Mohali: Punjab local government minister Dr Ravjot Singh announced the elevation of Zirakpur municipal council as municipal corporation. The minister, who made the announcement during a surprise visit on early Thursday morning, also ordered an immediate civic clean-up and improvement drive in the town.
Dr Ravjot emphasized that the rapid urban expansion of Zirakpur requires a larger, more empowered civic body to ensure effective governance, improved sanitation, reliable water supply, and systematic urban planning. He urged MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa to submit a formal proposal through the municipal council to initiate the official upgrade process, which will take effect from the upcoming municipal corporation elections.
The minister expressed serious concern over the poor condition of civic infrastructure, particularly highlighting the choked Sukhna Choe, and directed officials to take swift action before the monsoon. He instructed the drainage department to assist the municipal council in clearing the choe and warned residents against dumping waste that could block water flow and cause flooding.
As part of the city's infrastructure upgrade, the minister confirmed the installation of two sewage treatment plants (STPs) — one of 47 MLD capacity at Sanauli, where land has already been handed over to the Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and another 37 MLD plant, for which land identification is currently underway.
Additionally, a high-level bridge costing Rs 5.96 crore has been proposed on the Sukhna Choe at Baltana to manage seasonal overflows.
During his visit, Dr Singh inspected several areas, including Baltana Furniture Market, Old Kalka Road, and Dhakauli, where he instructed local officials to deploy additional manpower to ensure citywide cleanliness. "The deteriorating condition of roads and public spaces is unacceptable," he said, adding that Zirakpur must reflect the aspirations of its fast-growing population.
When MLA Randhawa raised the issue of stormwater discharge from Panchkula causing flooding in Peer Muchhalla, the minister directed top officials in the local government department to coordinate with authorities from the neighbouring state for a swift resolution.
Dr Singh said, "As per the directions of chief minister, we are focused on ensuring that basic civic amenities are delivered efficiently. Accountability will be fixed in case of any negligence by local officers."
The minister concluded by promising traffic reforms and better urban planning to decongest Zirakpur's roads and enhance quality of life for its residents.

Delhi classroom 'scam': ED raids 37 locations in capital; focus on AAP-era construction costs

NEW DELHI: Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted raids at multiple locations across Delhi as part of a money laundering investigation linked to the alleged 'classrooms scam' involving senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and former ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain , according to news agency PTI. ED officials are reportedly searching at least 37 premises belonging to contractors and private entities involved in the case. It remains unclear whether any other politicians are among those targeted in the raids. ED launched the searches following the registration of a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), based on a Delhi Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) FIR. The case, registered in an FIR filed on April 30, alleges financial irregularities amounting to Rs 2,000 crore in the construction of over 12,000 classrooms and semi-permanent structures in Delhi government schools during the AAP-led government.

Drop fresh caste survey plan, Siroya tells Congress govt in Karnataka

BENGALURU: BJP MP Lahar Singh Siroya has said that the Congress government in the state should drop its plan to conduct a new caste survey and wait for the Union Government's census data. After discarding the survey conducted 10 years ago by spending nearly Rs 200 crore, the ruling Congress has decided to hold the new survey, he said. Apart from wasting public money, the new survey will lead to chaos. There will be two data -- one from old and another from the new survey. People may raise objections after comparing them. Each community will choose the survey that suits it the best. Thus, the very purpose of the survey would be lost, he said. The Union government will also release its census data later. All three surveys will have different data. The state government can help ensure social justice only by dropping its new survey plan, Siroya said.

Bhopal Bridge With 90-Degree Turn To Be Redesigned After Memes Go Viral

Bhopal: A rail overbridge that presented a disaster in waiting in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal will be redesigned, the authorities have said. A 90-degree L-shaped turn on one section of the bridge drew attention over the design flaw. Any motorist approaching that turn even at a slow speed would find it challenging to take the turn. A high- to moderate-speed turn would be impossible, or lead to an accident. Following criticism from experts, the rail overbridge will be redesigned by expanding the turn by three feet, which would enable a more rounded approach. Visuals of the rail overbridge had gone viral on social media, with many calling the design "ridiculous" and inherently dangerous. The railway department has given permission to expand the bridge, the authorities have said. The correct design will be achieved by removing dividers and adding more width. Built at a cost of Rs 18 crore, the bridge made headlines due to its 90-degree L-shaped turn, which locals called a "statue of confusion." At 648 meters in length and 8.5 meters in width, the bridge looked more like a scribble from a government notepad than a product of a civil engineering blueprint, people pointed out on social media. Congress spokesperson Abhinav Barolia said the "looks like something out of a video game, extremely dangerous." Locals, too, had voiced safety concerns. "I was passing by here, then I wanted to see the bridge. This bridge has three sharp turns that are extremely dangerous. There's a 100 per cent chance of accidents happening here. The bridge is good, but turning is not good at all. Mostly, accidents can happen here. Breakers and turns are quite dangerous. There should be more space here, too," local resident Nida Khan said. The construction began in March 2023 and was slated to be completed in 18 months. However, the project has taken over 36 months due to delays, including the shifting of electrical lines and coordination issues between the Public Works Department and the railways. Despite its intended purpose of reducing travel time and easing traffic in the Aishbagh area, the bridge became a subject of public concern due to its design and construction delays.
