Nepal: Teachers protesting for education reforms clash with police

Hans India27-04-2025

Kathmandu: Police and protesting teachers clashed at New Baneshwar in Nepal on Sunday during a demonstration, according to local media reports.
The confrontation broke out when teachers gathered on the Bijulibazar–New Baneshwar road section and attempted to breach a restricted area, prompting police to intervene.
Tensions escalated rapidly, as protesters hurled stones at the police. In response, police forces used batons and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators, according to the leading Nepali newspaper, The Kathmandu Post.
The Teachers' Federation Nepal, an umbrella body representing school teachers, has been staging demonstrations for the past 25 days, demanding the immediate promulgation of the School Education Act that incorporates their various demands.
The agitating teachers have remained firm on continuing their protests until the Bill is passed and their concerns are addressed.
A major demand of the protesting teachers is to ensure pay and perks on par with those of civil servants.
Other demands include the payment of grades, allowances for relief quota teachers, and the establishment of a separate dedicated hospital or discounted health checkup services at the Civil Service Hospital.
Permanent status for temporary teachers through internal competitions is another key demand.
Additionally, teachers have also sought to be placed under the federal government's purview, although this demand has been downplayed following criticism that it contradicts the spirit of the Constitution.
Talks between the government and school teachers, held nearly a month after the agitation began, ended without any agreement on Saturday.
The protesters remained steadfast in their demand for the immediate promulgation of the School Education Act as their bottom line.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Nepal has issued an interim order asking the government to address the legitimate demands of the protesting teachers and ensure that the teachers return to classrooms.
The order stated that the ongoing teachers' protests in the country have violated the student's right to education, and it would continue if the court didn't intervene, local media reported.

Legal procedures followed while arresting female influencer: Kolkata Police

Kolkata Police have dismissed criticisms that they have "unlawfully" arrested a 22-year-old female Instagram influencer for allegedly uploading a video with communal comments, and claimed that all legal procedures were followed. They defended the arrest of influencer Sharmistha Panoli saying that the case was "duly investigated and adhering to legal procedures". "Kolkata Police acted lawfully according to the procedure established by law. The accused was not arrested for expressing patriotism or for personal belief; legal actions were taken for sharing offensive content which promotes hatred among the communities," Kolkata Police posted on Facebook on Sunday. "The case was duly investigated and adhering to legal procedures, several attempts were made to serve notice u/s 35 of BNSS to the accused but every time she was found absconding," the Kolkata Police stated. "Some social media accounts are spreading false information that Kolkata Police has unlawfully arrested a law student for opposing Pakistan. This narrative is mischievous and misleading," the Kolkata Police added. A case against the woman was lodged at the Garden Reach Police Station on May 15 based on allegations that she posted a video that Kolkata Police claimed: "was insulting to the religious belief of a class of citizen of India and amounted to promoting disharmony and hatred between different communities". The case was registered under the appropriate section of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Hate speech and abusive language should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, the Kolkata Police stated, further urging all "concerned to act responsibly and refrain from doing anything that would benefit our enemies". The accused woman, booked under relevant sections for promoting enmity between different groups, malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, apart from intentional insult, provoking breach of peace, has been sent to judicial custody till June 13 after her bail petition was rejected by a Kolkata court. BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar criticised the Kolkata Police for their "overactiveness" in arresting the woman for allegedly posting the video. The BJP leader has alleged that the arrest was made "not for justice, but for appeasement" keeping in mind the "vote-bank vendetta". "Sharmistha Panoli, 22, a law student, arrested for a now-deleted video and a public apology. No riots. No unrest. Yet Mamata Banerjee's police acted overnight not for justice, but for appeasement. But when TMC leaders insult Sanatan Dharma mock Maha Kumbh and push communal poison there's no FIR, no arrest, no apology. This is not justice. This is vote-bank vendetta," Majumdar posted.

Punjab speaker seeks SAD rebel MLA Sukhi's response on July 29

Banga MLA Dr Sukhwinder Sukhi, who is facing a disqualification plea for defecting from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been called by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha speaker for a hearing on July 29. The two-time MLA, who switched from the SAD to the AAP in August last year, will be given a chance to 'present his side'. The ruling party appointed Sukhi as the state vice-president for the Doaba zone on Saturday. According to the Tenth Schedule, included in the Constitution in 1985 and popularly known as the anti-defection law, a member can be disqualified if he or she voluntarily gives up membership of a party. Advocate HC Arora has filed a petition before the assembly speaker on the matter. Punjab Vidhan Sabha speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan said the member has been asked to present his side. 'Dr Sukhi is an honourable member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, and he has the same legal rights as all other members,' the speaker said in response to a question about the status of the petition against the legislator during a press conference held here. Sukhi was scheduled to appear for a hearing on May 27, but since the speaker was not available that day, he was given a new date, said an official of the state assembly. Sukhi was inducted into the party by chief minister and AAP state chief Bhagwant Mann in Chandigarh on August 14, 2024. He was later appointed as chairman of the Punjab State Container and Warehousing Corporation (CONWARE). A doctor by profession, he first got elected to the state assembly from Banga seat in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in the 2017 elections on a SAD ticket. He was again elected as a legislator in 2022.
