Malaysia's labour market continued to show steady improvement in April 2025, with employment rising and unemployment falling to its lowest level in ten years, according to the latest data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
The number of employed persons rose by 0.2% month-on-month, adding 40,100 jobs to bring the total to 16.82 million. The employment-to-population ratio remained stable at 68.6%, reflecting sustained economic capacity to generate jobs.
According to the DOSM report, services led the increase, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation and food services, and transportation and storage. Manufacturing, Construction, Agriculture, and Mining & Quarrying also posted job gains.
The employee category, which makes up the bulk of the workforce at 75.1%, rose to 12.63 million, while the number of own-account workers—typically self-employed individuals—increased by 0.6% to 3.16 million.
Malaysia's unemployment rate dropped to 3.0% in April, the lowest since April 2015, marking a 0.1 percentage point decrease from March. The number of unemployed persons declined by 3,700 to 525,900, further cementing a positive trend in the job market.

Meanwhile, the number of individuals outside the labour force rose slightly by 11,300 to 7.17 million. The main reasons cited were housework or family responsibilities (43.7%) and schooling or training (41.1%
April's labour data highlights growing confidence in the Malaysian economy, with strong job creation across multiple sectors and a record-low jobless rate. As domestic demand recovers and key industries expand, employment is expected to continue trending upward in the coming months. Related

Malaysia's natural rubber production tumbles 37.3 pct in April

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's natural rubber production decreased by 37.3 percent to 18,008 tons in April as compared to 28,739 tons in March, official data showed Thursday. Year-on-year comparison showed that the production of natural rubber fell by 15.6 percent from 21,325 tons a year ago, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement. Meanwhile, total stocks of natural rubber in April declined by 6.7 percent to 203,728 tons as compared to 218,253 tons in March. Exports of Malaysia's natural rubber amounted to 35,901 tons in April, decreased 31.7 percent as against 52,531 tons in March. The export performance was contributed by natural rubber-based products such as gloves, tires, tube and rubber thread. Gloves were the main exports of rubber-based products with a value of 1.1 billion ringgit (260,000 million U.S. dollars) in April, a decrease of 19.2 percent as compared to 1.3 billion ringgit in March. Cited the Malaysia Rubber Board Digest published in April, DOSM said the Kuala Lumpur Rubber Market experienced mixed trends of declines and recovery throughout April, influenced by fluctuating signals from regional rubber futures markets in response to the uncertainties of the U.S. trade policies. "Market sentiment remained subdued amid ongoing global economic uncertainties and escalating global trade tensions. Additionally, a stronger ringgit against the U.S. dollar and declining crude oil prices further weighed on sentiment," it said. (1 ringgit equals 0.24 U.S. dollar)

PETALING JAYA: Star Media Group (SMG) has been awarded silver for 'Best Digital Publisher of the Year' at the MDA D-Awards 2025, recognising the Group's role in using journalism to accelerate ESG awareness and action through StarESG, its dedicated editorial platform for environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Organised by the Malaysian Digital Association (MDA), the D-Awards has been a pivotal platform to recognise and honour talents, agencies, brands, publishers, and digital service providers that adopt and lead in the use of digital technologies. This award recognition reflects SMG's role as a catalyst in Malaysia's ESG journey—translating complex sustainability issues into accessible, impactful narratives that shape public understanding and support more informed, responsible decisions. SMG's chief operating officer Lydia Wang said journalism continues to play an important role in informing and supporting progress on key national priorities. Its learning arm, StarESG Academy, has trained more than 1,350 professionals, supporting the corporate sector in building ESG literacy and readiness. In 2024, SMG hosted the inaugural ESG Positive Impact Awards, honouring Malaysian companies for their leadership in sustainability. Widely regarded as a credible benchmark for ESG excellence, the awards reflect a rigorous evaluation process and strong industry recognition. That same year, SMG also founded the Asia ESG Positive Impact Consortium (A-EPIC)—a first-of-its-kind regional media alliance with Indonesia's KG Media and the Philippines' Inquirer Group, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to promote Asean-wide ESG collaboration and accountability. By embedding purpose into reporting and building an integrated ESG ecosystem, SMG is redefining the role of legacy media - not merely as an observer of change, but as a catalyst for impact.

Malaysia's Natural Rubber Production Drops Sharply In April, Amid Weak Global Demand

Malaysia's natural rubber industry saw a significant decline in April 2025, with production plunging by 37.3% to 18,008 tonnes, compared to 28,739 tonnes in March, according to the latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). On a year-on-year basis, production was also down by 15.6%, with April 2024 recording 21,325 tonnes. DOSM noted that the smallholders sector remained the main contributor, accounting for 86% of national output, while estates contributed the remaining 14%. Total NR stockpiles in April also shrank, falling 6.7% to 203,728 tonnes, down from 218,253 tonnes in March. The majority of the stock was held by rubber processors (87.6%), followed by rubber consumers (12.3%) and rubber estates (0.1%). Meanwhile, exports of NR fell 31.7% to 35,901 tonnes in April, compared to 52,531 tonnes in March. Despite the decline, P.R. China remained the top export destination, accounting for 33.3% of Malaysia's rubber exports, followed by the United Arab Emirates (14.9%), Germany (14.2%), India (6.5%), and the United States (5.1%). Exports of rubber-based products, including gloves, tyres, tubes, and rubber thread, also declined. Gloves, the top contributor, generated RM1.1 billion in export value in April—down 19.2% from RM1.3 billion in March. The average price of key NR products weakened in April: Concentrated Latex fell by 7.0% to 647.20 sen/kg Scrap rubber dropped by 15.8% to 641.27 sen/kg Prices for all Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R) grades also declined between 6.9% and 13.5%, reflecting softening global demand and market uncertainties. The steep drop in production, exports, and prices signals growing pressure on Malaysia's rubber sector, which faces both seasonal challenges and weakening global demand. Market analysts suggest that demand recovery in major export markets and price stabilisation will be key factors to watch in the coming months. Related
