Itoje to lead Lions for first time against Argentina
Maro Itoje will captain the British and Irish Lions for the first time in their Australia tour warm-up match against Argentina in Dublin on Friday.
The Saracens second row leads a starting side in the non-cap international that features fellow England international Marcus Smith at full-back with the Red Rose pair of Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith the half-backs.
Ireland's Tadhg Furlong will have the chance to prove his fitness after struggling with a calf injury that ruled him out of Leinster's United Rugby Championship final victory over the Bulls.
Furlong is included on a bench that also features Ireland hooker Ronan Kelleher.
"Congratulations to Maro Itoje ahead of leading out the Lions for the first time. It's a truly special moment and one that very few players ever get to experience," said head coach Andy Farrell.
"Maro has led the group well during our time in Portugal and then Dublin this week. This is also our first opportunity to show what the 2025 Lions are about and what we want to stand for as a team."
A strong Argentina team will be captained by hooker Julian Montoya, six days after the hooker featured in the Leicester side that lost the English Premiership final to Bath.
Santiago Carreras is at full-back with Tomas Albornoz at fly-half, while Saracens flanker Juan Martin Gonzalez is in a back row also featuring the experienced Pablo Matera.
"We know all their players and we expect them to be playing hard," said Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi, whose side are ranked fifth in the world.
"They miss some cohesion or maybe not because they are such top players they can click in one moment."
The 30-year-old Itoje, previously appointed as Lions captain for the upcoming three-Test tour of Australia, skippered England to second place in this year's Six Nations.
The Lions, made up of leading players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, play their first Test in Australia on July 19 at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Macleod wary of Japan as Wales seek end to losing streak
Back-row forward Josh Macleod expects a Japan side coached by veteran boss Eddie Jones to pose plenty of problems when Wales bid to end their lengthy winless run next month. Wales travel to Japan on the back of 17 straight Test defeats -- a record for a major nation -- since they last enjoyed a victory, over Georgia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Former Australia and England coach Jones, now in charge of Japan for the second time, hopes to extend that woeful sequence during a two-Test series in Kitakyushu and Kobe on July 5 and 12 respectively. "I'm not too familiar with him (Jones) myself but I have heard on the grapevine that he's got certain attributes. I think we'll find those out on the pitch," said Macleod on Wednesday. "No Test game is easy, but as a group we haven't shied away from it (the losing streak). "We've touched on the fact that we are looking to end that, we've got a job to do in the conditions. We've got to pull together and stay tight as a group, look to produce on the pitch and get that win." Macleod has returned to the Wales squad to provide loose forward competition for Taulupe Faletau, Aaron Wainwright and others following a career blighted by injuries. The 28-year-old was denied a Six Nations debut against Scotland in 2021 after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in training. Macleod had to wait until the 2022 clash against Georgia to win his first senior cap, only to then miss the 2023 World Cup with a shoulder injury. South Africa Moves Closer To Hosting Formula One Race
Toby Venter, owner of the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit near Johannesburg, said on Wednesday that plans to upgrade the track to Formula One standards had been approved by the controlling body. He told reporters the venue that last hosted a F1 race in 1993 had been given the green light by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to implement design proposals. "Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula One to African soil," said Venter. "When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we made a commitment to restore it, not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across Africa. "The acceptance by the FIA of our grade one design is a major step forward in that journey," added Venter, an importer of luxury vehicles. Kyalami and Cape Town in South Africa, Rwanda and Morocco have expressed interest in bringing F1 racing back to Africa. The British company charged with doing the upgrades said they were "minor", and could be completed within three months. FIA has given Kyalami a three-year deadline for completion. Upgrades, which will not change the 4.5 kilometre (2.8 miles) circuit layout, include enhancing run-off areas and barriers. "The proposed FIA grade one upgrade focuses on enhancing run-off areas, barrier systems, debris fencing, kerbs, and drainage," a company spokesman said. "This is a light-touch upgrade in engineering terms, but one that enhances the already excellent circuit standards to meet modern grade one requirements." More spectator zones and grandstands have also been earmarked as part of a bigger upgrade, leaving Kyalami as the only grade one certified venue in Africa. Kyalami has hosted 21 F1 Grands Prix, the last in 1993 won by Alain Prost for Williams. The annual event was discontinued because it proved too costly for the then owners to host.
