Nintendo aims to match Switch success with new console

TOKYO : Nintendo hopes to match the runaway success of the Switch when its levelled-up new console hits shelves Thursday, with strong early sales expected despite the gadget's high price.
Featuring a bigger screen and more processing power, the Switch 2 is an upgrade to its predecessor, which has sold 152 million units since launching in 2017 – making it the third best-selling video game console of all time.
But despite buzz among fans and robust demand for pre-orders, headwinds for Nintendo include uncertainty over US trade tariffs and whether enough people are willing to shell out.
The Switch 2 'is priced relatively high' compared to the original device, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said at a financial results briefing in May.
'So even if there is momentum around the launch, we know it will not be easy to keep that momentum going over the long term,' he warned.
Sales of the Switch, which can connect to a TV or be played on the go, were boosted by the popularity of games like 'Animal Crossing' as a pandemic lockdown pastime.
The Japanese company forecasts it will shift 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the current financial year, roughly equal to the original in the same period after its release.
The new device costs US$449.99 in the US, over a third more than the Switch. A Japan-only version is cheaper, at ¥49,980 (US$350). New Switch 2 games such as 'Donkey Kong Bonanza' and 'Mario Kart World' – which allows players to go exploring off-grid – are also more expensive than existing Switch titles.
Most original Switch games can be played on the Switch 2, and some Switch blockbusters such as 'Zelda: Breath of the Wild' will have enhanced editions released for the new incarnation.
'People were a bit shocked by the price of 'Mario Kart World', the first US$80 game that we've ever seen,' said Krysta Yang of the Nintendo-focused Kit & Krysta Podcast.
While the company is 'going to have to do some work' to convince more casual gamers that it's worth upgrading, Nintendo fans are 'super excited', she told AFP.
The Switch 2 will have eight times the memory of the first Switch, and its controllers, which attach with magnets, can also be used like a desktop computer mouse.
Although the new console is not radically different, 'a lot of people (are) saying, 'this is what I wanted, I wanted a more powerful Switch – don't mess with a good thing',' said Yang, a former Nintendo employee.
New functions allowing users to chat as they play online and temporarily share games with friends could also be a big draw, said David Gibson of MST Financial.
'It's a way to appeal to an audience which has got used much more to the idea of streaming games and watching games, as well as playing games,' he told AFP, predicting that the Switch 2 will break records in terms of early sales.
And success is crucial for Nintendo.
While the 'Super Mario' maker is diversifying into theme parks and hit movies, around 90% of its revenue still comes from the Switch business, analysts say.
Nintendo delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the US by two weeks as it assessed the impact from president Donald Trump's global assault on free trade.
But its pre-orders have since sold out in the US market and elsewhere, with the company boasting of particularly high demand in Japan.
Furukawa said in May that Nintendo's financial projections are based on the assumption of US tariffs of 10% on products produced in Japan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and 145% on China.
'Hardware for North America is mainly produced in Vietnam,' he added.
Trump's hefty so-called 'reciprocal' tariff of 46% on goods from Vietnam is on pause, while those on China have been slashed.
Tariff uncertainty could in fact push consumers to buy a Switch 2 sooner, because they are worried that the price could go up, Yang said.
Charlotte Massicault, director of multimedia and gaming at the French retail giant Fnac Darty, told AFP that pre-sale demand has been 'well above what we imagined'.
'For us, this will be a record in terms of first-day sales for a games console,' she said.
The Switch 2 is 'less of a family-focused product, and more of a 'gamer' product' compared to the Switch, she said.
'That's what Nintendo wanted, and it works.'

PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed that the misappropriation of sukuk funds for a Klang Valley highway project involved professionals and multiple companies to obscure the flow of funds. MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the professionals involved included auditors, financial experts, as well as engineers, Utusan Malaysia reported. He also said the corporate figure with a 'Tan Sri' title involved has yet to be questioned as he is still warded at a private hospital. 'Today, investigators obtained a medical assessment from the attending doctor to verify the Tan Sri's condition before we can proceed to record his statement. 'In the meantime, 45 individuals who previously gave statements have been called back to provide further information,' he said. Azam added that the investigation team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri in London and Switzerland. He said investigations now focus on the actual value of luxury alcoholic beverages in the Tan Sri's possession, amid suspicions that some of the misappropriated funds may have been transferred to other accounts. 'At the same time, a notice for asset declaration has been issued to the Tan Sri and other relevant parties,' he added. To date, the seized assets include 14 individual bank accounts totalling RM4.5 million, eight company accounts totalling RM33 million, a luxury condominium and a plot of land valued at RM24.5 million, as well as nine vehicles worth RM7.65 million. Azam said 13 more vehicles have yet to be handed over to investigators. Also seized were luxury watches worth around RM25 million, designer handbags valued at RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds worth RM6 million, and four horses valued at RM400,000. 'RM3 million worth of alcoholic beverages, overseas assets valued at over RM15 million, and gambling activities estimated at around RM20 million are also under investigation. 'Investigations are also focussing on RM12 million in bribes allegedly paid to certain parties to facilitate the movement of funds out and back into the suspect's possession,' he said. Previously, Azam said that the anti-graft agency was investigating three cases of alleged bribery and false claims connected to the Maju Expressway Extension (MEX II). He said the first investigation paper involves false claims amounting to RM361 million which came from sukuk funds, while the second case concerns false disclosures involving RM416 million in sukuk funds and RM50 million in bank loans. The third case involves certain parties who allegedly solicited and received around RM12 million in bribes.

(Japen pic) PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah information chief Joniston Bangkuai today hit back at state Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin for saying it was tough to work with GRS due to its past betrayal. Joniston, who is also the Parti Bersatu Sabah information chief, said Bung was the last person who should be talking about loyalty or sincerity. 'It was Bung who conspired with Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat in January 2023 to topple the (state) government led by chief minister Hajiji Noor. 'Bung wasn't betrayed, he was the one betraying (others). 'Even while sitting in the state Cabinet, he had no respect for his colleagues in the state government led by Hajiji,' he said in a statement. He said during the political crisis, several Umno assemblymen refused to support Bung's move and instead backed Hajiji, as did Pakatan Harapan. 'If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. 'Why did your colleagues abandon your 'Kinabalu Move'? 'Why did PH support Hajiji instead of you? The answer is obvious: you didn't have their trust,' he said. Joniston said GRS had never been reliant on Umno and reiterated that the coalition was fully prepared to face the upcoming state election independently. Earlier today, Bung said Sabah Umno would not work with GRS in the upcoming state election and that it would only consider working with the party after the state polls. Citing his party's 'dark and bitter' past with GRS, Bung said they needed to practise caution in working with the coalition again. PH and Barisan Nasional have already announced an alliance for the Sabah polls, which must be held by the end of the year. This prompted GRS to threaten to go solo. GRS and PH are currently allies in Hajiji's state government while BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly. However, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim had expressed confidence that PH, BN and GRS would be able to agree on an alliance for the state election. Last week, the prime minister said discussions among the three coalitions were ongoing. Despite the negotiations, several Sabah BN and GRS leaders have traded barbs over the past few weeks, including Bung and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku president Jeffrey Kitingan.

Fugitive capybara caught by Chinese zoo after 2 months on the run

(EPA Images pic) SHANGHAI : Officials have captured the last member of a runaway capybara gang that escaped from a zoo in eastern China two months ago, a statement said today. The missing male rodent, named 'Doubao' – 'Bean Bun' in Chinese – absconded from an enclosure at the Yangzhou Zhuyuwan Scenic Area along with two other capybaras in early April. Doubao remained at large for weeks after his companions were caught by zoo officials. 'The runaway child has returned home!' the zoo wrote in a social media post. The capybara – a rodent the size of a six-year-old child – walked into a humane trap early this morning and was returned to his enclosure by zoo staff. Despite spending two months on the run, Doubao gained weight and his fur was still 'smooth and glossy', the zoo said. 'It looks like he was doing well out there!' it added. Capybaras are native to South America but in recent years have become popular attractions at zoos worldwide, with the semi-aquatic rodents becoming unlikely darlings of the internet. The zoo said the trio made their April breakout when another capybara Bazong – 'Big Shot' – broke through a fence. Bazong was later found relaxing in a lake. It took seven or eight zoo staff to trap the second accomplice, Duoduo or 'Hide Hide', in a rubbish bin. But Doubao eluded capture, with the zoo in May issuing a mock wanted poster accusing him of engaging in a mass jailbreak. Officials at one point offered a reward of frozen fried rice, a carton of eggs, capybara-themed merchandise and lifetime entry to the zoo to anyone with information about his whereabouts. A zoo representative also repeatedly pleaded for Doubao's return on live streamed videos, today's statement said.
