Rubbed my eyes, couldn't believe AIR-3, says MP's JEE star Majid

Indore: Breaking long-held notions that success in competitive exams requires expensive coaching in metro cities, 17-year-old Majid Mujahid Hussain from Burhanpur achieved an extraordinary feat by securing AIR-3 in JEE Advanced 2025 on Monday morning. Majid, a student of a residential school in Burhanpur, was asleep in his hostel room when the results were announced at 6am. His aunt, Navid Ali, who teaches at the same school, was with him when he received a call from his parents in Jalgaon, urging him to check his result. "When I saw AIR-3, I couldn't believe my eyes. I rubbed them and checked again — it was true," Majid told TOI. He aspires to pursue computer science at IIT-Bombay. Chief minister Mohan Yadav congratulated Majid, posting on X: "Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Shri Majid Hussain ji from Burhanpur for bringing glory to Madhya Pradesh by achieving AIR-3 in JEE-Advanced 2025. It is a matter of immense joy and pride that young talents from even smaller districts of MP are making their mark at the national level." Originally from Jalgaon, Majid took admission in Macro Vision Academy in Burhanpur in 2023 after completing Class 10. His aunt has been teaching there for 25 years. "I was confident about the teaching here. That's why I shifted," he said. Majid's parents are academicians — his father, Mujahid Hussain, is a civil engineering professor, and his mother, Sakina Hussain, is an MBA professor at a private college in Jalgaon. The values of discipline and dedication were instilled in him early on, and despite limited weekly phone calls from the hostel, his parents continued to be his emotional pillars throughout the demanding preparation period. "I would study from 3pm to 9pm in the hostel after school, including doubt-solving sessions with our teachers," he said. While Majid toiled with laser-sharp focus, his family kept his father's serious health condition hidden from him. Mujahid Hussain was battling paralysis and has been wheelchair-bound for six months. "I only discovered the extent of his illness after the exam. It was heartbreaking, but later I understood their decision — it was to keep me focused," Majid said. His father, he added, laid the foundation of his understanding in mathematics and physics. Staying away from mobile phones and social media for two years, Majid had eyes locked on his target and scored a perfect 100 in two subjects in JEE-Advanced and after securing 99.992 percentile in JEE-Mains. His twin brother, Sajid, who is a minute elder, also cleared JEE Advanced with AIR 1625. Praising the young achiever, his school principal J S Parmar said, "Majid's determination sets him apart. He has made his family, his school, and all of us immensely proud." JEE Advanced results: Toppers say focus on studies and discipline were key to success

With the announcement of results Monday, the toppers of the JEE (Advanced) attributed their success to focus, discipline, and in some cases, keeping a safe distance from social media. For the 2025 topper, Rajit Gupta, a resident of Kota, focus, not missing classes, and keeping time for extracurricular activities, contributed to his success. 'I never missed my coaching classes and used to study for eight hours after classes. I kept solving previous years' question papers and always had time for extracurricular activities to keep my mind fresh,' Rajit said. He said he wants to join IIT Bombay and pursue Computer Science. Saksham Jindal, who ranked second in the common rank list, was once an under-14 district-level cricketer. He once had dreams of making it big in cricket. However, the Covid-19 pandemic altered his path. Lockdown kept him away from practice. It was during this time that Jindal developed an interest in mathematics and participated in the Olympiads. Saksham wants to take admission at IIT Bombay for a BTech in Computer Science Engineering. Born into a family of doctors – with mother Dr Anita Jindal, a physiotherapist, and father Umesh Jindal, a pathologist – Saksham went out of his family league to become an engineer. Sharing his preparation strategy, Saksham's father said, 'He tried his best to understand every chapter in depth and practice questions as many times as he could. This strengthened his confidence. For JEE Advanced, he relied on the NCERT syllabus and mock tests.'

Ujjain girl emerges zonal topper

Indore: Harshita Goyal, originally from Ujjain and currently residing in Indore, emerged as the Kanpur zone topper in the girls' category in the JEE Advanced 2025 results announced on Monday. With an All India Rank (AIR) of 434, Harshita also secured the top position among girls in Madhya Pradesh. Harshita moved to Indore in 2023 after Class 10 to pursue JEE coaching at a reputed institute. With a strong aspiration to enter the engineering field, she relocated to a hostel to focus on her studies. However, within a few months, she fell seriously ill, suffering from typhoid followed by pneumonia, which kept her away from studies for nearly one and a half months. Concerned about her health, her family decided that her 75-year-old maternal grandmother, Madhu Pandviya, would move to Indore to stay with her. Since early 2024, Harshita has been staying in Indore with her grandmother, while her mother, Meghna Goyal, continues to work as a private banker in Ujjain. Speaking about her success, Harshita said, "I expected a good result based on the answer keys, but I never imagined I would top the state. It was truly surprising." "Apart from my teachers at the coaching, my mother and grandmother kept me motivated throughout," said Harshita. Harshita believes in strengthening what she already knows before focusing on her weaker areas. Even during the final phase of exam preparation, she prioritised revising her strong subjects. Additionally, many other students from the city secured high ranks. Chirayu Jain from the city secured AIR 28, while Shantanu Patel secured AIR 174 in the general category and AIR 25 in the OBC category, followed by Atharv Airen with AIR 265. Over 2,100 students from the city appeared for the exam, which was held on May 18. More than 200 students from the city secured AIR ranks between 100 and 1,000 this year. TNN
