TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Former NBA star Shawn Kemp pleaded guilty to an assault charge on Tuesday for shooting at two men inside a vehicle in a Washington state mall parking lot.

Kemp, 55, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma as part of a plea agreement, according to the county Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The Toyota 4Runner the men were inside and another vehicle were damaged in the March 2023 shooting, but the men were not hurt.

Kemp was initially charged with one count of first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement, but prosecutors last week added another count of assault as well as a drive-by shooting charge, The Seattle Times reported. Convictions on those charges could have resulted in a lengthy prison term.

He will be sentenced in August. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Howe recommended that Kemp be sentenced to nine months in jail, one year of Department of Corrections supervision and support after he is released, and to pay restitution.

Kemp, a six-time NBA all-star who played for the Seattle SuperSonics from 1989 to 1997, declined to comment to the newspaper on Tuesday.

'Shawn is committed to moving forward in a positive direction,' Kemp's attorney, Tim Leary, told the Times. 'He was presented with an offer from the state that allows him to take responsibility, but I think also recognizes the self-defence nature of how this transpired.'

According to court documents filed by Kemp's attorneys, Kemp and several employees who worked at his cannabis dispensary were at a Seattle concert venue when Kemp's truck was broken into on March 8, 2023. An employee's purse was stolen along with keys to Kemp's business, a cellphone, paperwork and sports memorabilia, including game-worn Gary Payton and Kemp jerseys that were to be auctioned off for charity, the defence's trial brief says.

Using a phone tracking app, Kemp located and briefly tried to talk to the driver of the 4Runner that was circling a casino parking lot, according to the trial brief. The men in the vehicle afterward dumped some of Kemp's belongings but hung on to the phone, the brief says.

Kemp later saw his phone was near the Tacoma Mall. He drove there, spotted the same 4Runner and 'expressed his understandable frustration' with the driver, according to the brief.

The brief says a man in the back seat 'fired off a round from a handgun at Mr. Kemp. Mr. Kemp returned fire and attempted to disable the Toyota. It did not work.' The 4Runner fled and when the vehicle was found abandoned days later, an empty holster was found inside but there was no gun, documents said.

A police call log included in court records indicates that at least one witness who called 911 reported that two men were firing at each other.

Howe, in a statement explaining the plea agreement, wrote that because of the two witnesses' past crimes of dishonesty and the 'fact that those people were illegally in possession' of Kemp's belongings, the case should be resolved short of trial.

They forced the normally efficient Indiana Pacers into 19 turnovers in the first half to lead by 12 at the break. The advantage swelled to 15 early in the fourth quarter, and it looked like the Thunder were off to one of their usual blowout victories. They fell apart late, then Tyrese Haliburton hit a mid-range dagger in the final second that gave Indiana a 111-110 victory on Thursday night. 'I thought we were pretty good,' Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said. 'We had control of the game for the most part of it. It is a 48-minute game. They (Pacers) teach you that lesson more than anyone else in the league, the hard way.' The homecourt advantage Oklahoma City fought all season to gain vanished in a game it dominated for three quarters. The collapse wasted a 38-point effort by league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Now, the Thunder will be under pressure heading into Game 2 on Sunday. 'We've just got to focus on being better,' Gilgeous-Alexander said. 'The series isn't first to one, it's first to four. We have four more games to get, they have three. That's just where we are. We've got to understand that and we've got to get to four before they get to three (more) if we want to win the NBA championship.' After Oklahoma City had Indiana's offense out of sorts in the first half, the Pacers committed just five turnovers in the second. 'I thought they loosened us up a little bit,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. 'They took better care of the ball. Obviously, I'm sure that was a huge theme for them coming in and at the half.' This isn't the first time this has happened to the Thunder this postseason. The Thunder lost a game they largely controlled in Game 1 of the second-round series against the Denver Nuggets. Aaron Gordon's 3-pointer gave Denver a 121-119 win. Oklahoma City responded and won the series 4-3. The Thunder believe they can use that experience to their advantage. 'We lost at the end of the day,' Gilgeous-Alexander said. 'We lost Game 1. We've lost Game 1 before. On the other side of that, we came out a better team. That's our goal. That's our mentality, to try to learn a lesson from the loss, like we always do, and move forward and be better.' This wasn't new for Indiana, either. The Pacers have made a habit of rallying late to win games this postseason, most notably in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Knicks. 'The common denominator is them,' Daigneault said. 'That's a really good team. Credit them for not only tonight but their run. They've had so many games like that that have seemed improbable. ‘Man, I want to play here,' Brown says after joining Spitfires

Article content A Scarsdale, N.Y. native, Brown is verbally committed to Yale University, but started exploring his options before university when the NCAA relaxed rules on accepting players from junior hockey. Article content 'I never really considered the OHL,' the 18-year-old Brown said. 'I always wanted to play college hockey. I didn't put any effort into trying to play in OHL. Once they changed that rule, it became intriguing.' Article content Brown played last season for the powerhouse Shattuck-St. Mary's prep program in Minnesota and one of his first junior stops was Windsor when general manager Bill Bowler invited to attend a game. Article content Article content 'It was a great atmosphere,' the six-foot-two, 201-pound Brown said. 'Honestly, the rink, the atmosphere and the fans. I think it was against Kingston (a 7-1 win on March 6) and the rink was packed. There was a fight and everyone was into it and it was like, 'Man, I want to play here.'' Article content On Friday, Brown officially signed on with the Spitfires. Article content 'We think this is a great signing for our club,' Spitfires' general manager Bill Bowler said. 'He's a steady defender, a real good skater and I think there's some offence that's untapped. The family moved to the U.S. when he was six. Article content Article content 'Definitely not just the same path as every other player,' Brown said. 'My dad's actually form Detroit. That's another reason for Windsor is that there's a ton of family close.' Article content Brown had plenty of junior hockey options before choosing Windsor. He was drafted in 2024 by Youngstown in the United States Hockey League and in 2023 by Connecticut in the National Collegiate Development Conference. Article content 'I could have played in the USHL, but I started thinking about my options,' said Brown, who appeared in two games for Youngstown this past season. 'The OHL is an unbelievable league with great players and produces the most players to the NHL.' Article content Brown helped Shattuck-St. Mary's win the USA Hockey Youth Tier I 18U National Championship in April. Brown scored a goal in the final that saw Shattuck-St. Mary's beat the Boston Jr. Eagles 8-1.
