Sabah chocolatiers shine at MICF 2025, eye global markets

KOTA KINABALU (May 25): The Malaysia International Cocoa Festival (MICF) 2025 is providing more than just a stage for showcasing locally produced chocolates; it is also opening doors for cocoa industry players to expand their marketing reach.
For Noorziah Laugan Terki, founder of the Famles handmade chocolate brand, events like MICF are invaluable, especially for Sabah's homegrown cocoa and chocolate entrepreneurs.
Noorziah, who has been involved in chocolate exhibitions since 2005, now offers nine different chocolate flavours. Among her best-selling creations are those infused with bird's eye chili, durian, tiramisu, almond and mint.
'In addition to participating in local events, I've also joined international cocoa festivals in China, the Philippines and Brunei,' she said when met at the MICF.
'I even had a three-year collaboration with a chocolatier in Guangzhou, China, where I had the opportunity to produce my own line of chocolates.'
She believes that events like MICF are key to promoting her brand while tapping into broader markets through the exposure brought by large crowds.
Revyra Chocolate and Confectionery Sdn Bhd director Mohamad Hanafia Mohamad Yunus echoed similar sentiments.
He said their latest creation, the 'Dubai-Style Chocolate', has quickly become a hot favourite since its launch in March this year.
'We've consistently supported programmes organised by the Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) and have taken part in many such events,' he said.
'These initiatives not only help boost our brand visibility but also elevate the profile of local chocolate products overall.
'This is our second time participating in an event in Sabah. While the market here is different from Peninsular Malaysia, there are still many opportunities to explore,' he added.
Hanafia also noted that MICF 2025 offers a valuable opportunity for his company to connect with potential distributors interested in bringing their products into the Sabah market.
MICF 2025 is taking place over four days at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), featuring a wide range of engaging activities and exciting prizes for visitors, including a car giveaway.
This marks the first time the festival is being held in Sabah, with approximately 150 booths showcasing and selling a diverse selection of chocolate-based products.

The tax revision aims to strengthen the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base. The plan is to channel the extra funds collected towards improving public services and expanding the social safety net. The good news is essential daily goods are not taxed (taxed at 0%). These include chicken, beef, mutton, fish, prawns, squid, local vegetables and fruits, rice, barley, oats, wheat, flour, canned sardines, sugar, salt, white bread, pasta, vermicelli, noodles, instant noodles, milk, cooking oil, medicine, medical devices, books, journals, newspapers and pet food. Key construction materials (cements, stone, sand) and agricultural inputs like fertilisers, pesticides, and agricultural and livestock machinery are exempt from being taxed as well. However, some non-essential goods will be taxed at 5% and these include king crab, salmon, cod, truffle mushrooms, imported fruits (your apples, oranges, grapes, berries etc), essential oils, silk fabrics, and industrial machinery. Meanwhile, premium items like racing bicycles and antique hand-painted artworks will be taxed at 10%. KENINGAU: The Malaysian Cocoa Board (MCB) will continue to play an active role in supporting the development of the country's cocoa industry, particularly in Sabah's Interior region. Its Chairman Datuk Matbali Musah, said various initiatives are being implemented, including the Cocoa Farm Rehabilitation Programme, agricultural input assistance, research on superior cocoa varieties, and technical guidance for farmers. Advertisement He said these efforts are important to ensure that the dried cocoa beans produced meet high quality standards, thereby increasing market value and enhancing Malaysia's reputation in the international cocoa market. Matbali, who is also the Member of Parliament for Sipitang, said this while officiating the Cocoa Cluster Strengthening Programme for the Interior Zone of Sabah held here, on Thursday. Organised by the MCB, the programme brought together more than 200 participants from various zones, including Keningau, Tenom, Sook, Tambunan, and Nabawan. 'This is a proud achievement because we are not only sharing knowledge but also fostering a sense of unity among the cocoa community in Sabah,' he said. Matbali also stressed the importance of good agricultural practices, sustainable pest and disease management, and the adoption of the latest cocoa farming technologies. He said MCB hopes cocoa farmers in Sabah will take further steps by joining cooperatives and becoming involved in downstream processing, including the production of locally made chocolate products. He expressed confidence that with support from entities such as Koperasi Koko Kluster Sabah Berhad, the cocoa industry holds great potential to stimulate the local economy and attract interest from rural youth. Uzbekistan, one of the fastest-rising national teams in Asia, drew 0-0 with the UAE in Abu Dhabi to take the second automatic spot in Group A, although top place is still in play after already qualified Iran lost 1-0 to Qatar in Doha.
