There's one big motivator that makes people waste less food – and it isn't sustainability

People who care about nutrition are more effective at cutting food waste than those motivated by sustainability alone, a new study has found.
A survey of more than 1,000 Australians found that nutrition -conscious consumers were more likely to plan meals, avoid overbuying and use leftovers.
By contrast, people who prioritised buying environmentally produced food did not necessarily manage their food in a way that reduced waste.
'People who prioritise healthy eating tend to plan meals and avoid over-purchasing – behaviours that significantly reduce food waste,' said study lead author Dr Trang Thi Thu Nguyen from the University of Adelaide 's Centre for Global Food and Resources.
'The idea that sustainability -conscious consumers would also waste less food seems logical. After all, they actively seek out ethical and environmentally friendly products. However, those who prioritise sustainability often focus on choosing environmentally friendly products, but do not necessarily translate that concern into waste-reducing behaviours.'
The findings, published in Resources, Conservation and Recycling on Wednesday, challenge the common assumption that sustainability-focused consumers naturally waste less.
In fact, the study found no significant link between sustainability motivations and lower food waste.
Australia throws away an estimated 7.6 million tonnes of food each year – the equivalent of 312kg per person – costing the economy around $36.6bn and individual households up to $2,500 annually, according to End Food Waste Australia. Globally, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates food waste contributes 9.3 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually.
Dr Nguyen said a shift in approach was required to reduce the environmental and economic burden of food waste.
'Rather than focusing on sustainability as a standalone concept, future food waste reduction campaigns should emphasise the link between nutrition and food waste,' she said.
'People are often more motivated by personal health benefits than by abstract environmental concerns, so framing waste reduction as part of a healthy lifestyle could be more persuasive.'
By encouraging meal planning, mindful shopping and proper food storage as part of a balanced diet, Dr Nguyen said significant strides could be made in the fight against food waste.
'Not only will this help households reduce the thousands of dollars lost to food waste each year – which is crucial in a cost-of-living crisis – but it will also promote healthier eating habits among Australians,' she said.
'Ultimately, the key to a more sustainable food system might not be just about choosing the right products, it's about how we manage, prepare, and consume them.'
The researchers used structural equation modelling to understand how different motivations shaped behaviour.
Nutrition-focused consumers were more likely to plan meals, check their pantry before shopping, and make detailed grocery lists. They also reported buying less food than they needed. These planning habits were strongly linked with lower food waste.
In contrast, sustainability-conscious consumers were more likely to focus on buying local or organic produce, but their behaviour did not translate into similar waste-reducing habits.
The study also found that older people tended to waste less food while income and gender made no significant difference.
However, the study had some limitations. The data relied on self-reported answers, which might not be fully accurate, and focused on food waste estimates from households in metropolitan Adelaide. To improve accuracy, the researchers implemented familiar reference points – like standard household bins and kitchen caddies – to assist participants in estimating waste.
This is one of the first studies to directly examine whether sustainability and nutrition values translate into different levels of household food waste, offering a new way to align climate goals with personal health by focusing on food management, not just product labels.

'I didn't even realise I was numbing anything,' she told me in one of our recent therapy sessions. 'I just thought I liked to have fun. But looking back, I was terrified of feeling anything real.' Jamie, now 39, is part of a growing number of Australians rethinking their relationship with alcohol. For her, drinking wasn't just a habit, it was a coping mechanism – although she was the last one to realise this. She was drinking to blur the edges. There wasn't a traumatic event that she could remember, but because feeling sad or lonely or anxious felt unbearable, alcohol helped her skip past that. It worked – until it didn't. Her 'bottom' wasn't dramatic; she told me in one session it was more like a slow hollowing, and she got tired of waking up feeling like a stranger to herself. The turning point came in the early months of the pandemic. Isolated from friends, stripped of distractions, she began to realise how often she reached for wine to fill the space. 'One night I was sitting alone with a glass of pinot, and I remember thinking – what would happen if I didn't drink this?' That question changed everything. Jamie decided to stop drinking 'just for a month'. But when the fog began to lift, she couldn't go back. She describes early sobriety as raw and revealing. She was suddenly face to face with everything she pushed away for years – grief, anxiety, even joy – and it became overwhelming. Alcohol addiction is often less about the substance itself, and more about what it helps a person avoid. From a clinical standpoint, we understand alcohol not just as a chemical dependency, but as an emotional anaesthetic – one that temporarily blunts the nervous system's distress signals. Many individuals who struggle with problematic drinking patterns may have started out chasing pleasure and to be social; but consistent reliance upon alcohol can result in using it to flee pain such as unprocessed grief, chronic stress, shame, anxiety or trauma. The neurobiology of addiction reveals that alcohol activates the brain's reward system while simultaneously suppressing the prefrontal cortex, impairing emotional regulation and decision-making. In this way, alcohol becomes a fast, accessible tool for short-term relief – even if it compounds emotional dysregulation in the long term. What makes this cycle so complex is that emotional numbing isn't always conscious. Clients often present in therapy describing 'overwhelm', 'flatness' or 'disconnection', without immediately recognising that these are signs of emotional avoidance – and that alcohol has become part of that equation. Therapy helps illuminate the underlying patterns: how early attachment dynamics, adverse childhood experiences or unresolved trauma may have shaped a person's tolerance for emotional discomfort. A trauma-informed approach encourages clients to build somatic awareness, develop emotional literacy and begin tolerating – rather than bypassing – their internal experience. Recovery, then, is not only about abstaining from alcohol; it's about being able to stay present with what's real and building a nervous system that can feel without needing to flee. In group therapy with professional guidance, Jamie started to see how she had numbed her emotions and buried the difficulties she had experienced in her life. 'I sat with just me,' she recalled. 'And I started crying and couldn't stop. It felt like every emotion I'd stored was finally being released.' I encouraged Jamie to begin journalling daily and start each entry with the question: 'What am I feeling today?' Sometimes she said it was anger. Sometimes relief. Sometimes nothing at all. Jamie finally allowed herself to feel – not with fear, but with curiosity. Our emotions can serve as signposts, gently pointing us toward the places where healing is needed: our blockages, our numbness and the parts of us that have gone quiet in the face of hopelessness. Recovery – from drinking, from disconnection, from self-avoidance – isn't linear, and Jamie is still in that process. But what's changed is her willingness to stay with herself, especially when things feel hard. Jamie is one of many emerging in what some call the 'sober curious' movement. But for her, it's not about labels or lifestyle – it's about presence. She's not interested in moralising alcohol use. It's not about judging drinking. It's about asking why. Why am I drinking? Along with purring and hairballs, cats are also well known for their love of milk. But you should never give your cat a bowl of the white stuff, an expert has revealed. Like all mammals, cats begin life drinking from their mother and constantly meowing for more. However once they are past kittenhood, milk is a completely unnecessary part of their diet, experts say. Julia Henning, from the school of animal and veterinary science at the University of Adelaide, explained that the majority of cats are actually lactose intolerant. After they have finished weaning, at around six to 12 weeks of age, kittens stop producing the enzyme lactase – required to digest lactose in milk - she said. If they are then given cow's milk – which contains much higher levels of lactose than the milk of mother cats – they can experience unpleasant symptoms including bloating, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Cats who drink milk or dairy regularly are at increased risk of these health complications. And it could even become deadly, as chronic diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and malnutrition. Previous studies have suggested that cats may initially enjoy cow's milk because of the high levels of protein and fats in it. Cow's milk has also been linked to a calming effect in our feline companions. So, is it okay to give them a bit of milk every now and then? 'The short answer is no,' Ms Henning told The Conversation. 'Dairy is not a natural part of cats' diet. While they may like the taste, milk is likely to cause your furry friend discomfort and health issues, so it's best to avoid entirely. 'And if you're thinking your cat is one of the lucky few that isn't lactose intolerant, think again. 'Cats are very good at hiding discomfort because, in the wild, showing weakness would make them a target for predators. 'If you absolutely must, opt for lactose-free milk or milk formulated specifically for cats, and keep it as a very occasional treat. 'While it won't upset their stomachs in the same way as regular cow's milk, it still won't offer your cat any nutritional benefit.' Milk alternatives such as oat, soy or almond milk are also likely to cause digestive upset, as they are an unusual addition to a cat's diet, she added. 'The bottom line? Don't give your cat milk,' she said. 'They don't need it, they probably can't digest it and it's likely to cause more pain than it's worth.' A previous study, published in 2023, found that some cats like to play fetch in the same way as dogs. A survey of nearly 1,000 owners also suggests cats like to be in control of the game and respond best when they lead the play. While fetching is not typically associated with felines, the researchers believe the behaviour is instinctive – often happening without any formal training. Based on their findings, published in the journal Nature, the academics are urging cat owners to be more attuned to their pets' needs and their preferences for play. They say that playing fetch may be beneficial for the welfare of the cat and may strengthen the bond between the pet and its owner.
