Man Utd transfer windfall in major jeopardy as Real Madrid stance emerges
Manchester United could miss out on a major windfall for ex-player Alvaro Carreras, with Real Madrid reportedly struggling to agree a deal for the Benfica star. Carreras joined United as a teenager in 2020 but moved to the Portuguese side last year.
And after a stellar year in the Primeira Liga, Carreras is now generating huge interest from Europe's elite and United were hoping to profit from a transfer.
When United sold the left-back to Benfica last summer for around £5m, club officials are said to have negotiated a sell-on clause of between 40 and 50 percent.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the United hierarchy could have been looking at a £20m windfall after reports Madrid were considering paying his £42m release clause.
United desperately need extra cash this summer amid their perilous financial situation. Ratcliffe previously revealed the club was on course to run out of money by Christmas and been undertaking a ruthless cost-cutting regime.
Ticket prices have already been increased, with concessions slashed and free lunches in the canteen axed - and a number of exit are expected this summer as United look to get expensive players off the wage bill.
But a boost of cash injection from the Carreras deal now looks unlikely after Marca claimed Real Madrid are willing to risk losing out on him because they don't believe he's worth his release clause.
Benfica are reportedly refusing to budge on their £42m price for the 22-year-old but Madrid have told them they are prepared to walk away from the deal - despite previous claim that Xabi Alonso's men had already agreed a deal.
The report adds that Benfica want as much money as possible because they know United are due for a big chunk of the transfer fee.
Madrid are eager to sign a new left-back for Alonso, with Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia their only recognised options in the position. Instead Alonso could move for his ex-Leverkusen star Alex Grimaldo.
Carreras started 30 games for Benfica in the Portuguese top flight, scoring four and assisting three in all competitions.
Any money United can receive for his signature will massively help them bolster their own squad. Ruben Amorim's side have already signed Wolves star Matheus Cunha while a deal for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo appears to be close.

Arsenal handed £6m transfer boost as forgotten man completes exit
Nuno Tavares has spent the last three seasons out on loan after falling out of Mikel Arteta's plans in North London and has now signed a permanent deal with Italian side Lazio Arsenal's forgotten man, Nuno Tavares, has completed a permanent move to Italian side Lazio. The Portuguese international, who spent last term on loan with the Serie A side, moves in a £6million deal. He has signed a three-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico. The 25-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer of 2021 from Benfica in an £8million move, making 28 appearances in all competitions. But he never looked an ideal fit at left-back for Mikel Arteta's side, combining occasional thrilling attacking forays with somewhat haphazard defending. As new arrivals in that role followed, Tavares was cast aside, heading on loan to Monaco, then Nottingham Forest and most latterly Lazio. In the Italian capital he has impressed, operating as a wing-back and thrusting his way into the Portugal national team, winning his first senior international cap when he came on as a substitute in Portugal's 5-1 win against Poland in the UEFA Nations League last November. An Arsenal statement said: "Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Nuno for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future." Tavares will be joined at Lazio this season by the returning former Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri - who has rejoined the club 15 months after leaving. Sarri, 66, is back at the helm, replacing Marco Baroni, who led Lazio to a seventh-place finish last term - missing out on European qualification. Sarri resigned in March 2024 after five defeats in six games and voicing his displeasure at the club's transfer policy, following three years in charge - during which time he led them to a second place finish, their best since winning the title in 2000. Lazio president Claudio Lotito said in a statement earlier this week: "Maurizio Sarri has returned home. "His return is a choice of heart, conviction and vision. With him we want to resume a path that was interrupted too soon, aware that together, we can bring back enthusiasm, identity and ambition. "Welcome back to your home, commander."

Gers finally ended their 102-day search for Philippe Clement's replacement by handing the Ibrox reins to ex-Southampton boss Martin. The former Scotland international has been tasked with leading the Light Blues' revival and bridging the gap with their rivals across the city. Martin – who has also managed MK Dons and Swansea – led Saints to Premier League promotion in 2024 but was axed in December after just one win from 16 top-flight matches. The 39-year-old's mixed managerial record has heightened concerns among supporters as to whether he's the right man for the job. Trophy-starved Rangers ended another dismal campaign 17 points behind runaway champions Celtic but Boyd is adamant Martin has the right credentials to transform the Glasgow giants into title challengers. "Listen, it didn't make good reading for Rangers domestically last year once again", the legendary striker told Sky Sports News. "But we've seen it before. You go back to Dick Advocat's team, they totally wiped the floor with Celtic. Martin O'Neill arrived and they totally wiped the floor with that Rangers team, which was a good Rangers team. "I think that you look at Rangers' problems, they didn't come against Celtic last year, they were against everyone else. "So if Rangers can eradicate the results against everybody else and start to build momentum early, start winning the games against the rest, then the Old Firm games will take care of themselves. "And Rangers have shown that they can cause Celtic problems in one-off games. But it's finding that consistency, and that's going to be the challenge for Russell Martin from now on. "He needs to find a level of consistency to go and beat the rest that allows Rangers to challenge towards the latter stage of the season against Celtic. "I've seen bigger point gaps than this being turned around. It's not like in England where you might have one big team who's struggling, but there are another three or four who are doing okay, and you need to overtake the three or four. "For Rangers, they only need to overtake Celtic for it to be a success. But, it's going to be a lot harder than you think because Celtic, under Brendan Rodgers, have been a well-oiled machine now for a number of seasons. "They do look as if they will strengthen again in the summer. They've got an opportunity for Champions League football again. "I think that it's a tough ask, but I think Rangers have got the right man, and he's shown that he can improve players, he can improve teams, he can build a culture within the football club that will allow the club to flourish going forward. "So, for me, can that gap be closed? Of course it can. Rangers need to find that consistency against everyone else. "But also, we've all been part of squads where you know you're going to be playing, you know you're the first name on the team sheet, and that's not good. It's not healthy. "You need to have people pushing you every single day in training, and I'm sure if Russell Martin's to add six or seven players to that, the starters from last year will probably become substitutes, and then it's up to them to fight back to try and get on the team. "And that is a healthy squad." Rangers appoint new boss Russell Martin on three-year contract
The 39-year-old former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton boss has signed a three-year contract. Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of former captain Barry Ferguson, having dismissed Philippe Clement in February. Ex-Scotland defender Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, is tasked with wrestling power back from the other side of Glasgow after Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish football continued with a 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday, while new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday. Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart, who led the recruitment process alongside Thelwell, said: 'Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. Russell was the standout candidate.'
