Comes here without a penalty for winning at Chelmsford on Sunday. He relishes this trip on the all-weather and he can deliver in the same grade as last time out.

Created a good impression when third on debut at Kempton. William Haggas has given him a little break since then and he looks ready to get off the mark.

DOCKLANDS (1.35 Epsom, nb) He has some fancy Group 1 form including his second in the Queen Anne at last year's Royal Ascot. He was sent all over the globe after that with solid results and ran a solid comeback at Ascot last time. He'll be fitter for that and has won on quick and slow ground. He showed lots of promise last season and returned with a solid fourth at Goodwood last time. He should improve for that fitness wise and he handles any ground. Templegate's TV verdicts EPSOM 1.00 IF it comes up properly soft by racetime, Sparks Fly would be a cracking bet given her superb record in testing conditions. But assuming it's good to soft or quicker, ROYAL DRESS is the one to be on. She was an unlucky third in this last year before striking in this grade at The Curragh. She has since held her own in better races including when third at York last time. William Buick is an eyecatching booking too. Bermuda Longtail looked promising when beaten half a length in a York Listed contest last month and has much more to come. She gets plenty of weight for age too. Skellet progressed last season and is another who should be capable of better for Ralph Beckett. 1.35 DOCKLANDS has some fancy Group 1 form including his second in the Queen Anne at last year's Royal Ascot. He was sent all over the globe after that with solid results and ran a solid comeback at Ascot last time. He'll be fitter for that and has won on quick and slow ground. Persica didn't fire in the Lockinge last time but took a Newmarket Group 3 easily enough on comeback and has won here before. Ryan Moore's a good booking and he's a big threat. Royal Playwright gets the best part of a stone from his older rivals and didn't get the run of the race in the Dante last time. He could take a major step forward here. Royal Dubai wasn't disgraced at Ascot last time and looks the pick of the bigger prices. 2.10 AGAINST THE WIND could be the answer to this tricky puzzle. He has plenty of weight but has been running well with a Thirsk win followed by a fine York third last time. He gets away quickly so should be suited by this track. Naana's Sparkle ran a nice race at Goodwood last time when third and showed lots of pace. He looks on a fair mark. Ruby's Profit got the better of Mademoiselle in that race and they should both be right at home here too after showing a lot of boot. Tees Aggregates saves his best for Catterick so should love Epsom which is another tricky track. He may not be quite good enough to win but could be an each-way bet if you can get extra places. Blinky won a couple on the all-weather before a decent third at Chester last time. A repeat of that would put him in the place picture from what should be an ideal draw. 2.45 JER BATT always faced a tough task from a wide draw at Chester last time yet still ran a good race. He has some fine handicap form over this trip yet is still on a fair weight and the booking of Oisin Murphy is a plus. He'll be right there. Clarendon House is quirky but has enough quality to figure if he fancies it. He went well in the Group 3 Palace House at Newmarket last time. Last year's winner Dream Composer was also badly drawn at Chester latest but looked much better when second at Pontefract on comeback. He can figure again. Jm Jungle has been placed in hot York handicaps on his past two outings. He likes this trip and is a quick starter so has every chance. Vintage Clarets showed positive signs on the Knavesmire latest and is in the each-way picture too. 3.30 PRIDE OF ARRAS was a brilliant Dante winner at York and has more to come. French raider Midak looks overpriced, while Lambourn would have a say if the rain comes. And you never rule out Ryan Moore on Delacroix, especially as the jockey was simply brilliant on Minnie Hauk in the Oaks. The Epsom Derby is a national event and should be given a stand-alone slot like the FA Cup final - not squashed into a crammed schedule, writes DOMINIC KING
Francis-Henri Graffard is one of the world's leading trainers, devoting his life to racing. But in a quiet moment yesterday, he was simply a starstruck fan. Standing on the finishing line, having just walked Epsom's rollercoaster course, he handed his phone to a passer-by and asked for the moment to be captured. This would be the equivalent of Virat Kohli walking into the Long Room at Lord's and requesting a photograph. 'It's the most famous winning post in the world!' Graffard explained to Mail Sport with a smile. 'I needed a good picture! My passion came from my grandfather. I was hooked. Then one day he gave me Federico Tesio's book about the Derby. That was it. It's the race.' It really is. It's the reason racing exists — breeders have been working for 245 years to hone the perfect animal for this test and the sound of the hooves of its greatest winners, from Nijinsky to Shergar to Galileo and Sea The Stars, still thunder through the ages. Tesio, an Italian breeder who lived from 1859 to 1954, said something so profound about the Derby that his quote adorns a wall in the Tipperary offices of Coolmore, the world-renowned bloodstock operation. 'The thoroughbred exists because its selection has depended, not on experts, technicians or zoologists, but on a piece of wood,' said Tesio. 'The winning post of the Epsom Derby.' This is a national event, sporting theatre that should be treated with reverence. Yet, today, when Chantilly-based Graffard's runner Midak and 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court line up with 17 others, the Derby is squashed into a crammed schedule like it is betting shop fodder. Between 3pm and 4pm, there are four other races around the country — two at Musselburgh, two at Worcester. It is an embarrassment for fixture planners and selfish racecourses that a National Hunt bumper, worth just £2,451 to the winner, will be staged 15 minutes after the Derby starts. There is a desire to make the Derby the event it once was, when thousands lined up on Tattenham Hill, and one way to do that would be to have the common sense to make Epsom the only card of the day. No all-weather action, no pointless summer jumping — get all eyes and interest where it matters. It is 30 years since the first seismic change was made to the Derby, shifting it from its once traditional place on a Wednesday to a Saturday, but the time has come to consider another: for one day in the summer, there should be only one card. Think about it. You remember FA Cup finals as they were stand-alone events, why can't this be the same? Watching Ryan Moore, the world's best jockey, possibly light up Epsom on favourite Delacroix will stay in your mind — you would forget the winner of the Worcester bumper before the day is out. Something must be done. Brian Finch, Epsom's impressive chairman, is determined to put sheen back on this fixture — and listening to the passion with which Graffard spoke underlined why the Derby still holds wonder. 'When I worked in England (for Sheik Mohammed's Darley Operation), I came here to walk around Epsom,' said Graffard. 'It was so impressive! A horse needs so many qualities to be competitive in this race. As a trainer, it is a privilege to be able to send a horse to contest it.' Midak, for the record, was supplemented to the Derby field at a cost of £75,000. He will carry the fabled green silks of the late Aga Khan, in whose memory this year's race will be run. 'My horse has everything to prove,' he said. 'He was late maturing, mentally and physically, but he comes here spot on. Let's see what happens.'
