Hong Kong Sevens great says touch rugby's ‘huge selling point' could mean Olympic inclusion
Touch rugby's mixed version was a 'huge selling point' and could allow it to gatecrash the Olympic Games, according to former Hong Kong Sevens superstar Ricky Cheuk Ming-yin.

Cheuk, who represented the city at last year's Touch World Cup, was elected as a director of Hong Kong, China Rugby in November.
He was among a healthy crowd watching Sunday's 2025 Hong Kong International Touch Championships at Happy Valley Recreation Ground, as the ball started rolling for a week-long rugby carnival in the city that will climax with Kai Tak Stadium's first Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
Cheuk said he was 'exploring how to integrate touch and sevens', with a view to the non-contact version providing local players for the Hong Kong sevens teams.
A veteran of the 2001 and 2005 Rugby Sevens World Cups, he also underlined his wish to make the touch championships better each year. It currently happens over one 12-hour day, but Cheuk was hoping for a two-day competition as soon as next year.

That would mirror the midweek Tradition HKFC10s, which provide the competitive curtain raiser for the flagship sevens. Sunday's tournament, which featured 26 sides across three competitions, saw local teams joined by opponents from mainland China, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan.

Hong Kong missed the chance to create a thriving, world-class cricket hub when plans for a suitable playing arena at Kai Tak were abandoned, the sport's former chief in the city has said. Advertisement Tim Cutler said he had pushed during his two years as Cricket Hong Kong chief executive for the secondary stadium at Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) – now known as the youth sports ground – to be configured for cricket. Melbourne Cricket Club was among the sub-consultants employed during KTSP's planning stage. Ultimately, however, an athletics track was installed at the 5,000-seat venue, which can also stage football and rugby. 'There are so many facilities with running tracks nearby, but Hong Kong has no world-class cricket ground to host major events,' said Cutler, who could not bring himself to visit the smaller venue when he attended March's Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens at Kai Tak Stadium. 'All the early designs had cricket in the sports ground. It's 150 metres [in diameter], which is exactly what you need for top-level cricket. It's hugely frustrating.' Photo: AFP San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is stepping down after 29 seasons, six months after being sidelined by a stroke, the NBA team announced on Friday. San Antonio said in a statement that Popovich, 76, would transition to a new role as president of basketball operations. "While my love and passion for the game remain, I've decided it's time to step away as head coach," Popovich said in a statement released by San Antonio. "I'm forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organisation, community and city that are so meaningful to me." Popovich, who amassed a record 1,422 regular-season wins during his coaching career and led San Antonio to five NBA championships, is one of the most beloved figures in basketball. He joined San Antonio as an assistant coach in 1988 and has spent 37 years in the league as a coach and executive. Apart from two seasons as an assistant coach at the Golden State Warriors, the entirety of Popovich's career has been spent in San Antonio. Popovich also led the United States to a gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "Coach Pop's extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs, and the game of basketball is profound," Spurs managing partner Peter J Holt said in a statement. Speculation about Popovich's ability to continue in his role as Spurs head coach has swirled since he suffered a mild stroke in November, which left him unable to coach the team for the rest of the recently concluded regular season. That sense of uncertainty was heightened last month after he was reportedly hospitalised following a "medical incident" at a restaurant with what was described as a non-life-threatening injury or illness. Popovich had already announced in February that he would play no part in the remainder of the Spurs' season, saying he planned to concentrate on his health "with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future." Sevens' financial future at stake, changes necessary for Olympics
World Rugby said the changes to its sevens competition were designed to secure the sport's financial future and grow its global reach ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Advertisement Confirming it was slashing the number of teams in the World Series from 12 to eight, and installing a six-team second division, the sport's governing body also said regular tournaments would be cut from three days to just two. There was no word, however, on the format for the new World Championship Series, which will be played over three events and include the 12 best men's and women's teams. 'The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is a globally renowned, iconic event for rugby sevens fans and we are committed to supporting World Rugby in delivering a sustainable and exciting new model of SVNS,' Hong Kong China Rugby said in a statement. 'Further details and event dates will be announced in due course.'
