Partially Sunk North Korean Frigate Recovery Effort Seen Underway In Satellite Image
A day after an embarrassing mishap during a launch ceremony attended by dictator Kim Jong Un, North Korean authorities are trying to right the 5,000-ton frigate. The warship rolled over and partially submerged after a premature slide into the water at the Chongjin Shipyard. You can read more about the incident that Kim called 'a criminal act' in our initial coverage here.
New satellite imagery obtained by The War Zone shows the unnamed vessel, the second in the Choi Hyun class of frigates, still covered with blue tarps, but now there are two steel cables connecting it to a shipyard dock.
'The cables are likely for temporary mooring, tensioning, and stabilizing in order to prevent further movement or rotation and ensure structural safety.' Jennifer Jun, Associate Fellow for Imagery Analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) told us. 'North Korea mentioned that they need to pump up seawater from the flooded chamber, which will change the balance of the vessel as well and requires some sort of stabilizing support. You can read all about the heavily armed class of frigates in our previous detailed analysis and follow-up report.
'Experts estimated that it will take two or three days to keep the balance of the warship by pumping up the seawater from the flooded chamber and making the bow leave the slipway and 10-odd days to restore the warship's side,' the official North Korean KCNA News Agency reported on Friday.
North Korean officials also expressed optimism about the ship's condition.
'Detailed underwater and internal inspection of the warship confirmed that, unlike the initial announcement, there were no holes made at the warship's bottom, the hull starboard was scratched and a certain amount of seawater flowed into the stern section through the rescue channel,' the officials claimed. 'The extent of damage to the warship is not serious and the result of the flooding process immediately after the accident is only information necessary to take practical rehabilitation measures. The above-said data have no connection with the cause of the accident and the identification of its responsibility.'

The War Zone cannot independently verify North Korea's claims about the ship's condition, though it is not surprising that they would try to downplay the damage. A Washington-based think tank that closely follows North Korean shipbuilding questioned Pyongyang's stated timeline for recovery.
While 'too early to say definitively without being on the ground…I do have some skepticism about the 10-day period estimate, given that the vessel is heavily tilted and partially submerged,' Jennifer Jun, an Associate Fellow for Imagery Analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), told us. 'We also know that the vessel has been partially flooded, and the slipway infrastructure was likely damaged. Even if North Korea manages to right the vessel within the '10-odd days,' restoring its original capabilities will almost certainly take longer. I'd also be remiss not to mention that given the political stakes, those responsible for reporting this to Kim have strong incentives to downplay the extent of the damage.'
As we noted in our previous coverage, the accident unfolded as the frigate was side-launched from its quay, in a new development for North Korea, which has previously used slipways to put large naval vessels into the water stern-first. Beyond Parallel, a project within CSIS, offered a detailed analysis of what could have happened, based on satellite imagery collected May 22. You can read more about that here.
Jun on Friday told us that the new imagery does not change CSIS's assessment of what caused the ship to capsize.
'The new images from Maxar and Planet from today do not change our analysis at this point,' she explained. 'We see the recovery operation still underway, with more (small) support vessels employed to support it. The stern is still in the water and the vessel does not seem to have moved since yesterday's image.'
In addition to downplaying the extent of the damage, North Korean officials also said an investigation was underway into what happened.
'The Party Central Military Commission instructed the investigation group to investigate and expose the cause of the accident which should never occur and could not be tolerated and those responsible for it,' KCNA News Agency reported on Friday. 'No matter how good the state of the warship is, the fact that the accident is an unpardonable criminal act remains unchanged, and those responsible for it can never evade their responsibility for the crime. Regarding this accident as a serious matter is not because of the damage to the warship or economic loss. The aim of doing so is to deal a telling blow to incautiousness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricist attitude prevailing in any field and to sound an alarm bell.'
As part of the investigation, Hong Kil Ho, manager of the Chongjin Shipyard, 'was summoned to the law-enforcement organ on May 22.'

After the incident, North Korea made the highly unusual move of announcing what happened, including comments from Kim, in an apparent effort to control the narrative.
'Kim Jong Un made [a] stern assessment, saying that it was a serious accident and criminal act caused by absolute carelessness, irresponsibility … and could not be tolerated,' KCNA reported yesterday.
Kim said that the officials found responsible would be 'dealt with at the plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee' in June. This is a high-level meeting of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party.
At the same time, Kim called for the frigate to be restored before next month's meeting.
As with the North Korean assessment about the timeline for the ship's recovery, that claim is extremely dubious given that repairs are likely to be extensive.
With the ready availability of satellite imagery, it will be hard for North Korea to hide the material state of the vessel, as well as the progress of the recovery and restoration efforts, even with the bizarre attempt to use blue tarps to cover it up. We will continue to keep a close eye on the developments.

Trump-backed bill could block Tennessee's AI laws, threaten deepfake protections
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — President Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' could change the way Tennessee regulates artificial intelligence. New language added to the legislation would block states from regulating AI or risk losing federal broadband funding. That means state laws like the Elvis Act, which protects artists from having their voices or images stolen by AI, would be put on pause. 'We are just hoping that we're not taking a couple steps backward since there's no federal regulation currently in place,' Kaley Bonett, a Nashville entertainment lawyer at Hall Booth Smith, said. MAY: House Republicans include a 10-year ban on US states regulating AI in 'big, beautiful' bill 'The songwriters — all — are entitled to revenue generated from the performances and distribution of that particular sound recording of their song, so if there's a deepfake imposing and competing with the authentic, then it's going to affect where the revenue share goes,' a Nashville managing partner and shareholder for Hall Booth Smith, Karl Braun, explained. 'It's going to be very difficult for, let's say, a songwriter to protect themselves legally from this evolving kind of internet Wild, wild west.' 'The big beautiful bill that the president is advancing does not replace those regulations with anything, which is almost unprecedented,' Plaintiffs Attorney at Spragens Law, David Kieley, said. Also at risk is the 'Preventing Deep Fakes Images Act,' which makes it a felony to post fake AI images designed to harm someone's reputation. Nashville-based meteorologist Bree Smith was targeted by AI imagery herself, explaining that someone used AI to take her face and put it on someone else's semi-naked body. '[This bill] just means that we are saying for 10 years we are going to let people potentially be victimized in this way, and that can't happen,' Smith said. 'It's not going to be any more okay for something like that to happen 10 years from now than it is for it to happen today.' 'Even looking prospectively at things we haven't really encountered yet, but this would stop the state from being able to regulate things like driverless cars in your town, driverless 18-wheelers on Tennessee highways,' Kieley added. 'We don't know really how this technology could affect public safety things like 9-1-1, dispatch.' A law signed just last week by Governor Lee banning AI-generated child sexual abuse material could also be blocked. ⏩ 'It would put child sex predators and big tech over the safety of our families,' Sen. Heidi Campbell (D-Nashville) said. 'This is really antithetical to the values that people across the aisle in Tennessee have been communicating with our legislation.' The president's bill passed in the House of Representatives. It's now in the Senate, where supporters hope to finalize it by July. Senator Marsha Blackburn has previously stated that Tennessee needs AI safeguards, saying, 'Until we pass something that is federally preemptive, we can't call for a moratorium on those things.' New token soars 1,300% after Elon Musk tells America to 'Kill the Bill'
New token soars 1,300% after Elon Musk tells America to 'Kill the Bill' originally appeared on TheStreet. In a whirlwind of politics, pop culture, and crypto chaos, a new Solana-based memecoin called Kill The Bill (KILLBILL) has exploded more than 1,300% within 24 hours — all after Elon Musk blasted President Donald Trump's latest federal spending proposal, calling it the 'Debt Slavery Bill.' Launched less than 16 hours ago on Solana's memecoin launchpad PumpSwap, KILLBILL is a clear reference to Quentin Tarantino's cult classic Kill Bill. As of now, the token is priced at $0.00009575 and has already seen $8.68 million in trading volume with over 81,000 transactions, according to GeckoTerminal. The surge appears to be driven by Musk's viral opposition to the 1,100-page 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' which passed the House on May 22. The bill is set to raise the national debt ceiling by potentially over $2.4 trillion, piling on top of the existing $36 trillion debt load. 'If this bill is passed, it will bankrupt the country,' Musk warned earlier this week. On Wednesday, he posted to his 180 million X followers: 'Call your Senator. Call your Congressman. Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL.' Shortly after, Bitwise's Jeff Parks responded to the post with a photoshopped Kill Bill movie poster — but with Musk's face swapped in, helping fuel the memecoin frenzy. As of this writing, KILLBILL has 4,325 holders and net buys of over $57,000 — numbers that suggest coordinated retail enthusiasm rather than organic utility. While there's no indication that Musk is associated with the token, that hasn't stopped opportunists from piggybacking on the attention. Despite the hype, there's zero evidence Musk is connected to the KILLBILL token — and traders should be aware that memecoins built around political moments have often ended in rug pulls or sudden collapses. The speed and anonymity of Solana memecoin launches have made them both alluring and risky. As always, traders should proceed with caution. St. Louis advocates warn of ICE texts urging ‘case reviews'
ST. LOUIS – As U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown efforts continue, some immigrants are receiving text messages from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) asking them to report to local offices for a 'case review'—messages' some attorneys say may be misleading or deceptive. The Migrant and Immigration Community Action Project, a St. Louis-based immigrant advocacy group known as MICA, addressed the issue during a news conference on Wednesday. MICA says these messages are not just limited to St. Louis or Missouri. The group says similar texts have been reported in at least 14 other U.S. cities. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now One alleged text message, which MICA sent to FOX 2 as a screenshot, reads, 'Your ICE officer has requested that you report to the office for a case review this week… Please arrive either on Tuesday, June 3rd, or Wednesday, June 4th.' According to MICA, some individuals who received the texts were allowed to check in like normal and leave, while others are being detained by ICE officers inside courtrooms. When asked if this kind of courtroom presence is standard, St. Louis immigration attorney David Cox said, Not typically. 'They wouldn't be there as a witness,' said St. Louis immigration attorney David Cox. 'They're just members of the public, because the courts are open to the public. They're just showing up, they're standing in corners, some of them in plain clothes, some of them are wearing their official uniforms, so it's across the spectrum what we're seeing.' Attorneys are urging everyone who receives ICE 'case review' text messages, regardless of their current home state, to bring legal representation with them. According to NBC News, ICE made the most immigrant arrests in a single day in the agency's history on Tuesday, reportedly detaining more than 2,200 individuals. Attorneys told NBC News that at least some of those arrests appear to be tied to the mass text messages. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
