Actors with Down syndrome tear down barriers in London show
LONDON - It is one of English playwright William Shakespeare's most existential questions 'to be or not to be?'. Now a group of globe-trotting Peruvian actors with Down syndrome are tackling it head-on, breaking down prejudice and barriers.
Cristina Leon, Jaime Cruz and Manuel Garcia are members of the eight-strong group currently performing Shakespeare's Hamlet at the Barbican Centre in London from April 24 to 27.
'This play shows that we can be included in everything at work, and in education,' Leon, 32, told AFP. 'There are no barriers, we can do lots of things, and people must open their eyes to the fact that we can do anything they ask us.'
The project was launched seven years ago born out of Cruz's dreams of becoming an actor.
He was working as an usher in the Teatro La Plaza in Lima and had never thought that his Down syndrome was an obstacle in life.
'I have always wanted to be an actor,' the 30-year-old said. 'One day there was an event (at the Lima theatre) in which you had to introduce yourself, and I said my name and said I was an actor.'
He added that he wanted to overcome 'prejudices, myths and barriers'.
His words inspired the theatre's artistic director Chela de Ferrari, who has now adapted the play for the eight actors and brought it to the land of Shakespeare's birth.
'He really caught by attention, and I thought to myself I really need to have a more in-depth discussion with him,' she told AFP.
'We went to a cafe, and while we were talking I had a vision of him wearing the prince's crown and I thought about the meaning that Jaime could bring to Hamlet's famous words 'to be or not to be',' she said.
'Form of resistance'
A casting session was organised and seven other actors were chosen for the group.
'Jaime made me face my own prejudices, my deep ignorance about the reality,' de Ferrari said. 'I think what the public experiences mirrors exactly what happened to me.'
Three years ago, the group was invited to visit Spain, and since then they have toured the world.
The show had a sold-out run at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2024, with The Guardian praising the cast's interpretation of the normally depressing tale of the Danish prince as 'upbeat', adding it 'oozes charm, humour and imagination'.
'I don't think it's the only play with actors with Down syndrome, but I don't think other groups have travelled as much,' de Ferrari said.
In 2025, the group of five men and three women will also be performing in Brighton in southern England as well as 35 other towns and cities, including Seoul in South Korea, Melbourne in Australia, Toronto in Canada, and New York and Chicago in the United States.
They act in Spanish with sub-titles in other languages for local non-Spanish speaking audiences.
'In today's society everyone puts up limits. They tell us all the time that we cannot do things,' said Garcia, 32.
'With what we are seeing in the world, attacks on certain values such as diversity, it's a good moment to present these projects. It's also a form of resistance,' added de Ferrari.
'Instead of rejecting people who have speech problems or stutter, we embrace this diversity,' she said proudly. AFP

SailGP rides rising tide with celebrity owners, brands
FILE PHOTO: SailGP F50 team Canada competes in front of the Statue of Liberty after the start of the finals race during the SailGP sailboat racing event won by team New Zealand in New York Harbor, New York City, U.S. June 23, 2024. REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo NEW YORK - With new celebrity owners and a bevy of fresh sponsors, SailGP hopes to harness a wave of popularity and take the global sailing championship to the next level as it steers back to New York City to race for a third time this weekend. SailGP announced actors Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds as new owners of Australia's three-time champion team on Thursday, just as the ink was drying on the team's first title sponsor deal with BONDS. Reynolds led beleaguered soccer side Wrexham out of obscurity and into the English second-tier Championship with an injection of marketing wizardry, cash and a popular docu-series that quickly converted legions of American fans. SailGP is hoping for their Wrexham moment, too. "The fact that we can get that sort of involvement in one of the teams is amazing, and they'll have some fun with it too, which is what it's all about," Russell Coutts, the former Olympic champion who co-founded the league, told Reuters. It was the kind of news to which fans have become accustomed, as the operation co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison catches fire with A-listers and snares more big-name brands six years after its launch. Oscar winner Anne Hathaway joined a female-led consortium that acquired the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team last week, while the competition itself named Rolex its title sponsor in November. More than 200,000 ticketholders watched SailGP events last year, as the league reported strong growth in social media engagement, snaring younger fans. The competition expanded to 12 teams for season five, with the addition of Brazil and Italy, and announced its new docuseries last month, part of a new content development push. "We had so many sort of naysayers out there saying this is like another sailing league, it'll be gone in two years, people have tried this and done it before, it never works and SailGP has totally broken down those boundaries," said Tom Slingsby, the CEO and driver for the Australian team. The 2012 Olympic gold medallist, whose team was rebranded as the BONDS Flying Roos, said he could not have imagined five years ago his team signing an iconic brand like BONDS, as they mull potential documentary options with Jackman and Reynolds. "I would have said that's not possible. There's no chance," he said. "But here we are." The leaders in the SailGP standings are not the only winners in the sponsorship race: On Monday, the U.S. SailGP team announced Amazon has signed on as a sponsor, joining existing brands like Tommy Hilfiger and T-Mobile. "You're starting to see really big brands come in and spend money in our sport," said Mike Buckley, the CEO and strategist for the U.S. SailGP team. "We're on everybody's radar now." Buckley put his money where his mouth is in 2023, helping lead a group of investors in the purchase of the U.S. team, locking in early for the league that hopes to become the "F1 of sailing". "Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts had a vision to build a TV product that the average racing fan would spend 90 minutes paying attention to," he said. "And I think they've done just that." The New York Sail Grand Prix is set for June 7-8. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Actor Tom Felton to reprise Draco Malfoy role in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child on Broadway
Actor Tom Felton to reprise Draco Malfoy role in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child on Broadway NEW YORK – Tom Felton, who rose to fame as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise (2001 to 2011), is reprising his role as the titular boy wizard's blond arch-nemesis on Broadway for a limited engagement beginning in November. The English actor will make his Broadway debut with his turn in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child –his first return to the character in 15 years – and will be in the show through March, according to a statement. Felton, 37, said in a statement on June 6 that being part of the Harry Potter films had been one of the greatest honours of his life. 'Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play,' he said. 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and, of course, his iconic platinum blond hair. I am thrilled to be able to see his story through an d share it with the greatest fan community in the world.' Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, written by Jack Thorne from an original story by Thorne, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany, debuted in 2016 in London's West End. Set 19 years after the events of Rowling's book Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows (2007), Draco is now a father, and he – along with grown-up Harry, Ron and Hermione – sends his child to Hogwarts. Alexis Soloski wrote in a 2021 review for The New York Times that after the Covid-19 pandemic forced the show to close, it returned with a shorter, streamlined story. The play, she wrote, remained 'diamond-sharp in its staging and dazzling in its visual imagination, as magical as any spell or potion'. The show's producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, said in a joint statement that Draco left an indelible impression on Harry Potter fans around the world, and Felton's return to the franchise would offer fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see him again. 'This moment is powerful on many levels,' they said, adding that the moment was charged with nostalgia, evolution and emotion. 'Tom's return to Hogwarts bridges generations of fans and breathes new life into a beloved story.' Since appearing in the Harry Potter films, Felton has acted in the movies Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011) and A Babysitter's Guide To Monster Hunting (2020). In 2022, he released a memoir, Beyond The Wand , and made his West End debu t a s the star of 2:22 A Ghost Story (2021).
