Football: Legendary 1860 Munich coach Werner Lorant dies

Times of Oman21-04-2025

The legendary German football coach Werner Lorant passed away aged 76 on Sunday, his family and former club, TSV 1860 Munich, confirmed.
As a player in the 1970s and 1980s, Lorant represented Borussia Dortmund, Rot-Weiss Essen, 1. FC Saarbrücken, Hannover 96, Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the German Cup and UEFA Cup with the latter.
But it was as the long-serving head coach of 1860 Munich between 1992 and 2001 that Lorant really made his name, leading Die Löwen (the lions) from the third division to the Bundesliga.
His greatest achievement was the team finishing fourth in 2000. This position in the Bundesliga saw 1860 enter the Champions League qualification play-off round — where they lost to English Premier League side Leeds United.
The German club confirmed Lorant's death following a long illness on Sunday, describing him as "one of the most successful coaches in the club's 125-year history."
"Football meant the world to him," his sister told 1860 fan website dieblaue24, who first reported the news. "When he no longer had football, he was no longer well. He loved Die Löwen. They were close to his heart."
'Everyone is entitled to an opinion — but only mine counts'
During his coaching career, Lorant developed a reputation for no-nonsense management.
Asked once by a journalist why he hadn't substituted a clearly injured player despite being 5-1 up against Nuremberg, he replied: "Players are only subbed if their leg falls off."
After being sent to the stands during an away game against Werder Bremen for insulting the referee, he then said the official "can be happy that I didn't slap him" — earning himself a fine of 8,000 marks (around €4,000 or $4,560).
Later in his career, he wasn't a fan of new technology and banned his players from using mobile phones, saying: "If a phone goes off [on the team bus], they can get off and use the phone to call a taxi."
His general motto as a coach was: "Everyone is entitled to an opinion — but only mine counts."
1860 Munich today: up for sale?
Nowadays, 1860 Munich – Bayern Munich's city rivals – are marooned in the third division again, having been forcibly relegated to the fourth tier in 2017 as a result of a complicated relationship with a controversial investor.
Jordanian billionaire Hasan Ismaik purchased a 60% stake in the club in 2011, helping to save it from insolvency, but he failed to understand that German football's 50+1 ownership rule prevented him from actually exercising majority control.
Following relegation to the third division in 2017, Ismaik effectively attempted to blackmail the club, withholding the necessary funding for a league license unless he was given full control — something the club were neither wiling nor legally able to do. Consequently, 1860 were automatically relegated to division four, before fighting their way back up.
But the relationship with Ismaik has remained strained — until he announced last Sunday that he would finally be interested in selling his stake in the club.
"I think 1860 needs someone new, they don't need Hasan," he told German public broadcaster ARD, referring to himself in the third person. "I want to sell the club and just be an 1860 fan."

Netherlands beat Finland to keep WC qualifier on track

BARCELONA: England kept their World Cup qualifying on track with an ugly 1-0 win while Austria and the Netherlands made belated starts to their campaigns with victories on Saturday. Harry Kane's 72nd international goal ensured England avoided the ultimate embarrassment of failing to beat Andorra. Even so, Thomas Tuchel's side were booed off in Barcelona after struggling to impress against a team ranked 173rd in the world. Tuchel is the first England manager to win his first three competitive games without conceding a goal. But given the paucity of opposition provided by Andorra, Latvia and Albania in the Group K qualifiers, that achievement rings a little hollow after this miserable display. "I'm not happy with the performance. We completely lost the momentum and couldn't get it back. We ended up in a place that was not good enough in terms of urgency," Tuchel said. "We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes because I didn't like the attitude we ended the game with. "I didn't like the lack of urgency. It did not match the occasion. It is still a World Cup qualifier." England pulled five points clear after three matches in Group K as second-placed Albania drew 0-0 at home with Serbia. Rey Manaj of Albania wasted a penalty in first-half added time. Serbia was one of three teams playing their first qualifying match on Saturday after they had been involved in Nations League playoffs. Netherlands made their debut with a crisp 2-0 win over Finland in Helsinki. Memphis Depay scored after six minutes. Denzil Dumfries, one week after his unhappy experience playing for Inter Milan in the Champions League final, added the second after 23 minutes. Netherlands jumped to third in Group G, overtaking Lithuania and Malta who drew 0-0. The Dutch are one point behind Finland and three behind leaders Poland who did not play. Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch scored as Austria beat Romania 2-1 in Vienna. Florin Tanase headed an added-time reply for the visitors who had squandered several chances in the closing stages. Bosnia-Herzegovina lead Group H on nine points after Edin Dzeko scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory home over San Marino. Romania, Cyprus and Austria all have three points.

Roma appoint Gasperini as new manager

ROME: Former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been appointed AS Roma's new manager, the Serie A club said on Friday, with the 67-year-old signing a three-year contract. Gasperini left Atalanta on Saturday after nine years in charge, and will replace the retired Claudio Ranieri at Roma who finished fifth in the standings last season to qualify for the Europa League, a trophy Gasperini won with his previous club. Ranieri became Roma's third managerial appointment last season when the 73-year-old came out of retirement to return for his third spell in charge at the club where he began his playing career and now has an advisory role. Gasperini announced in February that he would not be signing a new deal at Atalanta, with his contract ending in June and while there was an option to extend it by a year, he decided the time was right to move on. "Gasperini's career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development," a Roma club statement said. "Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission." He helped take Atalanta from Serie A strugglers to regular European football, winning the Europa League in 2024, which was not only the club's maiden European triumph, but Gasperini's first trophy in a long managerial career which began in 2003. Gasperini began his coaching career at Crotone and has also managed Genoa, Inter Milan and Palermo, but made a name for himself at Atalanta, achieving European qualification in his first season after an absence of 26 years for the club. Atalanta led the Serie A standings last season in December and were involved in the title race for a long period before finishing third for the fourth time under Gasperini. Roma won the Conference League in 2022 and were losing finalists in the Europa League the following year and will look to Gasperini to take them back to Champions League football for the first time since 2019. — Reuters

Chelsea complete signing of Delap from Ipswich

LONDON: Chelsea have signed striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town on a deal until until 2031 after triggering his £30million ($40.6 million) release clause. An agreement was reached between the clubs last week for the Englandunder-21 international, who becomes the Blues' first summer signing and can join immediately due to Fifa's 10-day June transfer window. That will enable him to take part in the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States, though if he travels with the team it will means he will miss the European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia. The 22-year-old said on the club's official website: "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." Chelsea reportedly fended off interest from Manchester United, with the lack of European football next season for the Old Trafford side understood to be a factor in the player's decision to pick west London. Enzo Maresca's side will play in the Champions League after finishing fourth in his first season in charge, the first time the club has qualified for Europe's top competition since 2022. Delap's signing means the pair will be reunited after working together with Manchester City's under-23 team while Maresca was in charge during the 2020/21 season, and latterly with the senior squad when the Italian was assistant to Pep Guardiola. Delap made only six first-team appearances for City, scoring once, before loan spells with Stoke, Preston and Hull. Despite Ipswich's relegation from the Premier League, which made his release clause active, he adapted quickly to the top flight by scoring 12 times in his first full season in the division — comfortably his best goal return — having spent most of his senior career in the Championship. Chelsea have been stretched thin in attack this season, with injuries to Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu leaving the team without a fit striker for periods of the campaign. Of those two, only Jackson has scored in the Premier League and the need for credible competition and support for the Senegal international has long been apparent. — PA Media/dpa
