Social media reacts to Ian Schieffelin officially joining the Clemson football team
After four standout seasons with Clemson basketball, Ian Schieffelin is officially joining the Clemson football team as a tight end. He made the announcement Friday with a photoshopped image of himself wearing a split basketball-football jersey in front of Memorial Stadium, captioned simply: 'NEXT CHAPTER.'
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Schieffelin had been training for a pro basketball career when a conversation with Dabo Swinney changed everything.

'Dabo just walked me through the opportunity he was willing to give me, and it all sounded great,' he told ESPN. 'Being able to put on a Clemson jersey again was very enticing… and to do it this time in Death Valley is going to be amazing.'
Schieffelin is now officially listed on Clemson's football roster and will play tight end under Swinney and position coach Kyle Richardson. It's a move that's been brewing for months — Dabo said back in October that Schieffelin could "play whatever he wants to play.'
In his final season on the court, Schieffelin averaged 12.4 points and 9.4 rebounds, starting all 34 games for a Clemson team that won a program-record 27 games before falling to McNeese State in the NCAA Tournament.
Now, he's taking his final year of eligibility to the football field.

'Maybe I'll be really good, maybe I'll be really bad,' he said with a laugh. 'But it was something worth a shot.'
Clemson opens the 2025 football season at home vs. LSU on August 30 — and fans might just see No. 4 from the basketball team suiting up in pads this time.

Clemson is one of the biggest college football hype trains rolling into 2025, expert says The Clemson Tigers understandably have a lot of hype heading into the 2025 college football season. After the year quarterback Cade Klubnik had in 2024 (3,639 passing yards, 36 TDs), and a host of other talent returning on both sides of the ball in defensive linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods and receivers Antonio Williams, Bryant Wesco and TJ Moore, Clemson is as high as No. 2 in various post-spring top 25 rankings (USA TODAY Sports, ESPN). With 83 days remaining until the Tigers open the season against LSU at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30, CBS Sports has Clemson on its list of the 12 biggest "hype trains" with the most offseason buzz rolling into 2025. Analyst Carter Bahns said of the Tigers: "Dabo Swinney is nearly seven years removed from his second national championship, but after a long stretch that saw his Clemson program slip from its pedestal, he has a behemoth of a 2025 roster that could get back to the mountaintop. Cade Klubnik might be college football's top quarterback after he improved throughout last season, and his stacked receiving corps will only help him reach the next level as a Heisman contender. Expected improvements on defense with Tom Allen taking over the unit will make the Tigers as well-rounded as anyone." Swinney brought in Allen to run the defense after heading up a Penn State unit that went 11-1 in the regular season and reached the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff in 2024. Allen will be tasked to improve a Clemson defense that, under Wes Goodwin, gave up an average of 374 yards per game (69th nationally). The Tigers went 10-4 last year and defeated SMU, 34-31, in a thrilling ACC Championship Game on a walk-off 56-yard Nolan Hauser field goal as time expired. They made the College Football Playoff for the first time in four years and were ranked No. 11 in the final US LBM Coaches Poll. Clemson's season opener against LSU will be in prime time at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC. In ESPN's recent Football Power Index (FPI) rankings, however, Mizzou made the cut. Advertisement The FPI estimates each FBS team's strengths on all three sides of the ball, and it takes into account all roster movements during the offseason. Those strength projections are then run through a simulation of the team's upcoming schedule 20,000 times to calculate average projections for their success throughout the season. Missouri ranks No. 23 for projected strength, and they've been given a projected win-loss total of 6.9-5.2. As has been the trend in recent seasons, the defense has continued to turn heads. The Tigers' defense is ranked No. 17 in the country with an FPI score of 6.2. Mizzou is also projected to compete in one of the "most anticipated" games of the season, based on ESPN's game quality analytics that gauge both team's FPI scores. Advertisement In Week 7, the Tigers will host Alabama, ranking No. 23 out of the top 25 matchups of the season. The game earned an 89.2 rating, and it'll mark the first time since 2020 that Mizzou has hosted the Crimson Tide. Of the 16 schools in the Southeastern Conference, 13 of them ranked within ESPN's top 25 with Texas, Georgia and Alabama taking No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The simulations projected an average of 4.6 teams from the SEC will make the College Football Playoff, and Missouri made the Playoff in 9.2 percent of the simulations.
