Court orders trial of 10 cops for custodial torture
Rajkot: A court here has ordered criminal proceedings against ten policemen for alleged custodial torture of a suspect in 2015. These policemen were posted at Gandhigram police station in Rajkot at the time and will now face trial.
Second additional chief judicial magistrate V D Modh issued summons to all ten accused, directing them to appear before the court. The next hearing will be on Aug 2.
The matter dates to Jan 6, 2015, when a judicial magistrate first class submitted a private letter to the district judge, raising concerns about custodial torture.
The complaint was based on allegations by Chetan Gondaliya, who had been arrested under IPC Sections 307 (attempted murder), 504 (intentional insult) and others.
The district judge ordered an inquiry into the allegations, under which the court recorded Gondaliya's testimony and that of the treating doctor, who also submitted a medical certificate for injuries suffered.
In its order dated May 29, 2025, the court observed: "This court submitted the inquiry report to the district judge on May 23, 2025, finding prima facie that Gandhigram police station inspector V M Jadeja, PSI Haidya, DCP Chaudhary, Kuldeepsinh Jadeja, Siddhrajsinh Jadeja, Kisan, Pratap, Raju Bala, Kripalsinh and Ravat Ahir, in connivance with each other, assaulted Chetan Gondaliya, causing bodily injuries and thereby committed offences punishable under IPC Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 114 (abetment).

On May 27, the district court directed the magisterial court to begin criminal proceedings. The additional chief judicial magistrate thus ordered the registration of a case and issued summons to the accused on May 29.
Rajesh Chavda, who represents Gondaliya, stated, "All the accused are policemen. The court took cognisance of the matter from 2015 based on the victim's testimony when he was produced in court by police. As the court wasn't in session on Friday, proceedings are expected to begin on the next scheduled date."

Suspecting affair, man murders wife in Paharganj hotel
New Delhi: A 24-year-old woman was killed at a hotel in central Delhi's Paharganj allegedly on suspicion of an extramarital affair on Friday night. An inquiry revealed that it was the husband who called Uttar Pradesh Police, admitting to killing his wife. Delhi Police has arrested him. At 3am on Friday, police received a call from the manager of a hotel in Paharganj about a woman's body lying in one of its rooms. A police officer said the manager said he received a phone call from UP Police around 2.45am, asking him to check the hotel room. The manager found the woman lying dead on the bed and informed the sub-inspector from UP Police. The sub-inspector told the manager that the accused was with him. He also informed Delhi Police. The local police found that 24-year-old Gopal Sharma checked into the hotel at 6.35pm on Thursday along with Kirti Sharma as husband and wife. Around 9pm, he left the hotel alone on the pretext of bringing food from outside. However, he never returned. Gopal travelled to Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, where he called the emergency helpline number 112 and confessed to killing his wife. Singapore trip: Travel agent accused of fraud tries to end life as cops serve notice
Bengaluru: A travel agent, accused of duping a group of gram panchayat members of over Rs 19 lakh by promising to arrange their trip to Singapore, allegedly attempted to end his life when police officers went to serve him notice. The group had lodged a cheating case with police on June 5 stating they were stranded in Singapore as Manohar, the proprietor of 99 Tours, had not kept his promise of making the travel arrangement despite collecting the money. Manohar's alleged suicide attempt occurred on June 15, after head constable Praveen V of Magadi Road police station tried to deliver a summons to his office at Invenu Global Gateway, located near Bashyam Circle, Rajajinagar. According to a complaint filed with Basaveshwaranagar police, Praveen first visited Manohar's office but found it locked. He then proceeded to Manohar's home at Kirloskar Colony. On being handed the notice, Manohar allegedly refused to accept it, verbally abused the constable, and threatened him saying he would get the officer fired from his job. Following this, Praveen alerted his senior officers. However, no arrangements had been made, and no one turned up to receive them. The group was left stranded in Singapore and had to make their own arrangements by paying extra through another contact. Upon their return, Gowda and others lodged a complaint alleging that Manohar had cheated them of Rs 19.2 lakh — the extra amount they had to spend during their trip. In his defence, Manohar told TOI flight charges had increased unexpectedly, and he had no intention of cheating anyone. He said he was seeking time to return the money. "My friend is responsible for the allegations against me. I will be filing a complaint against him," he said. The attempt to evade legal action by consuming poison has now placed Manohar under legal scrutiny for a second offence.
