Mads Pedersen reclaims Giro d'Italia pink jersey with stage three sprint win

The Guardian11-05-2025

Mads Pedersen reclaimed the leader's pink jersey with victory in the third stage of the Giro d'Italia as the race bade farewell to Albania.
The Danish rider repeated his first-stage success by holding off Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) in a sprint finish in Vlorë. Pedersen's Lidl-Trek team controlled the peloton, reeling in an early breakaway that included Britain's stage two winner, Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers).
After helping Pedersen successfully negotiate a climb with 40km to go, Matthias Vacek produced a strong lead-out to send the 29-year-old on his way, while Movistar's Orluis Aular matched his third-placed finish from the opening stage.
Having gone into the day with a one-second deficit to race leader Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), the bonus seconds gained were enough to give Pedersen a nine-second advantage over the Slovenian.
'Wow, to have two stage victories already and now back in the pink – that's exactly what we wanted today,' Pedersen said. 'This was the plan from this morning, to put a good pace on the long climb to control it for ourselves and give me a breather.'
'Then from the climb on, it was controlling as far as we could and it was exactly as we wanted – and then [Giulio] Ciccone and Vacek [were] there doing an amazing lead out,' he added.
The race now heads across the Adriatic Sea to Italy, and will resume in Alberobello on Tuesday following a rest day.

Ranieri turns down Italy job to stay on at Roma as senior advisor

MILAN, June 10 (Reuters) - Claudio Ranieri said on Tuesday he has turned down the vacant Italy manager's job, after the four-times world champions sacked Luciano Spalletti, and will stay on with AS Roma as their senior advisor. Former Napoli coach Spalletti, 66, announced his own dismissal on Sunday following Italy's 3-0 drubbing by Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier on Friday. Ranieri, who recently retired for a second time after his spell at Roma last season, said he was honoured to have been offered the job by Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina. "I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position totally," he told Italian news agency ANSA. "The Friedkins (Roma owners) gave me their full support and backing for whatever decision I had made regarding the national team but the decision is mine alone." Ranieri helped Roma finish fifth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Europa League. The 73-year-old Italian has been replaced by former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma.

Christian Pulisic's DAD takes aim at Landon Donovan over criticism of AC Milan star pulling out of national team duty - and tells retired star to 'grow a pair' in fiery social media post

Christian Pulisic 's dad has leapt to the defence of his AC Milan star son and fired back at Landon Donovan as a row over US national team duty rumbles on. The former Chelsea winger came under fire from retired star Donovan after ruling himself out of Gold Cup action in 2025 after a long campaign in Italy with Milan. Donovan made comment about the decision, without explicitly naming Pulisic, but it was enough to draw the ire from the winger's father, Mark. During FOX's coverage of the UEFA Nations League final, Donovan said: 'This is what it means to represent your country. 'And if you don't want to take this, as a professional soccer player and someone who gets the opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and responsibly, then don't come in. 'This is what it means. He's [Ronaldo] 40 years old, he played a long-a*s season, he's tired, he was out there grinding and hurt himself in the process. Mark Pulisic took to social media and told Donovan to 'grow a pair' over a criticism 'And I can't help but think about some of our [USMNT] guys on vacation right now, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's p***ing me off.' In response, Mark Pulisic took to social media and told Donovan to 'grow a pair' as he brought up Donovan's sabbatical from the national team during his own career. Back in 2013, Donovan missed two World Cup qualifiers due to an extended off-season sabbatical - before later being left off of the squad by Jurgen Klinsmann. Taking to social media this time, Pulisic Snr wrote: 'This guy is talking about commitment... look in the mirror + grow a pair and call names out or are you afraid next time you want an interview you will get rejected again'. Accompanying his post on X was a screenshot of an interaction with ChatGPT, where he has asked: 'Tell me about Landon Donovan's sabbatical and why he took it'. The AI response claimed that former LA Galaxy forward 'was feeling physically and mentally exhausted' and 'felt the need to step back and take time for himself'. Pulisic's father has never been one to shy away from the limelight and, during the winger's time at Chelsea in 2022, spoke out over his lack of playing time. Mark Pulisic wrote: 'The sad thing is he loves the club, teammates, and London... puts his heart and soul into being a pro. Onwards and upwards my boy... big six months ahead..' The winger would go on to leave Chelsea that summer and join AC Milan, where he has since recorded 32 goals and 23 assists from 100 appearances. In the first of two warm-up matches before this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup, the USMNT suffered a 2-1 defeat by Turkey on Saturday. It was a performance reflective of the squad that head coach Mauricio Pochettino selected - with multiple USMNT starters not available due to recovering from injuries or being tied to clubs competing in the Club World Cup. While the USMNT hasn't sent its best to the Gold Cup in over a decade, the performance in Connecticut showed that the depth in this team is shallow.

Tuesday's football predictions and 13/1 acca tips: Netherlands & Republic of Ireland to win

Tuesday football tips The final matches of the summer international break take place early this week as nations face World Cup qualifiers and friendlies before the end of the season. The Club World Cup is around the corner for some, but for most these matches will spell the end of 2024/25, though many countries are already preparing for the 2026 World Cup. That is especially true for teams like the Netherlands, who face another World Cup qualifier this week alongside sides such as Italy, Wales and the South American nations. And other nations are simply contesting friendlies as they look to test themselves against varied opposition, with the Republic of Ireland taking on Luxembourg and Northern Ireland play Iceland. Ahead of these matches, we've put together a small accumulator for three of the Tuesday fixtures featuring Northern Ireland, Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, with odds of 13/1 at Bet365 for any interested punters. Luxembourg vs Republic of Ireland prediction The Republic of Ireland are yet to kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign in a difficult group containing Portugal and Hungary, though a 4-2 aggregate win in the Nations League play-off with Bulgaria has shown that they are more than capable of competing with those nations outside of the top tier. Heimir Hallgrimsson's side drew 1-1 with Senegal last week in their first friendly of the summer international break, and this match should provide a far easier opponent after a respectable result at the Aviva Stadium. Luxembourg have lost six of their last 10, though they drew with Bulgaria, Belarus and Northern Ireland while also beating Sweden in a surprise result. However, the minnows have conceded 12 goals in their last 10 matches and often against inferior sides to Ireland, so the hosts remain the clear favourites. While Ireland have lost five of their last 10, those results came against Portugal, England and Greece, and they have beaten Finland and Bulgaria twice each in that time, scoring seven goals in the process. Due to the obvious gap in quality there is little value in several of the main markets on football betting sites, so we think a wager on the Republic of Ireland to win to nil provides the best value at 2/1 with William Hill. Tuesday football prediction 1: Republic of Ireland to win to nil - 2/1 William Hill Northern Ireland vs Iceland prediction This match throws together two sides ranked 71st and 74th in the world respectively, as Iceland travel to face Northern Ireland in Belfast. Michael O'Neill's side are yet to begin their World Cup qualifying campaign, though they lost 2-1 to Denmark last week in another friendly. But as they gear up to face Iceland, Northern Ireland have lost just three of their last 10 matches, two of which were to Sweden and Denmark – teams ranked within the top 30 in the world. Interestingly, each of these losses was in an away game, with the difference between playing home and away illustrated by following a 1-0 loss away in Bulgaria with a 5-0 home win. Iceland beat a poor Scotland team 3-1 last week but that is just their third win in 10 games, having lost to Turkey and Wales alongside a disappointing 5-2 aggregate defeat to Kosovo in the Nations League relegation play-offs. And it's Northern Ireland who are the slight favourites in this one, so we've gone with a simple wager here, with the host priced at 11/10 to win with various betting sites including Ladbrokes. Tuesday football prediction 2: Northern Ireland to beat Iceland - 11/10 Ladbrokes Netherlands vs Malta prediction The Netherlands' loss on penalties to Spain in the Nations League quarter-finals showed that the Dutch are certainly back among Europe's elite after a good showing at Euro 2024, and they head into their second World Cup qualifier having won their opener against Finland 2-0 away from home. The Dutch will be expected to win Group G, and their second test comes against a Malta side ranked 169th in the world. Malta have lost five of their last 10 matches, with two draws coming against Andorra and Lithuania and the wins against Moldova, Andorra and Liechtenstein. Within those matches, they lost 7-1 to Czechia and 2-0 to both Poland and Greece, illustrating the fact that they can concede quite a few goals when up against top-tier opposition. And the match against the Dutch will be a far tougher task than any of their last games, with Ronald Koeman's side having lost just two of their last 10. The Netherlands have played England, Spain and Germany in that time and have scored 19 goals, including three against Spain and four against Hungary. And there's real potential for goals against a lowly Malta side who tend to concede against the top teams, so we think a wager on over 4.5 goals could provide value at 6/5.
