Perthshire entrepreneur Annabel Wilson promoting rural Scotland

The Courier05-05-2025

A Perthshire woman who grew up in the countryside has told why her mission is to showcase rural businesses to the world.
Annabel Wilson started her own social media management company, in order to 'elevate and celebrate' businesses representing the unique character of rural Scotland.
She hopes to make a difference through the power of social media, with her own firm, Annabel Wilson Social Media Management.
Annabel answered our questions on her biggest struggles, achievements and more.
I've always had an entrepreneurial streak. Growing up in the Scottish countryside with a business-minded father rubbed off on me.
A rural accommodation provider asked me to take over their business social media, and that was the spark I needed to turn it into my full-time venture.
I choose to work exclusively with rural Scottish businesses.
Marketing these businesses isn't the same as promoting ones in the city, it's a whole different language, and one I understand deeply.
I had the audacity to believe in myself, kept showing up even on the tough days, and made sure to celebrate both the small and big wins along the way.
I've also been lucky to have support from brilliant organisations like the Federation of Small Businesses.
Mentors, family, and friends – don't underestimate the power of the people you surround yourself with.
Confide in a trusted few, invest in good mentors, and keep working on yourself.
If you can think it, you can do it. If you can think of the wildly ambitious goals, it means you can achieve them.
Not having formal contracts earlier on. Sadly, people aren't always honest and trustworthy, even if you know them.
Making my first client go viral on social media and selling my first digital product.
I keep things simple – I work remotely, use automation where it makes sense, and focus on making the best use of my time.
Again, support from FSB has been a huge help, with access to discounted or even free services that make running my business easier.
One of my biggest hopes is to speak at my old school to inspire young people to consider starting their own business here in rural Scotland.
I'd also love to speak at a rural sector conference to share what I've learned and support even more people across the country.
My goal is to make a meaningful impact on the Scottish rural sector.
Exploring some of the most untouched rugged corners of Scotland and helping rural businesses in those areas gain visibility online is something I feel passionate about.
And, by the end of 2025, I hope to have sold 10,000 travel guides-supporting thousands of people to experience Scotland's most incredible hidden gems.
They could partner with me to promote rural businesses and brands through my engaged online audience and support initiatives to support young entrepreneurs.

Administration extended for ex-Dundee United chief Stephen Thompson's failed business

The administration of Stephen Thompson's failed convenience shop business will extend into next year. The former Dundee United chief set up Eddy's Food Station in 2022 with ambitions to grow to 50 shops and 800 staff within five years. But two years later the business entered administration, with millions of pounds of debt. Mr Thompson was subsequently made bankrupt a week before Christmas last year. Since being appointed in April last year, administrators from FRP Advisory have been working to sell the company's assets and establish the scale of the debt. The administration process was due to conclude in April but has been extended until April 24 next year. This will give administrators more time to adjudicate on creditor claims and distribute funds. Eddy's Food Station grew to have six shops – including locations in Ceres, Leuchars and Buckhaven in Fife – though just three outlets remained at the time of collapse. A new progress report from FRP shows the scale of the company's debts. A secured creditor, Nash Business Services Limited is owed £3.8m while HMRC is due £141,000 and unsecured creditors are owed around £550,000. The three remaining stores owned by the company were sold to Dundee-based CJ Lang for £1.5m a year ago. This included sums of £35,000 for stock and £110,000 for furniture and equipment. FRP expects HMRC will be repaid in full and there will be 'sufficient funds available to make a partial distribution to unsecured creditors'. In terms of the secured creditor, the new report adds that 'an issue with the security remains unresolved, and the secured creditor is assessing their options'. Mr Thompson previously told The Courier that 'no banks would speak to him' as the company failed. He highlighted spiralling energy costs as one of the reasons the business didn't work. However, FRP said the company had 'paid premiums' to secure leases as it built up its portfolio of six stores and had also incurred 'substantial' refurbishment costs. It said three sites were sold at a substantial discount. The administrator said: 'The company has struggled with high debt servicing costs and had experienced cash flow pressures caused by high investment costs and lack of profitability.' The administrators said the extent of debts in the company meant a sale as a going concern was impossible because 'the company did not have sufficient working capital to trade in the short term and insufficient assets to liquidate to satisfy creditor demands'. Mr Thompson, who sold his Dundee United shareholding in 2018, previously stated he had invested his 'total pension pot' into Eddy's Food Station. The businessman was granted sequestration – the Scottish term for the legal process of declaring someone bankrupt – on December 18. A document available at Accountant in Bankruptcy, Scotland's insolvency service, details his level of debt at £881,833. Mr Thompson announced he had filed for bankruptcy when he was a guest on BBC's Off The Ball radio show at the start of November. When asked by host Tam Cowan what he has been up to, he said: 'Well, I've kind of hit rock bottom to be honest. I actually signed a petition for bankruptcy yesterday. 'It's not a great place to be in life but it's a fresh start for me.'

Midlothian councillors urged the Scottish Government's Energy Consent Unit to consider the fact the new Battery Energy Storage System, known as BESS, would be so close to the Dalkeith campus which has around 2,500 children and young people in its roll. But a meeting of the council's planning committee next week will hear the BESS has been approved with no mention of fire risks or the proximity of the school in the Minister's decision. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A report to councillors says: 'The Ministers are satisfied that landscape and visual impacts, impacts on traffic, impacts from noise, coal mining legacy issues, decommissioning, and pollution prevention can all be mitigated via the use of conditions. A Battery Energy Storage System is proposed for field behind Dalkeith schools campus. (Pic: Google Maps) 'The determination letter does not make any comment on fire risk or the safety of the schools campus.' Ministers determined the benefits of the new site would be vital to meeting net zero targets They said: 'Energy storage such as the proposed development provides will be vital in that context to help maintain the balance between supply and demand, to ensuring security of supply, and to reducing the curtailment of renewable generators under grid constraints which would otherwise result in a loss of valuable renewable generation. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Secure and stable energy supply is a fundamental need of a prosperous economy. As well as the potential economic benefit to local and national businesses during construction, the proposed development would provide further benefit to the economy through its contribution to underpinning energy security and flexibility.' Midlothian councillors wrote to the Energy Consent Unit, which is responsible for decisions about BESS applications, to raise their concern about it being placed on a 12 hectare field behind the school campus which includes Dalkeith and St Davids High Schools as well as Saltersgate School and Woodburn Primary School. Councillor Ellen Scott, SNP administration education spokesperson, told a meeting of the planning committee in December that there had been an explosion and major fire in Merseyside four years ago at a battery storage unit where it was reported the temperature on the site rose to 40 degrees Celsius within two minutes. She said: 'This site is just 70 metres from the edge of the schools campus where 2,500 of our young people, some very young at three years old and some with severe complex needs, are going to be.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Her comments were supported by Councillor Dianne Alexander who also said the site was over a 'coal seam and gas pipe' She said: 'I just think this is too dangerous for us to allow.' The proposals for the site include a BESS with a capacity of 200 megawatts with 168 storage containers spread across four compounds. The containers will be used to house Lithium-ion batteries and the compounds will be hard surfaced and enclosed with three metre high fencing. The report to councillors next week says: 'The Scottish Ministers in making their determination on the application, have balanced all relevant considerations, decided what weight is to be given to each and reached a view as to where the balance of benefit lies. 'On balance, it is considered that the impacts of the proposed development are acceptable in the context of its benefits, and that the development is supported by relevant planning and energy policies.'
