EPS kicks off annual Project TENSOR traffic initiative for 2025
Edmonton drivers better keep an eye on the speed limit, because city police have launched their annual Project TENSOR (traffic enforcement noise/speed offence reductions) traffic initiative for summer 2025.
Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said in a Friday news release that Project TENSOR targets drivers violating up to 10 different types of offences, including speeding, causing noise disturbances, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving a motorcycle without a helmet.
'Traffic issues, especially noise and speeding, continue to generate the bulk of the complaints received by traffic section from the general public,' said Sgt. Kerry Bates with the EPS traffic safety unit.
'We certainly understand the public's frustration with these issues and developed Project TENSOR as an ongoing initiative to address these concerns through enforcement and education.'
EPS deployed the first wave of enforcement on May 23, which resulted in 169 violations, including 21 hazardous movement violations, 27 speeding violations, and 73 non-hazardous violations such as driving in a bus lane.
You can find more information about Project Tensor on the EPS Traffic & Vehicles page.

Searcher says no sign of missing N.S. children as renewed search enters second day
LANSDOWNE STATION - The head of the search-and-rescue team looking for signs of two young children who went missing in rural Nova Scotia a month ago says searchers have not found any new evidence as of this afternoon. The search for four-year-old Jack Sullivan and his six-year-old sister Lilly Sullivan, who were reported missing from their home in Lansdowne Station on May 2, resumed this weekend for two days of targeted searching. Amy Hansen, Colchester County ground search-and-rescue manager, says this weekend's renewed search is focused on the Gairloch Road area — near where the children lived — and along a nearby 'pipeline trail,' where a small boot print was previously found. Hansen says the team of searchers are working hard to move through the rough and densely wooded terrain that's packed with thick brush and downed trees from post-tropical storm Fiona, which hit the region in 2022. The search manager says the challenging terrain means grid searching is time consuming, and as of about 2 p.m. Sunday, searchers had not found any signs of the children. The initial, large-scale search-and-rescue effort was scaled back May 7, and the search this weekend marks the second time ground search teams have been asked to return to focus on specific areas. When the first search ended on May 7, RCMP said they did not expect to find the children alive in the surrounding woods. But they said searching would resume if they received fresh information. Wildfires have forced thousands to flee communities across parts of Canada — see photos of the 'challenging' emergency
Wildfires have been burning out of control in parts of Canada, threatening several communities and forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes. The conditions are so severe that Manitoba and Saskatchewan have declared states of emergency. According to Environment Canada's data on May 30, "extreme" conditions — the highest level — are also being seen in parts of Alberta, northeastern British Columbia, the southern parts of the territories and western Ontario. The poor conditions are also posing a threat to northern states in the U.S.; North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and states around the Great Lakes are expected to get the highest smoke concentrations over the next few days. "As we head into the weekend, pray for rain," Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said at a Friday press conference. "We haven't seen rain in the forecast yet. That could really help — sustained rainfall, in particular. But in the absence of that, the past few days have been very challenging, and that may continue." When Kinew ordered a provincewide state of emergency on Wednesday, telling reporters this is "the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people's living memory." The press conference came after roughly 17,000 residents were evacuated from the affected areas. That includes the entire town of Flin Flon, an area of around 5,000 residents. "The only folks remaining on the ground are firefighters and folks in the office of the fire commissioner and RCMP, who are there to battle the blaze," Kinew said Friday. "We do expect some very, very challenging conditions in Flin Flon and in the surrounding community." Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe declared a state of emergency Thursday: "It's a very serious situation that we're faced with," he said at a Prince Albert press conference, adding the province also needs to see some rain. Thousands have already evacuated their homes in the province. Below, see some of the most eye-widening photos from the incident that's ravaging parts of Western and Central Canada.
