‘Any loss of life is one too many': Portland police chief reflects on March violence
PORTLAND, Ore. () — A total of seven Portlanders died by homicide across the city during the month of March.
Portland Police Chief Bob Day is reflecting on a violent month in his city. He said during a news conference Friday that while there isn't much of a trend in these instances, the numbers are still 'saddening.'

The first two shootings happened on March 3 — one on and one on . The third shooting the next day, also on Northeast Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, took the life of 31-year-old Shaud'e Leigh Hutchinson.
A shooting on March 9th on Burnside took the life of a father of three.
Another deadly shooting happened on . Seventeen-year-old in a shooting the next day on Southeast 136th Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard.
Then Friday morning, police found a man dead after being stabbed at a hotel on Airport Way.
Hwy 26's 'The Bump' sends cars airborne
PPB Chief Bob Day said during a news conference Friday he worries about violence in the city as we approach spring break and warmer weather.
'I will be directing all of our resources in that regard to continue that have a heavy emphasis on outreach, community partnership and enforcement,' said Chief Day.
Chief Day also said it's no secret the bureau faces several challenges, including the ongoing staffing constraints and building relationships with marginalized communities. He also touched on the constant potential for less money pumping into the bureau.
'I certainly feel responsible to make sure people are aware of that, that any reduction in funding is going to be a reduction of services, which could potentially lead to an increase in crime. And we need to recognize that we need to be proud of the work we've done to stay committed to that. And there may come a period of time in the future where we can make those adjustments,' Chief Day said.
Chief Day told KOIN 6 they've made two arrests out of the now seven homicides this month. But he said they're still looking for anyone with any information about these cases.

Portland man who shot at 3 officers in 2021 receives 25-year sentence
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Tuesday after a December 2021 The incident began in the Lents neighborhood on Dec. 11, 2021 with fleeing from the police after an attempted traffic stop. Police used a Pursuit Intervention Technique, and Degerness crashed into a nearby tree. He was uncooperative with demands from officers and proceeded to fire at least two shots at officers from inside his car. The police officers sustained no injuries, and shot Degerness nonfatally. Degerness was indicted by a grand jury in 2021. He was convicted last month and was sentenced Tuesday by Multnomah County Circuit Judge Jenna Plank. In addition to his three first-degree murder charges, he was also charged with attempted assault, unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and felony attempt to allude. Bob Day, Portland Police Chief, expressed satisfaction at seeing Degerness brought to justice. 'Today's sentencing brings closure to a dangerous incident in which an individual eluded police and then fired at PPB members, putting their lives and the community at risk,' Day said. PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Two more asylum seekers were arrested at the Portland Immigration Courthouse on Tuesday morning, making it a total of four people detained by ICE in June. Man pleads guilty to string of armed robberies at Portland weed dispensaries
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man faces a possible sentencing of at least 20 years after he admitted to a string of armed robberies at five dispensaries and a bar. Cory Jackson, 44, pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree robbery with a firearm in a Multnomah County court on Tuesday. He also faces charges in Washington and Clackamas counties. Portland police said the Vancouver Police Department had notified them that Jackson was driving into Oregon from Washington.
