Reagan advances to first state volleyball final; Southwest survives in five sets

Miami Herald17-05-2025

Southwest and Winter Park will meet again.
Southwest toppled a resilient Westlake Seminole Ridge boys volleyball team, 3-2, in a Class 3A state semifinal Friday night at Polk State College.
Southwest (25-5) will now square off against defending state champions Winter Park at 7 p.m. Saturday for the FHSAA 3A state title.
'It's going to be a dogfight,' Southwest coach Joshua Perez said. 'I know how they are and everyone just wants to draw blood, and that is what we are here for.'
The matchup will mark the third consecutive season the two teams have faced each other in the state championship game.
'It's funny because everybody had us out this entire season, too,' Perez said. 'They had both of us out. We were in a tournament in Orlando and the chatter was 'Southwest is over,' and 'Winter Park is over.'
'But we understand it's a long season and it's a learning curve the entire way. Our team did a good job of learning, and they turned the corner and did everything I expected to see.'
Winter Park advanced after shutting out Winter Garden Horizon 3-0.
Winter Park won the state title last year, knocking off Southwest in five sets. Southwest won the state title in 2023 and Winter Park took home the title in 2022.
Against Seminole Ridge, Southwest won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-16 and appeared to be on its way to a 3-0 sweep. But Seminole Ridge courageously battled back and won the next two sets 22-25 and 16-25 to force a fifth set. But Southwest regrouped at crunch time and put Seminole Ridge away 15-10.
'At the end of the day it really doesn't matter,' Perez said. 'A ball gets tossed up, and that is the beauty of sports, it can fall either way. We weren't too disciplined and we kind of let some things slip by. We paid the consequences against a team that passes well and is very athletic.'
Southwest was led by Juanmarco Diaz with 22 kills and 19 digs. Kevin Munoz added 15 kills and eight digs while Dereck Ocasio dished out 13 kills with four passes and two digs.
'It is definitely a feel-good moment,' Diaz said. 'We are a whole new team. We have a whole bunch of new guys. We have four sophomores on the court with me. I believe this rematch with Winter Park will be a very respectful competitive game.'
REAGAN ADVANCES TO STATE FINAL
Reagan failed to win their district title again, but suddenly no one cares. The Bison didn't need it to reach the state title game.
Reagan advanced to the Class 2A state finals on Friday after turning back Gulf Breeze, 3-1, in a semifinal.
Reagan will face Lake Howell Saturday at 4 p.m. for the 2A state championship. Lake Howell advanced after beating Riviera Beach Suncoast 3-0.
'I am extremely happy,' Reagan coach Joshua Garavito said. 'Last year we had an extremely heartbreaking loss in districts. I couldn't have asked for a better story than to come over here.
'My school has had trouble the past few years always failing at districts. It's always been a dream of mine to get the win at districts but this year, unfortunately, we did not get the district title but we did get the regional title, and we're here.'
Reagan won the first set 25-18 but was nipped 24-26 in the second set before seizing the next two 25-23 and 25-15.
'I would have preferred (to win in) three but I did not want to go five,' Garavito said. 'Had we gone five, I am sure we would have gotten it.
'It was just all attitude (during the second-set loss). We were down and not playing our game. Every time they got a point on us, we didn't huddle like we normally do. It was just over-confidence.'
Reagan was led by William Camacho with 21 kills, 33 passes, three aces and seven digs. Michael Perez and Diego Cobena both recorded 10 kills.
'It's been pretty hard competition but I am proud of this team because they are playing hard,' Reagan junior libero Santiago Mejia said. 'We've been training a lot so we deserve it.'
'I feel like the main focus here should be attitude. If you have a great attitude and you are solid with that, you can go anywhere.'

2025 UFL MVP Power Rankings: Jordan Ta'amu on top as regular season comes to a close

With the UFL regular season coming to a close, there are just three players to consider for the title of UFL MVP. But one stands above the rest. Here's a look at my updated MVP rankings following Week 10: 3. Arlington Renegades QB Luis Perez Week 10 stat line: 26-of-32 for 283 passing yards Week 10 result: 23-6 win over San Antonio Perez is the only quarterback to start every game for his team this season, which is no small feat in a league that is built around playing 12 consecutive weeks with 10 of those weeks counting toward the regular season. For the second year in a row, Perez has won the UFL passing title. This year, he did while being the only passer to complete at least 70% of his passes. Had the Arlington Renegades made the playoffs, Perez might've won the UFL MVP for his consistency in excellence alone. As it stands, the 2023 XFL champions enter this offseason with a .500 record but with the foundation to push for their first UFL playoff appearance next season. 2. Michigan Panthers QB Bryce Perkins Week 10 stat line: N/A Week 10 result: 19-12 loss to Houston Despite missing three games this season, UFL coaches still opted to name Perkins to the All-UFL team — the only QB to receive that honor. With that acknowledgment, it's clear that the Panthers wouldn't be a postseason team for a second year in a row if not for Perkins' efforts as a backup and then a starter for Mike Nolan's team. His 1,342 passing yards with nine passing and four rushing touchdowns is remarkable given the sample size in a league that is defined by its quarterback play. Frequently, the strength of that position will give an indication of the ceiling the team has, and Perkins' play demonstrated that, as the Panthers are capable of winning their first UFL championship. 1. DC Defenders QB Jordan Ta'amu Week 10 stat line: N/A Week 10 result: 13-8 loss to St. Louis No player has been more important to his team's winning than Ta'amu. Had he not sat out the final game of the season, Ta'amu might've finished No. 1 in passing yards and touchdowns. Through nine games, Ta'amu was the only player to throw for more than 2,100 yards while averaging 13.9 yards per completion. The Defenders did not finish as strong as they started, but their signature wins came early. Ta'amu led them to a Week 1 victory against the defending UFL champs, who they could meet in the UFL title game. Then in Week 3, he led them to a 27-15 win against the St. Louis Battlehawks in St. Louis. No doubt, Ta'amu will remember that when the Defenders and Battlehawks meet again this weekend in St. Louis for the XFL Conference Championship. Angelina Elias breaks tie with double as St. Laurence gets past Evergreen Park. Her strength? ‘That high energy.'

Senoir catcher Angelina Elias has a favorite phrase she likes to use when talking to her pitchers for St. Laurence. It's a mental game. 'With the amount of pressure a pitcher has, we just need it as a check,' Elias said. 'It's like, 'Keep your head up no matter what. You worked hard to get here.' 'We need to hit the spots. Don't overthink it. Have confidence.' She gave that advice to herself Tuesday and it paid off handsomely for the host Vikings, who beat Evergreen Park 7-2 in a Class 3A St. Laurence Sectional semifinal game in Burbank. Elias hit a tiebreaking double in the sixth inning for the Vikings (21-7), who advanced to play Nazareth (16-15) at 4 p.m. Friday for the sectional title. Jordan Ogean added two hits and three RBIs for St. Laurence. Aoibhe Landers had two hits, while Vanessa Kates reached base four times and tripled. Maddie Misch worked 5 2/3 innings in relief. Molly Goyke reached base twice and scored a run for Evergreen Park (18-15). Elias, meanwhile, is stepping up in the clutch for the Vikings during her only season as the starting catcher. As a junior, she sat behind senior Norah Burke. 'At first, it was just a learning experience on the bench, seeing some plays I could do,' Elias saId. 'I also used it to learn from the mistakes I saw from the bench. 'I'm glad that I have the chance to catch this season for St. Laurence. I consider it a blessing.' Elias showed senior moxie in a few ways during Tuesday's victory. First, she put Misch in a good frame of mind. The junior right-hander came on in relief in the second inning with one on, one out and the Vikings trailing 2-0. 'She kept telling me, 'This is just a mental game, this is just a mental game,'' Misch said. 'I totally agreed with her. She calmed the game, helped us play our game. 'Ange is always supporting her teammates. She's always coming up every single pitch to talk to her pitchers. She always has that high energy.' Elias made her first big play on a catch and sweep tag at home plate on a throw from third base by Ogean. It thwarted a scoring chance by Evergreen Park in the top of the fourth. Watching and learning as a junior paid off when St. Laurence coach Teagan Walsh noticed. 'Yes, she's solid behind the plate,' Walsh said. 'She had to wait her turn to get that starting spot, but she worked her heart out. She just does everything the right way. 'Angelina always hypes her pitchers, which is probably one of my favorite things. And she takes charge. She has grown so much this season with her communication and her IQ of the game.' Ogean tied the game at 2-2 for the Vikings with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth. After Alyssa Cervantes doubled to lead off the sixth, Elias stepped to the plate with redemption in mind. Two innings earlier, Elias came up with runners on second and third with two outs and took a called third strike. Not this time. Elias worked the count to 2-2, then fouled off two more pitches before hitting a rope to the gap in right-center for an RBI double. She wasn't going down looking. 'I was like, 'No, you have to make some adjustments to help my team score this run,'' Elias said. 'It felt so good when I hit the ball.' Indeed, when Elias got to second base, she showed just how good it felt. She jumped and clapped with all of that high energy. 'Yeah, it was just seeing the team excited and pumped up that we can continue this journey,' Elias said. 'It doesn't matter the score. We'll go like it's game on.'

UFL Week 10 By The Numbers: Defenders, Battlehawks tie for most All-UFL selections

The 10th and final week of the 2025 UFL regular season gave football fans a preview of what to expect in the playoffs, and expectations are high for the four remaining teams — the St. Louis Battlehawks , Birmingham Stallions , Michigan Panthers and DC Defenders . Here are the numbers to know after Week 10. 2: Birmingham LB Tae Crowder became the first player in UFL history with two pick-sixes in a single game. The former "Mr. Irrelevant" of the 2020 NFL Draft got things started with his first score in the opening quarter and capped it off with another in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Showboats on his own in the Stallions' 46-9 blowout victory. 7: Following the conclusion of the regular season, DC and St Louis tied for the most All-UFL selections in the league this season with seven apiece. DC was led by their four players on the All-Defense team: DT Joe Wallace, Edge Derick Roberson, LB Anthony Hines and CB Deandre Baker. The Battlehawks were led by RB Jacob Saylors, along with the league leader in sacks, Pita Taumoepenu, and kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, who only missed one field goal all season. Those two teams will meet in the XFL Conference Championship Game at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday on FOX. 8: St Louis picked up its eighth win of the season in a rain-soaked 13-8 victory over DC on Friday. The Battlehawks finished the regular season with the league's best record after closing the season on a six-game win streak. By only allowing eight points in the game, St Louis' No. 1-ranked scoring defense held opponents to single digits in five of its 10 games this season. 46: Birmingham's 46 points in a win over Memphis were the most scored by a team in any game in the UFL this season and the second most in league history. The Stallions were one point shy of the UFL record set by Arlington last season when they scored 47 points – also against Memphis. 100: Since J'Mar Smith took over as the starting QB for the Stallions with three weeks to play in the regular season, Birmingham has scored 100 points (or 33.3 points per game). Smith's return to the defending champions has been one of the stories of the season in the UFL. 120: Despite only becoming the primary ballcarrier in Week 7, San Antonio's Jashaun Corbin finished the season by averaging 120 total yards over his last four games. Corbin's late-season surge also landed him an All-UFL selection and the rushing title for 2025. 283: Arlington QB Luis Perez finished out the season in style, going 26-32 for 283 yards with a rush TD in the Renegades' 23-6 win over the Brahmas. With that performance, Perez passed DC's Jordan Ta'amu for the league's passing title – an accolade Perez has now won in back-to-back seasons. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
