable. But unfortunately it reads like a long List of Govt favourites barring some exceptions!! The issue is 'J&K' but not one Kashmiri Pandit in the any of the 7 delegations. Looks (like) a forgotten specie(s),' Tankha posted on X.
He further said that it was 'disturbing' that Kashmiri Pandits were not named under the list presented by either the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) or in the four names given by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi.
'What is disturbing that KPs are neither part of PMO India list nor are part of the list of four forwarded by LOP!! In a Nationally represented delegation not one person fr(om) Madhya Pradesh. Must be an undeserving state,' he added.
His reaction comes after Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju released a list of an all-party delegation (divided into seven groups) set to visit key partner countries in an effort to expose Pakistan's support for terrorism and highlight India's policy of zero-tolerance on terrorism on the global stage.
The list includes MPs from multiple parties, divided into seven groups of 8-9 members. A leader has been assigned for each group, who will lead the delegation at a global level.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, while posting the list on Saturday, also highlighted how the Members of Parliament have shown a united stance of 'One mission. One message. One Bharat.' (ANI)

India's defence exports surged by 1,100 pc in last 10 years: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has transformed into an emerging defence exporter, strengthening national security and becoming a trusted partner in global peace. 'India's defence sector has undergone a major transformation in the last decade. India's defence exports have grown by over 1,100% in the last decade from ₹1,941 crore in 2014 to an all-time high of ₹23,662 crore in 2024. The country now exports military hardware to over 100 countries,' the Finance Minister said in a statement on X. She underscored that 75 per cent of the defence capital acquisition budget has been earmarked for domestic production in the financial year 2025-26. The Finance Minister further pointed out that over 5,000 items have been added to the defence indigenisation lists as part of the government's Aatmanirbharta campaign. India's defence production, which was only Rs 43,000 crore 10 to 11 years ago, has now crossed a record figure of Rs 1,46,000 crore, with the private sector's contribution of over Rs 32,000 crore. The government's Make-in-India campaign has turned out to be crucial for security, with the use of indigenous systems during Operation Sindoor proving that India has the power to penetrate any armour of the enemy. FM Sitharaman also highlighted the national security and foreign policy achievements of the Modi government. She mentioned the success of Operation Sindoor, in which over 100 terrorists were killed in the missile attacks on nine terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Among the foreign policy initiatives undertaken for the security of Indian nationals, the Finance Minister has listed the evacuation of over 22,500 Indians from Ukraine after the launch of Russia's military operation, while another 3,000 Indians were brought back home from conflict-torn Sudan. Sitharaman has also highlighted India's role as a vaccine supplier to the world during the devastating Covid-19 outbreak. The country supplied over 30 crore vaccine doses to more than 100 countries to contain the spread of the deadly disease, she added.

PM Modi to visit Cyprus amid closer Pakistan-Turkey alignment after India's Operation Sindoor

PM Modi will visit Cyprus and Croatia as part of India's growing outreach to Europe, en route to and from the G7 Summit in Canada. The visit comes amid strained ties with Turkey and rising Ankara-Islamabad solidarity after India's recent counter-terror operation. read more As part of India's deepening engagement with Europe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus on his way to Canada for the G7 Summit, and Croatia on his return. Visit comes amid strained Turkey ties PM Modi's visit to Cyprus – a country in conflict with Turkey since 1974 – comes in the backdrop of growing Ankara-Islamabad solidarity following India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Strategic EU partners Both Cyprus and Croatia are members of the European Union. Notably, Cyprus is set to assume the rotating presidency of the EU Council in the first half of next year. Modi was earlier scheduled to visit Croatia, along with the Netherlands and Norway, last month, but the trip was postponed due to heightened military tensions with Pakistan. G7 Summit in Canada The G7 Summit will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from 15 to 17 June. Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the outreach session on the final day. Since the invitation from Canada came at short notice, the details of his programme are still being finalised. Efforts are underway to organise bilateral meetings on the sidelines. Historic Cyprus visit Modi's visit to Cyprus will be closely watched, as it marks only the third visit by an Indian Prime Minister—after A B Vajpayee in 2002 and Indira Gandhi in 1983. The visit comes amid strained ties between India and Turkey, which openly supported Pakistan during last month's India-Pakistan military confrontation. Background: The Cyprus-Turkey conflict The Cyprus-Turkey conflict is a decades-old territorial and political dispute rooted in ethnic tensions and rival national interests. The conflict escalated in 1974, when Turkey invaded the northern part of Cyprus following a Greek-backed coup that sought to unify the island with the Greek mainland. Turkey claimed its intervention was to protect the Turkish Cypriot minority. However, the invasion led to the division of the island into two parts. Today, the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus, governed by Greek Cypriots, controls the southern two-thirds of the island and is a member of the European Union. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The northern third is administered by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is recognised only by Turkey. A UN-patrolled buffer zone separates the two regions.

Delhi, Bengaluru To Get Flying Buses? Gadkari Outlines Govt's Plans To Cut Traffic Woes

Last Updated: Nitin Gadkari has detailed the government's plans to ease the traffic problems in major cities of the country, including Delhi and Bengaluru. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has outlined the future of the Indian transport system in major cities of the country, which will have an air pod system and flash-charging electric buses. These transportation initiatives will ease the problem of traffic congestion, bringing relief to the residents from long, tiring journeys. Detailing the government's plan in this direction, Gadkari said that a pod system in the air is being planned along the Dhaula Kuan-Manesar route. 'We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road," the Union Minister told news agency ANI. He also underlined that a similar study is being carried out in Bengaluru – a city which is infamous for its long traffic congestion, particularly during rainfall. #WATCH | When asked about 'flying buses', Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says, '…We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road. A pod-based transport system consists of small, driverless electric vehicles that run on raised tracks by either hanging from rails above or running on top of them. They are similar to on-demand taxis, wherein one can call a pod when in need and transit from one place to another without any stoppage. A pod can carry around five to six people. Gadkari said that the government has started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur, which has 135 seats. This bus will run at a speed of 120 km/h and will stop for 30 seconds to recharge and run again. 'We have also started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur with 135 seats. This bus will be executive class with TVs in front. It will run on the road to Nagpur. The bus will have a speed of 120 kmph. It will stop for 30 seconds after every 40 kilometres, people will get off and get on. The bus will get charged in 30 seconds and will start again…The bus will be less expensive because it will require less battery power," he detailed, highlighting that the fare on such buses will be 30% lower compared to diesel buses. Upon successful completion of the initiative in Nagpur, the government will roll out the same buses from Delhi to Jaipur, Delhi to Dehradun, Bangalore to Chennai, Mumbai to Nashik, and Pune, the Minister announced.
