LOGICALLY speaking, this racing game is a biological sport — it's all down to breeding.
And CHARLES DARWIN (2.30) is bred to be one of the elite.
He's a son of brilliant sprinter No Nay Never and a brother to Blackbeard, who was fourth in the Coventry as a two-year-old and won the Group 1 Middle Park at three.

Charles Darwin has three runs under his belt, which is a big help coming to a stage like Royal Ascot. He won his last two starts pretty comfortably and sets the standard for this five-furlong dash.
I had the choice of SERIOUS CONTENDER (3.05), Propose and Light As Air in the King Charles Stakes. They are all nice sorts but I decided on Serious Contender who has been put away since winning at Leopardstown on his reappearance this season. He's in good shape.
Light Of Air was probably unlucky not to beat Serious Contender the last time at Leopardstown and the step up in trip will suit him.
In the Ribblesdale, I'm on GARDEN OF EDEN (3.40) who won a Listed race at Naas and is a tough filly who will be suited by the step up in trip.
She found plenty for pressure and showed a good attitude, so I'm looking forward to getting back on her. Stablemate Ecstatic is a likeable filly too. She's got lots of ability and we're yet to see the best of her.
Hopefully, ILLINOIS (4.20) can prove to be a good replacement for Kyprios in the Gold Cup.
Illinois has never gone this far but I've won it on a couple of four-year-olds who came into the race with the same profile. He won the Queen's Vase here last year, is a winner of the St Leger, won well at Longchamp on his final start last season and then made a winning return at Chester this year. He gives every impression he'll stay and likes quick ground.
Candelaria is another four-year-old who is open to improvement, while Trawlerman has been here and got the T-shirt so is a solid challenger.
It's not quite as hot as it can get in the SERENGETI (5.00) but he takes his chance in the Ascot Stakes. He made the running in the French Guineas but faded. This is a drop in class but it's hard to know his level.
TRINITY COLLEGE (5.35) comes into this meeting off the back of a very good fourth in the French Derby and has every chance of winning this on all known form.
Detain finished just ahead of him in that, so is a worthy favourite. Reyenzi is an outsider to look out for.
I'm riding ROI DE FRANCE (6.10) for John Gosden in the last. He's got to carry plenty of weight but has run well in some very hot handicaps. He is capable of making the frame.

Trawlerman races away to take Gold Cup at Royal Ascot

It was simple but ruthlessly effective as Trawlerman and William Buick made all the running to win the Gold Cup on Thursday. The Gosden stable's seven-year-old faced two four-year-old rivals with a touch more class but no experience of racing at two and a half miles and when Buick challenged them to catch him with a quarter of a mile to run, neither Illinois nor Candelari could summon a response. Candelari was a spent force with half a mile left, while Illinois's brief effort in the home straight scarcely made an impression on Trawlerman's lead as he galloped on relentlessly for the line. He had a seven-length advantage at the post and it was seven more back to Dubai Future in third. 'It was the only way we were going to win,' said John Gosden, who has won the feature event on the first three days of the meeting. 'We had to say, if you're going to beat me, you're going to know you've been in a race, because you're going to have to go two and a half miles at a proper gallop. 'William said [before the race], 'from four out, I'm going to notch it up, notch it up, notch it up.' So if they stay, they're going to have to stay every inch. He rode him perfectly and judged it beautifully. It's not an easy thing to do over two and a half miles. 'I take nothing from the second. He's a fabulous horse, but two and a half miles truly run is not his game. Falsely run, he'd be fine.' Gosden summoned up the memory of a great stayer of the past – the three-time winner Sagaro, with Lester Piggott in the saddle – to explain the appeal of a hard-galloping stayer like Trawlerman and acknowledged that his horse had been beaten by an outstanding champion in the now retired Kyprios in this race last year. 'He ran Kyprios to a length and they were both all out,' Gosden said. 'So he deserves, with Kyprios not here, to come back and show he's a proper horse over this trip. 'I remember the great horses that Lester Piggott rode, like Sagaro, the way he could run the last six furlongs in one [minute] 12 [seconds] flat. That's what I like, a horse that can go the distance, and then go, and you can't catch them.' Illinois was seen as a possible successor to Kyprios and Aidan O'Brien's mighty stayer Yeats before the race, but the search for the next Gold Cup winner from Ballydoyle now seems likely to shift to the three-year-old crop. Trawlerman, meanwhile, is a gelding, and while he has left it quite late to attempt to join the list of multiple Gold Cup winners, Gosden will give him every chance. 'He should be aimed at coming back here next year,' the trainer said, 'and he shouldn't be over-raced in the meantime. Don't be surprised if you don't see him again until the Henry II [Stakes in May] next year. 'He doesn't need to be going to all those [summer Cup] races or he might come back here for that race in the autumn [the stayers' event on Champions Day in October], he's won that [before], and then we'll put him away.' This was a fifth win of the meeting for the John & Thady Gosden team, but not enough to keep them in the lead in the race to be the leading trainer as O'Brien, the winner in eight of the past 10 seasons, completed a 44-1 treble. Charles Darwin (8-13) was an impressive winner of the opening Norfolk Stakes, while Garden Of Eden (7-1) took the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes and Trinity College, the 5-2 favourite, made all the running in the Group Three Hampton Court Stakes. The treble sent Ryan Moore well clear of his rivals for the top jockeys' prize with five winners. He is two clear of Oisin Murphy – who had a 42-1 double on Arabian Story in the Britannia Handicap and Never So Brave in the concluding Buckingham Palace Stakes – and three ahead of a trio of riders – including Buick and James Doyle – with two wins. Zarigana, who got the Poule D'Essai Des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas) in the stewards' room, is the only runner in Friday's Coronation Stakes with a previous Group One victory to her name but still faces significant opposition as she pursues a second after two unbeaten fillies – Falakeyah and Kon Tiki – were given £46k supplementary entries at the weekend. Falakeyah in particular has captured the punters' imagination, and Owen Burrows's filly has since replaced Zarigana at the top of the betting with most firms. She is back in trip after running away with the Pretty Polly at Newmarket – often seen as a trial for the 12-furlong Oaks – but showed plenty of speed in the early part of the race and should cope with the drop to a mile. Zarigana could easily be unbeaten in five as her sole defeat was in a head-bobber for the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp in October. This is far from a two-horse race, however, and the 7-1 shot Kon Tiki (4.20), who has very similar claims to Falakeyah on her form, accelerated impressively to win a Listed race at York's Dante meeting in May. On paper, this is a significant step up in class but that was a strong field for the level and she won in an excellent time, with more in hand than a half-length margin might suggest. Royal Ascot 2.30 Gold Digger showed an excellent turn of foot to justify market support on debut at Yarmouth in May and could be over-priced at around 8-1 to follow up in what looks an open renewal of the Albany Stakes. Royal Ascot 3.05 Two of 2024's Group One-winning juveniles are in the lineup for this year's Commonwealth Cup and Shadow Of Light, who was Europe's top-rated two-year-old thanks to a rare double in the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes, will be tough to beat dropping back to the Middle Park's six-furlong trip. He showed excellent speed to quicken into the lead in the 2,000 Guineas in May before fading late on behind Ruling Court and Tuesday's St James's Park Stakes winner, Field Of Gold, and this return to a stiff sprint trip promises to play to his strengths. Royal Ascot 3.40 Roger Varian's French Duke has yet to run this season but is the type to make significant further progress as a four-year-old having been gelded over the winter. James Doyle's presence in the saddle is encouraging as the Wathnan operation has the fancied recent purchase Almosh'her in the field. Royal Ascot 5.00 Silver Ghost beat the re-opposing Miss Nightfall by two-and-a-half lengths in a strongly run handicap at Goodwood last month and while James Fanshawe's filly has a 6lb swing in her favour here, Silver Ghost has improved from race-to-race this year and looks the better bet at around 12-1. He was still showing signs of inexperience there and further improvement seems inevitable here if the race does not come too soon. Royal Ascot 6.10 The high-numbered stalls have held sway on the straight course this week and also in this race since it was added to the schedule in 2020. This is a negative for two of the market leaders, Realign and Redorange. Simon and Ed Crisford's Adrestia, though, has drawn well in stall 24, has Oisin Murphy booked to ride and has presumably been pleasing her trainers since a close third at Windsor on her seasonal debut 11 days ago.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch under investigation by CONCACAF

June 19 - The Canadian Soccer Association and head coach Jesse Marsch are under investigation by CONCACAF over claims of rules violations and the use of offensive language during Canada's 6-0 Gold Cup win over Honduras on Tuesday. Marsch wasn't even on the sidelines for the game since he was serving a two-game suspension for receiving a red card in Canada's third-place game of the Nations League finals against the United States in March. "The Disciplinary Committee will review all available evidence, including official reports detailing that the CSA and its head coach disregarded regulations applicable to suspended match officials and used offensive language toward CONCACAF match officials," CONCACAF said it a statement Thursday. Marsch claimed in March that Canada has long been treated with "disrespect" by CONCACAF match officials. Marsch, 51, is a native of Wisconsin, who played more than 300 games in MLS with D.C. United, the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA. He was a head coach with the Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls before heading to Europe, where he has coached at Red Bull Salzburg (Austria), RB Leipzig (Germany) and Leeds United (England). --Field Level Media

Royal Ascot day four: Tips, results and racecard for tomorrow's racing

The penultimate day of Royal Ascot is upon us and if you have not found a winner yet now is a good a time as any. Tomorrow's card is all about two cracking Group 1s. The Coronation Stakes (4.20), run over a mile, features a hot favourite in Falakeyah who could yet prove to be the best three-year-old filly in training. The Commonwealth Cup (3.05) offers a prize fund of over £725,000, with the best three-year-old sprinters locking horns over six furlongs. Below, our experts give their selections for every race on the card and their best bet (Nap) on Thursday. Check back here once the racing kicks off for results. Royal Ascot day four tips 2.30pm: Albany Stakes (Group Three) Charlie Brooks – This isn't the moment to oppose the two-year-olds that O'Brien has chosen to bring over. Signora is the pick. (Nap) Marcus Armytage – Signora was third to a very smart filly on debut and bound to come on for that Marlborough – Signora has a similar profile to her stable's other juvenile winners this week and looks a surefire improver here 3.05pm: Commonwealth Cup (Group One) Charlie Brooks – Babouche. It's a choice between the 1000 Guineas form from Newmarket and the Curragh and Colin Keane is presumably on the right Juddmonte horse Marcus Armytage – Fast American filly, Shisospicy, has won over five and a half. Slight question mark over six but possibly quickest in field Marlborough – Rayevka travelled so strongly in her latest victory in France and she is good enough to threaten the market principles at good odds 3.40pm: Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap) Charlie Brooks – French Duke will have been trained all year for this and James Doyle has picked this rather than Wathnan Racing's other runner Marcus Armytage – Hand of God won last year's Golden Gates. Forget his comeback run, today's the day Marlborough – Signs are that Almosh'her is better than a handicapper and has been bought by Wathnan Racing recently. His wide draw is a plus over this distance 4.20pm: Coronation Stakes (Group One) Charlie Brooks – January was never going to be O'Brien's first string for the Irish 1000 Guineas. Could have come on a lot for that run and Ryan Moore's choice Marcus Armytage – Chantilly Lace was two and half lengths off Desert Flower in Guineas on seasonal debut Marlborough – Dropping Falakeyah to a mile could be a shrewd move and she looks a Group 1 winner in waiting 5pm: Sandringham Stakes (Handicap) Charlie Brooks – Saariselka. Ed Walker's horses are running really consistently and this filly looks rock solid Marcus Armytage – Oolong Poobong took apart Haydock handicap last time and is on the improve Marlborough – Dash Of Azure showed promise last year in some good races and won cosily on return. She is well handicapped for Ralph Beckett. 5.35pm: King Edward VII Stakes (Group Two) Charlie Brooks – Step up to mile and a half should suit Amiloc and trainer has held back from some bigger fights to wait for this Marcus Armytage – Amiloc is unbeaten and was a wide-margin winner of last two starts. If not a gelding might have gone for Derby Marlborough – Puppet Master was one of his stable's Derby trial winners and they look to have a good hand in this division 6.10pm: Palace of Holyroodhouse (Handicap) Charlie Brooks – Realign is very lightly raced and has bags of improvement left to come Marcus Armytage – Stormy Impact won the Epsom Dash and comes here in good form Marlborough – Realign has always been well regarded and looks well handicapped off 93 with the drop to this stiff five furlongs looking like a good next step Royal Ascot results Thursday, June 18 2.30pm: Norfolk Stakes Charles Darwin 8/13F Wise Approach 10/1 Sandal's Song 9/1 3.05pm: King George V Stakes Merchant 3/1F Serious Contender 7/1 Pantile Warrior 40/1 Nautical Force 25/1 3.40pm: Ribblesdale Stakes Garden Of Eden 7/1 Understudy 40/1 Catalina Delcarpio 2/1F 4.20pm: Ascot Gold Cup Trawlerman 85/40F Illinois 9/4 Dubai Future 28/1 5pm: Britannia Stakes Arabain Story 15/2 La Botte 7/1 Fearnot 12/1 Dividend 50/1 5.35pm: Hampton Court Stakes Trinity College 5/2F Tornado Alert 9/1 Glittering Legend 11/1 6.10pm: Buckingham Palace Stakes Wednesday, June 18 2.30: Queen Mary Stakes True Love 9/4F Flowerhead 100/1 Lennilu 11/2 Cardiff By The Sea 11/1 Staya 16/1 3.05pm: Queen's Vase Carmers 9/2 Furthur 20/1 Rahiebb 9/1 3.40pm: Duke of Cambridge Stakes Crimson Advocate 13/2 Cinderella's Dream 5/4F Fallen Angel 6/1 4.20pm: Prince of Wales's Stakes Ombudsman 7/1 Anmaat 5/1 See The Fire 7/2 5pm: Royal Hunt Cup My Cloud 3/1F Bullet Point 11/1 Bopedro 50/1 Greek Order 22/1 5.35pm: Kensington Palace Stakes Miss Information 11/1 Snellen 25/1 Chesire Dancer 20/1 Muddy Mooy 33/1 6.10pm: Windsor Castle Stakes Havana Hurricane 7/1 Dickensian 20/1 Azizam 7/1 Rogue Legend 4/1 Tuesday, June 17 2.30pm: Queen Anne Stakes Docklands 14/1 Rosallion 5/2F Cairo 100/1 Notable Speech 4/1 3.05pm: Coventry Stakes Gstaad 7/2F Do Or Do Not 80/1 Coppull 66/1 Andab 5/1 3.40pm: King Charles III Stakes American Affair 11/1 Frost at Dawn 28/1 Regional 9/1 Starlust 9/1 4.20pm: St James's Palace Stakes Field of Gold 8/11F Henri Matisse 4/1 Ruling Court 4/1 5pm: Ascot Stakes Ascending 20/1 Nurburing 16/1 Comfort Zone 33/1 Leinster 25/1 Divine Comedy 28/1 5.35pm: Wolferton Stakes Haatem 8/1 Galen 13/2 King's Gambit 4/1F Enfjaar 5/1 6.10pm: Copper Horse Stakes French Master 5/2F Caballo De Mar 13/2 Samui 20/1 Barnso 14/1 Aeronautic 7/1 Royal Ascot Saturday racecard 2.30pm: Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f, two-year-olds, £110,000) 3.05pm: Hardwicke Stakes (Group Two, 1m4f, four-year-olds and older, £250,000) 3.40pm: Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Group One, 6f, four-year-olds and older, £1,000,000) 4.20pm: Jersey Stakes (Group Three, 7f, three-year-olds, £150,000) 5pm: Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap Class Two, 6f, three-year-olds and older, £175,000) 5.35pm: Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap Class Two, 1m2f, three-year-olds, £110,000) 6.10pm: Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions Class Two, 2m6f, four-year-olds and older £110,000)
