‘Leaving Home' review: David French's classic Canadian drama gets an overpowered production at Coal Mine Theatre

There are 'kitchen-sink' dramas. And then there are kitchen-sink dramas with an actual kitchen sink in them.
You know things are going to get serious when you're greeted with the latter, which is the case with Matchstick Theatre's new revival of 'Leaving Home,' David French's classic Canadian drama and the first work in his seminal Mercer cycle.
In director Jake Planinc's production, which premiered in Nova Scotia and is now running at Toronto's Coal Mine Theatre, the kitchen sink is prominently placed in Wesley Babcock's stylish set, depicting a modest, mid-century home in Toronto. By the end of this two-hour drama, it's piled high with filthy dishes, scraps of food and grimy cutlery — an apt visual metaphor for what has come before.

French's 1972 play is steeped in naturalism, a portrait of a family whose relationships with each other are like a minefield embedded with latent grenades, which are triggered, one by one, over a single day.
That day is the eve of 17-year-old Bill Mercer's (Sam Vigneault) shotgun wedding with his pregnant girlfriend, Kathy (Abby Weisbrot). But the story really revolves around Bill's older brother, Ben (Lou Campbell), and his fraught relationship with their short-tempered father, Jacob (Andrew Musselman), a man whose mouth moves faster than his brain.
'Leaving Home,' however, is more than its narrative. It's a tapestry of interwoven character studies. And at its centre is the mercurial Jacob. He's hurt, bitter, impulsive. The source of his anger never seems certain. Is it out of love? Or out of pure spite for his children and his wife, Mary (Shelley Thompson)?

The play's naturalism is accentuated in this production by Planinc's in-the-round staging, with the audience completely surrounding the Mercers' house. But almost across the board, the performances feel miscalibrated for the intimate space. Overly broad, sometimes more fitting for a sitcom rather than serious drama, they puncture the delicate script.
The actors try to do too much with French's text, which should build, slowly yet inevitably, toward its painful climax. Dialogue is over-enunciated. Scenes in the first half are played with such full-throttled intensity that the play's back end doesn't crackle with the ferocity that it should have. Moments that should zip instead feel laboured.
Behind it all, French's play remains an exquisitely constructed drama. But in this latest revival, it's masked by an overpowered production.

'No hate, no drama – just pure Toronto energy, positive vibes, and a full-out celebration of the legend who BUILT the sound of this city,' organizers said. But shortly before the show started, the gathering was scrapped after police shut them down. In an Instagram post, a group calling itself The 6 Takeover said they were trying to 'create good vibes for the city.' 'But unfortunately, some people decided to report us, falsely claiming we were planning to 'start trouble' or cause chaos,' they wrote. 'Because of those reporters, police were already on high alert and were quick to shut down anything that even looked like a crowd forming – including us.' They then returned to the platform to ask for donations to help foot the bill for the $11,000 they allegedly spent for Drake-themed hoodies planners had purchased for attendees. 'It's for a good cause, and any amount is appreciated,' the coordinators begged. They also claimed that Lamar was ' too shook to sleep in Toronto.' Inside the venue, videos shared to social media showed it was all love between Lamar and the sold-out crowd that packed Rogers Centre. When Lamar dusted off his chart-topping Not Like Us , a diss track that seemingly ended his beef with Drake, the audience cheered relentlessly and pleaded for him to play the song 'One more time.' It was a triumphant victory lap and perhaps the final word on a rap rivalry that started last spring a fter Lamar responded to a line in Drake and J. Cole's 2023 song First Person Shooter , in which Cole referred to the three of them as the industry's three greatest hip-hop artists. 'We the big three like we started a league,' Cole rapped. Lamar dismissed that declaration on Future and Metro Boomin's Like That , spitting back, 'It's just big me.' He also hit out at Drake on back-to-back diss tracks Euphoria and 6:16 in LA in which he called the lyricist 'a terrible person.' Drake escalated the feud by mocking Lamar for appearing on songs by Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift and made digs at the Compton freestyler's short stature, calling him a 'pipsqueak.' On another diss track, Taylor Made Freestyle , Drake used AI-generated rhymes by Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg to further besmirch Lamar's name. But on his Grammy-winning Not Like Us , Lamar took things to another level when he branded Drake as a pedophile. The lines alluded to a 2010 concert video that resurfaced nearly a decade later in which the Canadian hitmaker invited a teenage fan onto the stage at a Denver show, where he proceeded to dance and fondle her. Lamar's Not Like Us also included a dig at his adversary's Certified Lover Boy album title (' Certified Lover Boy ? Certified pedophile'), made claims that he slept with Lil Wayne's ex and used an image of Drake's Toronto mansion marked with red pedophile markers as the track's cover art. Drake ended up suing Universal Music Group, the label which represents both artists, accusing the company of promoting Lamar's false pedophilia allegations and putting his life in danger. But Universal Music said that Drake was a willing participant in the war of words when he released his own inflammatory diss tracks aimed at Lamar and hinted he was trying to take legal action because he was the loser in their rap feud. 'Plaintiff, one of the most successful recording artists of all time, lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated,' they responded in April. 'Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds.' In the lead-up to the pair of Toronto concerts this week, tickets for Lamar's shows were slow moving and prices dropped significantly. Air India plane crash: Salman Khan offers prayers for victims, their families
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 12 (ANI): The tragic incident of a plane crash in Ahmedabad has left everyone in deep grief and shock on learning about the news, many members of the Indian film fraternity took to their respective social media handles to offer condolences to the victims and their families. A while ago, actor Salman Khan expressed grief over the incident, sending his heartfelt prayers to the affected people. In a post on Instagram, he wrote, 'Deeply saddened to hear about the Ahmedabad plane crash... heartfelt prayers for the families of the passengers, crew and all those affected.' Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have also offered condolences and prayers for the victims and their families. In a post on X, SRK expressed, 'Absolutely heartbroken with the news about the crash in Ahmedabad... my prayers for the victims, their families and all affected.' Aamir reacted to the Air India crash via a post on the 'Aamir Khan Productions' Instagram account. In the message, his team expressed grief and said they stand in solidarity with everyone. The note read, 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash that occurred today. At this moment of profound loss, our thoughts and condolences are with the families of those affected. Only prayers at this time,' Akshay Kumar posted on X. The Air India plane from Ahmedabad to London with 242 passengers crashed in the Meghaninagar area near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. According to an Air India statement, the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, operating as Flight AI-171, departed from Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm IST with 242 people on board, including crew. 'The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hours, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals. We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information,' the airline said in a statement. The aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, an LTC with 8,200 hours of flying experience. He was assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had 1,100 hours of flying experience, the official said. As per Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Runway 23 at 1339 IST (0809 UTC). It gave a mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. 'Aircraft immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site,' the official added. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has deployed around 150 personnel to assist in the ongoing rescue and relief operations following the crash. According to a statement by the CRPF, troops from the 100 Battalion of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), along with personnel from the CRPF's Group Centre in Gandhinagar, have been sent to the crash site to support efforts on the ground. The Gujarat government has also mobilised three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising 90 personnel from Gandhinagar, to assist in rescue operations. (ANI)

He said that it has shocked everyone and that 'this tragedy cannot be forgotten.' Speaking to ANI, he said, 'This tragedy, which has occurred in Ahmedabad where an Air India aircraft has crashed with more than 200 people who lost their lives, is undefinable. It's very sad, one is under shock, and one can't even imagine all those passengers who must have sat in the aircraft and were about to fly to London would have ever imagined that this is going to be their fate. The pilot, the staff, the passengers, it's a tragedy which has moved everyone, it has shocked everyone.' He continued, 'One cannot express in words, no dictionary can define this tragedy. My heartfelt condolences to the family, all the families who have lost their near and dear ones. And imagine the aircraft falling on a residential place amongst people who are living and it falls down on a hospital where it's reported that the doctors, MBBS doctors have also died in this crash. Goosebumps, you know, it's sending shivers down your spine.' The filmmaker shared that he is sure that the government will give their complete support to the victims and their families. 'I'm sure the government will go all out and see to it that the families are taken care. And it cannot be forgotten, this tragedy cannot be forgotten.' He said that it has left the entire nation in shock and extended condolences to the families of the victims. 'Visuals after visuals are coming on your mobiles, and it's shattering you, it is really moving you. And one really thinks to himself that nobody deserves this kind of a death, nobody deserves this kind of a tragedy. It's a tragedy that the entire nation is mourning; in fact, the entire world will mourn this tragedy, which has occurred in Ahmedabad. Heartfelt condolences to the entire family and all those people who have lost their lives,' he shared. Confirming the incident, Air India said that among the 242 passengers, 169 were Indians, 53 Britishers, seven Portuguese and one Canadian national.
