Sardor Mirzayusupovich Rustambaev, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to India, has said that his country shares a strong diplomatic partnership as well as deep cultural and historical ties with India.
In an interaction with the media in Kozhikode on Saturday (May 31, 2025), he described India as a 'strategic partner in many aspects. We were even under one empire once,' he remarked, emphasising the long-standing cultural ties and historical bond between India and Uzbekistan.
Mr. Rustambaev was in the city to inaugurate Mediklick Expo, organised by KlickEdu, which offered students an opportunity to directly interact with delegates and graduates from various foreign medical universities.
He said Uzbekistan offered Indian students high-quality and affordable medical education. 'Thousands of Indians are studying in Uzbekistan. They do not struggle and feel completely at home there,' he added.
'The people of Uzbekistan are very hospitable, and the weather is quite similar to that of Kerala,' Mr. Rustambaev said, adding that there was a threefold increase in the number of Indian students enrolled in Uzbekistan within just one year, rising from 3,500 to 10,000.
Delegates from several countries, including Poland, Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Tajikistan, took part in the expo.

Gandhi's Principles More Relevant Today Amid Cross-Border Terrorism: Ravi Shankar Prasad In U.K.

BJP Member of Parliament Ravi Shankar Prasad emphasized the continued relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence principles during a visit to London on Sunday, particularly in light of cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pakistan. Speaking as part of India's diplomatic outreach following the Pahalgam terrorist incident that resulted in 26 casualties, Prasad addressed the significance of Gandhi's teachings in contemporary times. The all-party delegation began their United Kingdom visit by offering floral tributes at the memorials of both Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, followed by addressing a large gathering at the Indian High Commission. At Gandhi's memorial in Tavistock Square, Prasad expressed pride in paying respects to the Mahatma in the heart of London, stating that Gandhi's principles of non-violence, truth, harmony, and goodwill hold even greater importance in today's era of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Former Minister M.J. Akbar provided historical context, referencing what he described as the first documented case of terrorism as state policy by Pakistan in October 1947, when thousands of terrorists were deployed to Kashmir. Akbar noted that while Gandhi advocated non-violence, he spoke forcefully against these raiders and terrorists, later telling a prayer meeting that Indian soldiers had a duty to defeat terrorism without retreat. The delegation also explored the Ambedkar Museum in north London, where Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi reflected on the constitutional architect's legacy. She highlighted the contrast between India's democratic progress since 1947 and Pakistan's ongoing struggles with governance, noting that while both nations gained independence simultaneously, India became a republic in 1950 while Pakistan continues to face military dominance over civilian government. At India House in London, hundreds of diaspora community leaders and members gathered, displaying national flags and chanting patriotic slogans. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami received the nine-member team, with Prasad assuring the community that India remains strong and capable of addressing Pakistani terrorism while urging them to spread India's message globally that terrorists must face consequences. The evening event, which opened with the Indian National Anthem, featured speeches from various delegation members representing different political parties. BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari emphasized their unity despite different party affiliations when it comes to national interests, while former Deputy National Security Adviser Pankaj Saran declared Operation Sindoor a complete success as per the Prime Minister's directive. High Commissioner Doraiswami stressed that terrorism should be treated as a global concern rather than an issue confined to India, calling for international recognition of this reality. The community gathering concluded with a private dinner meeting with the UK's shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel and her Conservative Party colleagues. The multi-party delegation, comprising representatives from various political parties including MPs Purandeswari, Chaturvedi, Ghulam Ali Khatana, Amar Singh, Samik Bhattacharya, M. Thambidurai, along with Akbar and Ambassador Saran, has planned multiple engagements with think tanks, parliamentarians, and diaspora leaders during their three-day UK visit ending Tuesday. Following their UK visit, the delegation will proceed to the European Union and Germany for similar discussions with parliamentarians, political leaders, and diaspora communities. This delegation represents one of seven multi-party groups India has deployed to visit 33 global capitals as part of an international outreach campaign highlighting Pakistan's connections to terrorism. The diplomatic mission follows escalated tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, which led to Indian precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during early May. Pakistan's subsequent attempts to target Indian military installations on consecutive days met with strong Indian responses, with hostilities eventually ceasing through dialogue between military operations directors from both nations on May 10.

PM Modi Likely To Inaugurate Kashmir Rail Link In June, Flag Off Vande Bharat From Katra

Last Updated: The Prime Minister will flag off the Vande Bharat train services from Katra town in the Jammu division to Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley in the coming days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the first-ever rail link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country by the end of the first week of June. The railway authorities are making the final preparations for this significant event. The Prime Minister will flag off the Vande Bharat train services from Katra town in the Jammu division to Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley in the coming days. Initially scheduled for April 19, the inauguration was postponed due to unfavourable weather conditions. The event was further delayed following a terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the death of 26 people. In response, Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6 and 7, targeting terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan attempting drone attacks in India, which were successfully thwarted by Indian forces. On May 10, Indian forces carried out strikes on 11 airbases in Pakistan, causing significant damage. Following these events, the Pakistan Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) reached out to his Indian counterpart, leading to a ceasefire agreement between the two countries. Katra-Srinagar Rail Link A Railways ministry official had told News18 in April that the journey between Katra and Srinagar takes about six to seven hours by road, while a flight takes less than one hour. 'Katra is well connected with almost all parts of the country. There are direct trains from various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kanyakumari. The new Vande Bharat between Katra and Srinagar will offer more comfortable journeys. Those planning to go to Kashmir can first reach Katra and then take the new Vande Bharat for the journey ahead," the official said. The completion of the Udhampur Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL) has enabled train movement between Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, trains operate between Srinagar and Sangaldan railway stations. With the completion of the section between Sangaldan and Katra, trains will now operate between these areas as well. The Prime Minister will inaugurate this section on Saturday. Trials have been conducted on this section for the past several weeks. The USBRL project was planned and announced in 1994-95. While the part in the Kashmir Valley—Qazigund to Baramulla—became operational by 2009, connectivity to the railway network beyond the Valley remained unfulfilled. With the completion of the Anji Khand Bridge and the Chenab Bridge, the Valley is now connected to the rest of the country by rail. Additional security measures are being planned at the Katra station compared to other stations. Talks are ongoing for proper security checks and thorough frisking of passengers for trains going to Kashmir, considering the area's sensitivity. Features Of The Specially Designed Vande Bharat In January, News18 had reported on the unique features of the train, which include heating elements in windshields, silicon heating pads in water and bio-toilet tanks, heated plumbing pipelines, and heaters in Indian toilets. These upgrades will allow the chair car trains to operate throughout the year, even in the harsh Kashmir winters. The eight-coach train has two classes—one Executive Class coach and seven AC Chair Car coaches. The special modifications to the Vande Bharat train were made due to the region's special weather conditions, where temperatures can drop below zero. 'Changes have been made in the Vande Bharat train as Srinagar and other parts of the Valley witness temperatures in the minus. This special train will allow train connectivity to the region even in the harshest weather," the official said. In summary, the inauguration of the Vande Bharat train service between Katra and the Kashmir Valley marks a significant milestone, providing a vital rail link and enhanced connectivity for the region.

BJP MP's scathing jibe at Pakistan in London: ‘Not here with begging bowl'

In a sharp jibe at Pakistan, BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya on Monday said that India is not seeking global favours but issuing a strong alert over the escalating threat of terrorism. His remarks came during a visit to London as part of multi-party parliamentary delegations being sent to several countries in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. Speaking at an event, Bhattacharya said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "We are not at the doors of anyone with a begging bowl... We are here to alert all that what is happening with us will happen to you tomorrow." Bhattacharya, who is currently in the UK as a member of the parliamentary delegation, also criticised the inconsistent approach of some nations. 'Countries change their stance to sell ammunition; they preach to us about dialogues. They say everything can be sorted out by interaction,' he said. Meanwhile, speaking at the Command and Staff College in Quetta on Saturday, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that countries now look to engage with Islamabad as equal partners in trade, investment, and innovation, rather than expecting it to come forward with a 'begging bowl'. Highlighting close ties with key allies, he said, 'China is the most time-tested friend of Pakistan. Saudi Arabia is one of the most reliable friends of Pakistan, and so are others such as Turkey, Qatar, and UAE.' Sharif talked about a shift in leadership mindset regarding economic dependency. 'I am the last person, along with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, willing to carry this burden any longer on my shoulders, because ultimately, it weighs on the shoulders of this great nation,' he said. The London visit is part of a broader diplomatic outreach launched by the Indian government following Operation Sindoor – a military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. The operation, initiated on May 7, targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, killing over 100 terrorists associated with groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The Indian delegation, led by senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes parliamentarians from various parties: Daggubati Purandeswari (TDP), Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena-UBT), Ghulam Ali Khatana (BJP), Dr. Amar Singh (Congress), Samik Bhattacharya (BJP), former Union Minister MJ Akbar, and Ambassador Pankaj Saran. The team arrived in London on Saturday after visiting France, Italy, and Denmark. In London, the delegation paid floral tributes at the Rabindranath Tagore statue at the Tagore Centre. Reflecting on the poet's legacy, Bhattacharya said, "Rabindranath was relevant during his lifetime and so is he today. He shall also remain relevant in the future." Speaking on India's diplomatic effort, Bhattacharya told ANI, 'Some nations in the world sometimes change their stand to either sell their weapons, establish their hegemony or interfere with the market, and take a stand which is against humanity.' This visit is part of seven planned international tours involving around 40 multi-party parliamentarians, marking the first time the Indian government is deputing MPs from across party lines to present India's position on Kashmir and cross-border terrorism. The aim is to reinforce India's zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and expose Pakistan's terror networks globally (With ANI inputs)
