Everton captain Coleman signs one-year contact extension
June 27 (Reuters) - Everton skipper Seamus Coleman has signed a one-year contract extension, saying on Friday that the chance to lead the club into their new stadium was a key reason to continue.
The 36-year-old Ireland international signed the deal just three days before his previous contract expired. He was forced off in the first half of Everton's final game at Goodison Park last month with a thigh injury but is expected to be fit in time for next season.
"Thanks to the hard work of many people, we've been able to get into our magnificent new stadium and pave the way for a brighter future under ambitious new owners (Friedkin Group), which I want to be part of," Coleman said in a statement.
Coleman joined the Merseyside club from Sligo Rovers in 2009 during David Moyes' first spell as manager. Moyes joined for a second spell in January, guiding Everton to a 13th-place finish.
"In David Moyes, we have the perfect manager to lead us into a new era. He showed his abilities once again with the way he had us playing after returning last season.
"As the man who brought me to Everton, I can't speak highly enough of him. He gets this football club, the standards required every day, and what it means to play for Everton."
Coleman holds the club record for most Premier League appearances (369) and is joint 12th on Everton's all-time list with 428 matches in all competitions, just five behind Dixie Dean and Leon Osman.
"This could be a period of real change at the Club and I want somebody who can help deliver the messages of what it means to be an Everton footballer. Seamus has always done that and I know he will continue to do so as we move into a new era," Moyes said.
Everton begin their league campaign away at Leeds United on Aug. 18.

Man Utd see second bid for Bryan Mbeumo rejected in fresh transfer saga twist
Manchester United submitted a second improved offer of £55million plus a further £7.5m in add-ons on Monday for Bryan Mbeumo, but have seen the offer for the forward rejected Manchester United's attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo have suffered a blow after Brentford rejected their second offer for the forward. United want to add Mbeumo to their squad after landing Matheus Cunha, but negotiations have been far from straightforward. Cunha joined United for £62.5million from Wolves earlier in June and the club quickly identified Mbeumo as the second player they wanted for their new-look attack. The Cameroon international scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season and has attracted interest from United, Tottenham, Newcastle and Arsenal. Mbeumo has his heart set on moving to Old Trafford and has told Brentford and his former manager, Thomas Frank, that he won't be joining him at Tottenham. Yet Ruben Amorim is still waiting to land the 25-year-old right winger, with the Bees playing hard ball. The Athletic says that United's improved bid of £55m and £7.5m of bonuses, which was submitted on Monday, has been rejected by Brentford. It followed an opening offer of £45m plus £10m. Brentford, naturally, want the bulk of the fee paid up front, while United would prefer to spread out the cost. While Tottenham made their interest known, they never submitted an official offer for Mbeumo. And the north London club are understood to have moved on after Mbeumo informed Frank personally of his preference to join United. United will continue negotiations with Brentford over Mbeumo and are still confident of getting a deal done. That confidence is based on the player's wishes and the fact that they don't need to sell their unwanted players to fund the move. HAVE YOUR SAY! Is Bryan Mbeumo the right player for Manchester United? Comment below. They are understood to be willing to offer Mbeumo between £150,000-£175,000-a-week, with bonuses taking that expected package to £200,000-a-week. He is under contract with the Bees until June 2026, but the club also have the option to extend it by a further 12 months. Mbeumo has been with Brentford since 2019, when he joined for £5.8m from French side Troyes. He has contributed 70 goals and 51 assists in 242 appearances for the club altogether and looks set to follow in the footsteps of Ivan Toney is leaving west London. Brentford have already banked £10m from Spurs in compensation for Frank and are braced for a summer of upheaval. They announced the appointment of Keith Andrews as Frank's replacement on Friday, but look set to lose Mbeumo and captain Christian Norgaard, who is the subject of a £9.3m bid from Arsenal. United are rebuilding their squad under Amorim and are attempting to sell Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho, among others. Rashford has his heart set on Barcelona, Garnacho has been linked with Chelsea and Napoli and Sancho has reportedly agreed to join Fenerbahce. Bryan Mbeumo sends message to Thomas Frank as second Man Utd bid is rejected
Manchester United have seen a second bid for Bryan Mbeumo rejected but the Brentford star remains determined to move to Old Trafford this summer. Having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, United have made Mbeumo a top target for Ruben Amorim's new-look attack next season. An opening offer of £45million plus £10m in add-ons was rejected by the Bees with The Athletic reporting a second proposal of £55m plus £7.5m in bonuses has also been turned away. Talks are continuing however with belief a compromise can be found. Mbeumo, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season, has also attracted interest from Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham with it quickly emerging the Cameroon international favours a move to Old Trafford. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. The appointment of Thomas Frank as new Tottenham boss threatened to derail United's efforts amid hopes the forward would be tempted by a reunion with his former Brentford boss in north London. However, Mbeumo has now informed Frank and Brentford that if he is to leave the Gtech Stadium this summer, it will only be to join United. The report adds Spurs have denied making any offer for the player at this stage. United struggled badly in front of goal last season with only Everton and the three relegated sides scoring less than them. Cunha and Mbeumo hit 35 between them in the league campaign – just nine short of United's total tally of 44. Adding goals has been a priority but changes could also be made in goal following another poor season for Andre Onana. Marco Carnesecchi of Atalanta and Diogo Costa of Porto have been strongly linked with moves to Old Trafford along with Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez. More Trending Martinez is expected to leave Villa Park this summer with former United defender Gary Pallister believing signing him should be a 'no brainer' for his old side. 'Andre Onana has been under a lot of pressure,' he told Metro on behalf of Gamble Online. 'He went through a period last season where he was very good but then he started making some high-profile mistakes. 'Emi Martinez is the real deal in terms of his goalkeeping ability and his personality, he's a very strong character. 'He's brave and is everything you'd want to see in a Premier League goalkeeper. If you were able to get your hands on him, then I think that's possibly a no-brainer.'

Rob Key never doubted Jofra Archer's desire to return to Test cricket
Stress fractures in his right elbow and lower back have conspired to keep Archer on 13 Test caps since February 2021 and repeated setbacks could have seen him throw in his lot on the franchise circuit. Key, England's managing director of men's cricket, suspects Archer would have been in high demand and the prospect is attractive because of a much lighter workload, required to bowl only four overs a game. Archer has a deal with Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, where he broke his thumb this year to derail hopes of a much-anticipated Test return for England at the start of the summer. But Key was always certain Archer, who is in England's squad for the second Test against India, was destined to play red-ball cricket again and argued he could now establish himself as an all-time great. 'Jofra has always been adamant that he's wanted to play Test cricket,' said Key, speaking at a Rothesay media event in London. 'He's had probably more so than anyone in the game… he could have been tempted to go down other routes and he's never once done it. I've always had faith in Jofra. 'He could be one of the best bowlers we've had – and you only do that in Test cricket. Hopefully for the next few years, we'll be fortunate to see Jofra have a chance to stake that claim.' Key was coy about whether Archer would play at Edgbaston next week or in the third Test at Lord's, starting in a fortnight, having only bowled 18 overs in his first first-class match in four years. Archer bowled economically and at high pace in taking one for 32 at Durham this week but his coach at Sussex, Paul Farbrace, an ex-England assistant, believes the paceman needs more time in county cricket. Jofra Archer is 𝑩𝑨𝑪𝑲 🔥 Our squad to take on India in the second Test has just dropped 📋👇 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 26, 2025 England, though, have painstakingly managed Archer to the brink of a Test comeback in the last couple of years, all thanks to the efforts of doctors, physios and especially fast bowling coach Neil Killeen. Captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum will also be mindful of overloading Archer, whose initial injury woes were blamed on him bowling 42 overs in a Test against New Zealand in late 2019. 'The temptation at times with Jofra is that he can do a bit of everything but you've got to use him when he can impact the game,' said Key. 'Jofra's been on a long period where he's been building up and building up. I think we've gone slower than we could have done, the temptation would have been to rush him and to bring him back sooner. 'But we've gone down this road to make sure that we're in this position now where we think he'll be able to play. We've picked him in the squad and we'll see how the conditions are (at Edgbaston). 'We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.' Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue were the three frontline seamers, alongside captain Ben Stokes, to help England secure a five-wicket win over India and go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Jamie Overton and Sam Cook are also pushing for Test call-ups while Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood are optimistic of being involved at some point against Shubman Gill's tourists. 'There was a time where you thought it was all about Wood and Archer and we needed that X-factor pace – but now we've got a few of them,' added Key. 'Jofra is another piece in that puzzle. 'We don't know who's the next great England opening partnership because there's a number of those options that could be the mainstay of England bowlers for years. I can't wait to see who that will be.'
