‘Elusive' feline with ‘unusually large' teeth appears on trail camera in India. See it
In a national park near India's easternmost border, an 'elusive' feline with 'unusually large' teeth stalked through the dark forest, its large, fluffy tail swishing behind it. Its movement triggered a nearby trail camera.
The resulting photo turned out to be a 'rare sighting.'
'Exciting conservation news!!,' Chandra Mohan Patowary, the state of Assam's minister for environment and forests, said in a Feb. 27 Facebook post. 'Our camera trap inside Dehing Patkai National Park just captured a rare sighting of (an) elusive marbled cat.'
Marbled cats, scientifically known as Pardofelis marmorata, are a small species of wild cat found across southeast Asia, according to the Thai National Parks department. They are roughly the size of domestic cats but have 'long' tails and 'unusually large canine teeth' that resemble the teeth of big cats.
A trail camera photo taken in late 2024 shows the marbled cat walking through a clearing. Its fur appears yellowy brown and has a spotted pattern similar to other better-known big cats.
'We are thrilled to share that our camera traps, set up across various areas of Dehing Patkai National Park and reserve forest, have recorded 2-3 marbled cats,' said local wildlife ranger T.C. Ranjit Ram, according to the Times of India.
Very little is known about marbled cats because of their nocturnal, tree-dwelling lifestyles. The species is considered vulnerable and at-risk with 'fewer than 10,000 mature' cats in the wild, wildlife officials said.
In late 2023, Dehing Patkai National Park began an 'extensive' project to study five species of small wild cat, including the marbled cat, the Indian news outlet Mongabay reported at the time. The project was expected to last about a year and involve 95 trail cameras at various locations in the park.
Ram told the Times of India in a Feb. 28 article that the park's trail camera project 'yielded significant results, and we are optimistic about further discoveries.'
Dehing Patkai National Park is in the state of Assam in northeastern India, near the border with Myanmar and a disputed border with China.

Food blog Chowhound claimed in the initial version of an article titled "How Your Costco Card Could Save You At The Airport," that people's Costco cards could pass through TSA because it is considered a photo ID. The article cited Reddit, where users claimed their warehouse club cards helped them through airport security when they forgot or lost their regular ID. On June 4, the day TSA debunked the rumor on social media, Chowhound issued an update to the article, saying, "A previous version of this article stated TSA is likely to accept a Costco membership card in lieu of a valid form of ID. TSA does not explicitly state you can use a Costco card as a form of identification, explaining, 'The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name and current address to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening.'" The update concludes with: "Now with the Real ID requirements, (a Costco card) is even less likely to get you through TSA quickly or successfully." If someone tried using a Costco card at an airport, they would likely be pulled from the TSA checkpoint line for further questioning about other personal information, such as their two previous home addresses, Dankers told SFGate. Plane returns to Heathrow due to windscreen crack
A passenger plane from Heathrow to Detroit had to return to the London airport due to a cracked windscreen. Delta Air Lines flight 017 was carrying 188 passengers and 12 crew on board when the pilot reported the fault shortly after taking off at 11:44 BST on Saturday morning. The crew followed procedure by returning to London Heathrow, where the plane landed safely a short time later, the airline said. Some customers were re-booked onto flights later today and those who could not be offered flights until tomorrow were offered meals and hotel rooms, Delta Air Lines said. Costco Members Cautioned Against Using Their Membership Card—Don't Use It As a REAL ID
Costco is a popular big-box membership warehouse club, offering discounted prices on brand-name merchandise in bulk and non-bulk sizes. Costco is actually the third-largest retailer in the world, only behind Walmart and Amazon, and is a Fortune 500 company. "With hundreds of locations worldwide, Costco provides a wide selection of merchandise, plus the convenience of specialty departments and exclusive member services, all designed to make your shopping experience a pleasurable one," the company states on their website. To shop at Costco, members have to own a membership card. The Costco "Gold Star Membership" card includes two card and the ability to shop online and in warehouses. For those who want to up their game, the Costco "Executive Membership" package also includes an annual 2% reward and Costco services discounts. But, Costco customers are being told not to use their membership card for one specific thing. The TSA is showing their frustration with travelers who are not showing them a REAL ID to take a flight, and they don't want passengers to think that their Costco card counts as a proper REAL ID. "In a Facebook post shared on June 4, the TSA stated a Costco membership card is not, in any way, an acceptable form of identification to get on a plane. Yes, people are actually trying to use their Costco cards to get on aiplanes. 'We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person," the TSA stated in their post, "but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not." Beginning May 7, the majority of adult citizens taking a flight in the U.S. must show either a passport or upgraded identification card that meets federal REAL ID standards.
