K-9s show off skills during Police Week competition
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — K-9s from across the region put their skills on display Thursday.
A K-9 competition was held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, as part of this week's National Police Week events.
NATO is coming to Dayton, here's what to know
The annual competition featured six military dogs and 14 local police K-9 units.
One trainer told 2 NEWS its about more than just obedience skills, its about building that relationship between dog and handler.
'There's a rapport stage before you start your training. The rapport stage might just be you loving on your dog, petting, making sure the dog trusts you,' said Mantrease Robertson, K-9 trainer. 'After that you can start training. It's long, strenuous. Everyday there's always another task that you can learn.'
WPAFB will conclude Police Week with a closing ceremony tomorrow.

APD: K-9 killed by ‘friendly' fire during SWAT standoff
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – KRQE News 13 has learned the Albuquerque police dog that died in the line of duty last week was killed with friendly fire. 'You know, our canines are here to save and preserve human life. They are here to preserve human life, both of suspects and officers. And this was a difficult situation like mayor said, you know, he did lose his life to friendly fire,' said Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina. Police were trying to arrest 39-year-old Jorge Dominguez, who had fled from a SWAT standoff earlier in the week. Police said Dominguez, armed with a loaded gun, tried to flee again from the hotel when he was spotted, ran back into his room, and jumped out a window. SWAT officers then deployed the rebel. Gunshots rang out at some point, and Rebel was hit. Dominguez was also killed. APD said while it's still early in the investigation, they do not have any evidence at this point that Dominguez fired his gun. 'As we get closer, we will be able to explain and show the specific dynamics that were occurring that day that really limited our officers and their response to this situation,' said Chief Medina. To honor Rebel, the Sandia Peak Tramway will donate $1 from every ticket purchase to APD's K-9 Unit. The city said those funds will go toward a new training facility near Daniel Webster Park. Elmira police bring back K-9 program after receiving funding
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)— The Elmira Police Department is bringing back its K-9 program for the first time in over ten years after the Elmira City Council approved funding. The department will receive $122,095 in funding from the county. The funds will go towards the K-9 and other handler fees. 'The dog ranges between fifteen and sixteen thousand dollars, which seems to be the going rate, and then a new patroling vehicle. You're looking at forty-five to fifteen thousand dollars for that. There are those fees and then the handler training fee, and then all of the little things that go with it,' said Kristen Thorne, Elmira Police Department Chief. Corning Farmers Market kicks off first day of season Chief Thorne hopes that everything will be up and running by the end of 2025. 'I'm in the process of trying to get the bids and trying to find the place that we're going to buy it from, so when that happens, most of them it takes a couple of months to do the training on the dog,' said Thorne. The K-9s will be able to help sniff out drugs and complete tasks to help the department. Bikers urged to follow traffic laws and safety tips 'We are looking to get a dual-purpose dog so he or she will be able to do tracking, building searches, article searches, and then search for narcotics,' said Thorne.' Fentanyl, methenamine, cocaine, we do not test for obviously marijuana anymore, you know, because marijuana is legal now, so the dog won't be trained on that,' he said. Chief Thorne is currently in the process of choosing a K-9 to add to the department. 'I've reached out to several kennels, I have one in mind. There have been a lot of dogs in surrounding agencies that have come from this kennel, so that's what I would like to do, but that has not been cemented in stone as of yet,' said Thorne. Widely shared video claims to show Ukrainian soldiers shooting deserters. Here's what we know
In early June 2025, a video circulated online claiming to show Ukrainian soldiers shooting deserters near the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. The footage circulated amid reports of ongoing fighting near the city, a crucial transport hub in the Donetsk region. A posting (archived) of the video by the right-wing media personality Alex Jones had more than 4.6 million views at the time of this writing. (X user @RealAlexJones) Jones wrote: NATO backed, Ukrainian military caught by a Russian drones camera executing deserters. The Ukrainian soldiers shot their own deserters in the Pokrovsk sector As Ukraine slowly reaches the last stage before a collapse of combat capabilities. Exclusive footage from Russian scouts, who observed the AFU on the Shevchenko-Pokrovsk line while conducting aerial reconnaissance. Two Ukrainian "fighters" forced three fellow soldiers to their knees and shot them. The video shows that one of the unfortunate ones, hearing the first shots, rushed from the spot, but he did not manage to run far. Units of the 68th Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were stationed in this area. The video mainly circulated across (archived) X (archived) and on (archived) Facebook (archived). However, Snopes' investigation could not confirm exactly what the video, which was purportedly recorded near Pokrovsk, showed, nor the time or exact location it was recorded. Ukraine's criminal code punishes military deserters with up to 12 years in prison during periods of martial law. The code does not include capital punishment for desertion. We reached out to the Russian military to ask if they could confirm that the video was authentic, when it was recorded, where, and what it showed, and await replies to our queries. One early version (archived) of the footage circulated on June 4, 2025. The Telegram channel that shared the early version of the footage was called "Work, brothers," a phrase used to show support for Russian law enforcement. Searches on the Telegram channel of the Russian Ministry of Defense located a video (archived) posted on April 16, 2025, with similar graphics to the one shared around June 4. Both videos appeared to be recorded using thermal cameras (indicated by the lighter shade of people in the video compared to the landscape) and featured a matching rotating compass wheel at the bottom of the video. The Russian MOD said on Telegram that the April 16 video showed drone operators destroying "ammunition and fuel depots, equipment and personnel" in Luhansk and Donetsk, including near Pokrovsk. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian strikes hit near Pokrovsk on this date. Claims also said the June 4 video was recorded by drone. According to online AI detectors Sightengine and Hive Moderation, it was unlikely the video was generated by AI. Desertion has been an ongoing problem for the Ukrainian Armed Forces since Russia's invasion in 2022.
