Lucas may be named UM basketball coach next weekend and hire Columbus coach as assistant

Miami Herald01-03-2025

Duke associate head coach Jai Lucas is expected to be named head coach of the University of Miami men's basketball team as early as next weekend, and Miami Columbus High coach Andrew Moran will likely be approached for a position on the Hurricanes' staff, according to multiple sources.
Arkansas assistant coach Bruiser Flint, who was on Kentucky's staff with Lucas from 2020-22, is also expected to be considered for a job on the UM staff.
Lucas, the 36-year-old son of former NBA star and coach John Lucas, is in negotiations with Miami and the timing of his arrival is being finalized, according to multiple well-placed sources.
The Hurricanes' season finale is at home March 8 at noon against N.C. State, and they will not make the ACC Tournament as they dropped to 6-23 overall and 2-16 in the conference after Saturday's 92-73 loss to North Carolina.
Duke, the No. 2 ranked team in the country and a national title contender, plays its regular season finale March 8 against North Carolina. The pressing question was whether Lucas would remain with the Blue Devils through the post-season, but it appears he may not.
Lucas would be replacing interim UM coach Bill Courtney, who took over on Dec. 26 after the unexpected retirement of Jim Larranaga, who led the Hurricanes to the Final Four in 2023 and the Elite Eight the year before that. The current Miami staff includes assistant coaches DJ Irving and Kotie Kimble.
As Lucas puts together his staff, Moran is a logical choice.
Lucas is considered a top recruiter and was primarily responsible for Duke landing Columbus High twin brothers Cameron and Cayden Boozer, who were also heavily recruited by Miami. Lucas worked at Kentucky for two seasons as a recruiting coordinator and assistant coach after seven years at Texas, his alma mater.
Moran was hired at Columbus in 2019 and is about to complete his sixth season coaching the Explorers. He has guided Columbus to three consecutive state championships with teams led on the court by the Boozer twins, sons of former Duke and NBA standout Carlos Boozer.
Over that span, Moran has compiled a 136-32 record including a 107-13 record over the past four seasons since the Boozers joined the team.
Prior to his stint at Columbus, Moran also won a state title coaching Miami Christian in 2015.
This season, Columbus is vying to become only the second team in Miami-Dade to win four consecutive state titles and are ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps. The Explorers are expected to be invited to Chipotle Nationals to compete for a national championship on April 3-5 in Fishers, Indiana.
Cameron and Cayden Boozer were recently named McDonald's All-Americans and will participate in that game on April 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Mavericks schedule private pre-Draft workout for Duke's Cooper Flagg, per report

The Dallas Mavericks have the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25. In preparation, they've scheduled a private workout with Duke freshman Cooper Flagg for June 17, per ESPN . The 6-foot-9 Flagg is expected to go first-overall in this month's draft, but this move would only make the likelihood of that occurring increase. Per the report, the Mavericks have no other plans to work out any other players in private like they will Flagg. The implication there is not just that the Mavericks expect to take Flagg at No. 1, but also that, were they to trade their 1:1 pick in order to acquire a haul of win-now assets to pair with Anthony Davis and — eventually — the rehabilitating Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from surgery to repair an ACL tear suffered in March — they would not be receiving meaningful 2025 draft picks in return. [Related: Inside the mind of Duke's Cooper Flagg: 'He wants to destroy his competition' ] All indications — both public and private, per ESPN — seem to be that the Mavericks will keep the pick and use it to acquire Flagg, however, especially given general manager Nico Harrison's refrain of defense winning championships being the reason the organization dealt Luka Doncic to the Lakers in a shocking February trade. Essentially, Flagg himself as viewed as a win-now asset. Flagg's offensive potential is considerable — he scored 19.2 points per game as a freshman at Duke, with 4.2 assists per game as a forward — but defense is where he truly shines. He averaged 1.4 blocks and steals per game while pulling down an average of 6.2 defensive rebounds, and the only questions about him entering the 2024-2025 NCAA season were about how quickly his offense would catch up to his stellar defensive chops. Flagg ended up winning award after award for his one-and-done performance, which also included a trip to the Final Four for Duke. The Mavericks had just a 1.8% chance of securing the first-overall pick in the NBA Draft, and only even had that much of one because the team went into freefall falling the Doncic trade. Despite the almost nonexistent chance of being in line to draft Flagg, however, the Mavericks ended up winning the NBA Draft lottery, and are now weeks away from bringing him to Dallas if they choose to do so. Dick Vitale has an extension with ESPN — and a college basketball event in his honor

Dick Vitale is inextricably intertwined with college basketball, with his iconic voice, exuberant style and enthusiastic catchphrases melding into a soundtrack for nearly five decades of the sport's history. And the broadcasting great's influence is sticking around next season, too, both in person on game days and through an addition to the college basketball calendar named in his honor. ESPN announced Monday that Vitale has signed a contract through the 2027-28 season, while ESPN Events is launching the Dick Vitale Invitational — the first matchup coming with a season-opening tilt between Duke and Texas on Nov. 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Fittingly, the announcement comes on Vitale's 86th birthday, and months after he returned to the airwaves after being gone for two years amid a fourth battle with cancer. The Basketball Hall of Famer, also a former college and NBA coach, has been with ESPN since it launched in 1979 and called the network's first college basketball broadcast. 'So many times, awards and honors come to people after they're long gone,' Vitale said of the Invitational's birth in an interview with The Associated Press. 'And to get it while you're living is just a great, great feeling.'
