RANCHI: Over three decades after dropping out of school due to poverty, a 56-year-old resident of Kalamati has become the poster boy after he cleared the Class X board exams conducted by the
Jharkhand Academic Council
(JAC), results of which were declared on Tuesday.
Ganga Oraon secured second division by scoring 236 out of 500 marks (47.2%) in Class X exams in his first attempt. Speaking to TOI, Oraon said, "I had to drop out after Class IX in 1983-84 as we didn't have money after my father's death. I also to take care of my brother and two sisters. Age just passed by with responsibilities."
Last year, Oraon secured admission in a govt school in Chalangi. "Today, I have suddenly become a hero, receiving several congratulatory messages from people at my office and family members.
It feels good to be a matriculate finally," he beamed.
Oraon's brother is the lone graduate in their family. Out of his four daughters, two have cleared Class XII. His wife is illiterate.
Oraon joined the Jharkhand Samagra Sikha cell of the district education department as a peon against a casual position in 2009. Govt norms mandate the candidate should be a Class X passout as an eligibility criteria for a regularised post.

"Whenever I requested my bosses to consider my case, they would ask for my matric certificate. Hence, I finally decided to study," he said, adding that he was planning to pursue intermediate to better his chances of bagging a 'regularised govt job' to secure his old age in the form of retirement benefits.
Did he attend regular classes? "I tried as much as I could given the nature of work load at education dept. The principal of the school would often help me by conducting extra classes," he reminisced.
Hailing his efforts, Khunti district superintendent of education (DSE) Abhay Kumar Seal said, "We all are happy with his success and it is a reminder that age is just a number for any constructive work. His case will help us inspire other children who opts out of school and in our endeavours to reduce drop outs in Khunti."

UP Board to run CBSE affiliated model schools in state
Prayagraj: Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Government Model Schools, run by the secondary education department in English medium in all the 18 divisional headquarters districts of the state, will now be run by the UP Board. The Directorate of Education sent a proposal to the state govt to run these schools under the UP Board instead of CBSE. The reason behind this is that the secondary dducation department is unable to deploy teachers in model schools according to CBSE standards. Due to this, there is a problem of answering CBSE queries from time to time. Secondly, CBSE takes Rs 25,000 as a renewal fee from schools every five years. Being a govt school, the department does not have any budget for renewal fees. Sources inform that the UP Board has also implemented the curriculum of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Hence, there is no difference left in the curriculum of CBSE and UP Board. In such a situation, now there is no justification for CBSE to run these model schools. At Prayagraj, there is one such English medium school which is in Dandupur, under Chaka block. In another significant step towards enhancing girls' education in the district, Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls' Schools will now offer education up to Class 12 for the first time starting this academic session. Out of the 20 Kasturba Gandhi schools in the district, nine have been upgraded to accommodate secondary and senior secondary education. The enrolled students are being admitted to nearby govt or govt-aided secondary schools for their education. In a more comprehensive development, three schools—Meja, Dhanupur, and Kaudihar—are being equipped to provide both education and hostel facilities. Classes in Meja and Dhanupur will begin this year itself, while Kaudihar's classes are expected to commence next year due to construction delays. For the first time, recruitment of subject-specific teachers for secondary classes is underway. The selection process is expected to be completed by July. Meanwhile, existing teaching staff already began conducting secondary-level classes since the new session started on April 1. The govt has advertised positions for two PGT (post graduate teacher) posts each in Hindi, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science, as well as principal posts. Recruitment processes have also been completed for six lab assistants, two office superintendents/clerks, and six posts each for peons, watchmen, and cooks. Nearly 750 applications have been received for various teaching and non-teaching roles, reflecting strong interest in supporting girls' education.

CPET merit list for PG admissions out
Bhubaneswar: The higher education department on Monday published a state-wide merit list for Common Postgraduate Entrance Test (CPET-2025) conducted by the State Selection Board (SSB). The merit list is required for admission to PG courses offered by state public universities and degree colleges. According to the SSB, 62,321 candidates applied for CPET-2025. As many as 56,976 candidates appeared for the test, and all of them were selected to participate in the admission process. The state has 30,802 seats offered by 116 higher educational institutes. Official sources said the results were published on the SAMS (Student Academic Management System) PG portal at 4 pm on Monday. Applicants can check the SAMS portal to view their subject-wise and social category-wise ranks, according to an official statement from the department. The next stage of admission process will start on Tuesday. Eligible applicants will be able to exercise their choice-filling options from June 3 to 8. City boy ranked all India 80th in JEE (A)
Chennai: Due to the tough JEE (Advanced) question paper this year, there was just one student from Tamil Nadu featured among the top 100 JEE rankers. The topper, Divyant Jayakumar from Chettinad Vidhyashram, got an All India Rank of 80 with 285 out of 360 marks in the entrance exam for prestigious IITs. Last year, three students from the state got within the top 100 ranks, and the topper secured the 42nd rank. IIT Kanpur, which conducted the JEE (Advanced) exam, declared the results on Monday. Of the 1,80,422 candidates who appeared for the exam, 54,378 qualified, and of them, 9,404 were girls. Tamil Nadu topper Divyant Jayakumar is planning to join computer science engineering at IIT Bombay or IIT Madras. "I was expecting a score above 280 marks. I am happy to get within the top 100 ranks. JEE (Advanced) paper two was one of the toughest papers in recent years," he said. He started the JEE preparation from Class IX onwards. He said starting the preparations very early helped him. Besides academics, he likes to listen to music and play football. Other students, Shreyas Ramakrishnan and Muhammed Safwan R, got the AIR 154 and 314 ranks, respectively. The number of students securing top 100 ranks also came down from three last year to one this year. "Unlike NEET, the poor performance in the JEE (Advanced) exam will not affect the chance of getting admissions to IITs.
