Shoaib Akhtar gets legal notice from broadcaster

Islamabad, May 31 (UNI) Veteran sports broadcaster and former PTV Sports anchor Dr Nauman Niaz has served a legal notice to former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, alleging a sustained "malicious defamation campaign" over a period of three years, conducted via television channels and digital media platforms.
In a post on social media platform X, Dr Niaz stated that the campaign against him had been "one-sided" and included repeated personal attacks and "derogatory remarks contrary to reality." He specifically cited Episode 31 of Dug Out, streamed on the Tamasha app on May 25, as a recent example, where Akhtar allegedly made fresh defamatory statements.
"Eventually, the silence could no longer be mistaken for acquiescence," Dr Niaz posted. "On the advice of counsel, a line has now been drawn formally, firmly. A legal notice has been issued to Mr Shoaib Akhtar."
The notice was served on May 29, by Advocate Qazi Umair Ali on behalf of Dr Niaz. The defamation claim centres around remarks made by Akhtar in which he allegedly described Dr Niaz as a kit man who carried players' bags during his tenure with the national team, an assertion Dr Niaz has labelled as false, derogatory, and damaging to his reputation.
The legal notice demands an unconditional public apology and a formal retraction of the remarks made. The notice also sets a deadline of 14 days for compliance, failing which defamation proceedings will be initiated under Pakistan's Defamation Ordinance 2002, including a claim for Rs 1 billion in damages.
Dr Niaz has emphasised that he has held significant administrative roles within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and has contributed extensively to the field of sports journalism over the years. He contends that Akhtar's remarks are part of a broader pattern of targeted attacks intended to undermine his professional standing.
This is not the first time the two public figures have clashed. In October 2021, a widely publicised incident during a live broadcast on PTV Sports saw Dr Niaz asking Akhtar to leave the studio mid-show following an on-air disagreement. The episode sparked national debate and led to both figures being taken off-air temporarily pending an inquiry.
The developing row has reignited discussions in Pakistan's cricketing and media circles about professional decorum, accountability, and the consequences of public defamation.

Anna University rape case: Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin's response to AIADMK's 'who is that sir' question

NEW DELHI: A political slugfest erupted on Monday after the Anna University rape convict was sentenced to life imprisonment, with the opposition AIADMK intensifying its attack on the MK Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government—demanding answers about the identity of the individual referred to as 'sir' in the FIR and questioning why he was excluded from the investigation. Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, without taking any names, reacted noting that the court commended the "excellent performance of the police in this case." Opposition leader E Palanisami also accused of making "behind-the-scenes efforts" to shield Gananesekaran, the rape convict. "In this case, the Stalin-led DMK government made numerous behind-the-scenes efforts to shield the convict, DMK's Gnanasekaran," Palaniswami said in a post on X. "That's why we still ask the question: #WhoIsThatSIR—a question seeking full justice. Who is the "SIR" mentioned in the FIR? Why was he ruled out during the investigation? Why did the DMK government rush to conclude this case by pinning the blame solely on Gnanasekaran? #WhoProtectedSIR? These questions won't remain unanswered for long. Once @AIADMKOfficial returns to power, every truth will come to light. Even if Mr Stalin wishes otherwise, no "SIR" can be protected by any power," he added. Reacting to this, Stalin said, "During the trial, we have completed the Chennai student's case fairly and expeditiously in just five months, and secured a severe punishment for the culprit, much to the praise of the High Court itself. The women's court has also come forward to praise the police for their excellent performance in this case, as the verdict has been announced. This has put to shame the thoughts of some people with limited intelligence who would seek political gain even from the injustice done to a young woman. " BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan also hit out at Stalin government questioning how could the state government take credit for it. "He has been convicted. There should be no relaxation in his punishment. I want to mention two things- the legal process has been fast, but I don't know how the Stalin government can take credit for it. If they are taking credit for this, then who will take responsibility for the incident?" she said. Last year, a second-year student at Anna University was sexually assaulted on campus. Following an investigation, Chennai Police arrested Gnanasekaran in connection with the incident. A Mahila Court in Chennai awarded the convict a life sentence for a minimum period of 30 years without remission and a fine of Rs 90,000.

Bangladeshi smuggler killed at Tripura border by BSF

Agartala, June 2 (UNI) A Bangladeshi smuggler was killed on Sunday following a violent clash with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along India-Bangladesh border in the Debipur area under the Rangaouti panchayat of Kailashahar in the Unokoti district. Police said the incident occurred at the border patch between pillars 56 and 57 amid heavy rainfall. According to a report, a group of Bangladeshi smugglers launched an attack on BSF jawans stationed at the border post late on the night of 31 May. Taking advantage of poor visibility due to rain, the group allegedly pelted stones and attempted to attack the jawans with sharp weapons. Despite repeated warnings from BSF, the smugglers intensified their attack, forcing the jawans to fire in self-defence. Later during the search, BSF recovered a body, identified as Pradip Baidya (22), who was hit below the left knee and collapsed. Immediately, the rest of the group members fled back across the border. BSF jawans provided first aid and rushed the injured man to Unakoti District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The deceased was later identified to be a resident of Sharifpur of Kulaura Upazila in Bangladesh's Moulvibazar district. His elder brother, Jayanta Baidya, confirmed that Pradip had left home the previous evening and did not return. Upon hearing of a death near the border, Jayanta on Monday visited the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) camp. However, BSF said the body will be handed over to the family through BGB after a post-mortem. UNI BB ARN
