Kolkata: Friends and colleagues of
Bitan Adhikary
, the software engineer from Florida in the USA who was killed in a terror attack at Pahalgam on Tuesday, have launched a
crowdfunding campaign
from Florida to support his grieving family — his ageing parents, his wife Soheni, and three-and-a-half-year-old son Hridaan.
The fundraiser, on the platform
GoFundMe
under the title "In Loving Memory of Bitan Adhikary – Support for his Family", aims to raise $300,000 (Rs 2.6 crore), of which $131,175 (Rs 1.1 crore) was raised by Friday night.

"He is one of the victims of the
Pahalgam terror attack
in Jammu and Kashmir, India. He was visiting India on a vacation and decided to take his family on a tour to Kashmir, and unfortunately, he lost his life in the hands of cruelty. For us, he is a martyr and an unfortunate casualty of this inhumane activity," Bibhas Bera, a friend who started the campaign, wrote on the crowdfunding page. It mentioned that after his sudden death, the family is "now facing financial burdens of ongoing mortgage, auto loan, supporting his family and son's future, and other unexpected costs."

The page also mentions Adhikary, known for his cheerful nature, kindness, and generosity, as the "sole bread-earner" for his family.
The post mentions that every donation will go directly to the family and will be deeply appreciated, but also adds that Soheni is yet to be added as a beneficiary. "Soheni is still not added as a beneficiary because right now, she is busy with press, govt bodies, and preparing rituals for Bitan's last rites. But we understand people's concerns over the authenticity of this fundraiser, so feel free to wait until she is officially added as a beneficiary. We are only trying to help her," the page reads while adding that the fundraiser was started after talking to her.
TOI tried to speak to Soheni on the issue but she refused to comment. Family members said she was too traumatised on Friday after the shraddh rituals.
The website mentions that to withdraw the money, Soheni will have to accept the invitation to be added as a beneficiary, and then she can add her bank details and complete the claims process.

EPFO promise turns into nightmare: Retired Mumbai man duped of Rs 1.4 crore over 1.5 years by fake CBI and PF officials; probe on

Representative image MUMBAI: A former state govt employee was cheated of Rs 1.4 crore by cyber scammers who first led him to believe that he was interacting with a provident fund (PF) official and then scared him into thinking the official was arrested by the CBI. The 73-year-old complainant made payments for 1.5 years before realising that he had been taken for a ride and the documents sent to him were bogus. The west cyber police have registered an FIR and are investigating further. The complainant lives in Andheri with his family. In May 2023, he got a phone call purportedly from the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), New Delhi. The caller introduced himself as Alok Mehta. He told the complainant his PF dues were pending with the organisation and he could claim them once he paid Rs 7,230 as security charges. After the complainant paid the money, Mehta sent him a letter purportedly from the ministry of finance over WhatsApp. The letter had a govt of India seal on it and the complainant was convinced of its authenticity. The document said he would receive Rs 63.08 lakh if he made a payment of Rs 3.8 lakh. Over the next 10 months, Mehta and two other "EPFO representatives" Sunita Tiwari and one Chakraborty stayed in touch with the complainant and got him to pay Rs 60 lakh under various pretexts. In March 2024, the complainant got a phone call from one Mahi Sharma who claimed to be an officer with the CBI's Mumbai office. She said Mehta had been arrested by the CBI for misappropriation of funds and the complainant's PF file had now come to the CBI for scrutiny. The complainant was left shaken. Sharma assured him his PF dues would be paid to him once she completed a thorough probe into his case. Subsequently, she sent him a cheque of his PF dues, but warned him to pay 30% as taxes. She also asked for charges towards issuing him a no-objection certificate as his PF dues were exceeding a crore. The complainant kept making payments as instructed by Sharma till Nov 2024. When he presented the cheque for encashing, he was told it was counterfeit. He approached cops. Police filed an FIR on May 28 and will probe who operated the bank accounts into which the funds were transferred.

'RCB has lakhs of cricket fans': Letter to Karnataka govt shows warning was issued before stampede; new revelation puts pressure on administration

BENGALURU: A senior police officer had raised red flags over the lack of security personnel and potential crowd control issues just hours before a stampede killed 11 people outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebration on Wednesday. According to official letter accessed by the TOI, MN Karibasavana Gowda, who oversees legislature security, issued a written warning to the state government on the morning of the event. In a letter addressed to G Sathyavathi, Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Gowda cautioned against holding a felicitation at the Vidhana Soudha due to anticipated large crowds and insufficient police deployment. 'RCB has a fan following nationwide and lakhs of cricket fans will come to Vidhana Soudha if we organise a programme on the grand steps. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobust arrangements will be a problem,' the officer wrote. This fresh revelation now puts further pressure on the state govt, which is already in the eye of a storm for allegedly prioritising optics over public safety. Fallout and resignations The revelation has intensified public scrutiny of the Karnataka government, which is already facing criticism for allegedly prioritising optics over safety during the celebrations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo On Saturday, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) announced that it had accepted the resignations of two of its senior officials—Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer E S Jairam—who stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the tragedy. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened by KSCA president Raghuram Bhat. 'They placed a letter of resignation in front of the committee, which was accepted after acknowledging the work they have done over the last two and half years,' Bhat told reporters. While Bhat did not disclose the names of interim replacements, sources said MS Vinay and Manjunatha Raju are the frontrunners for the roles. The current managing committee's term ends on September 30, with elections due in October or November. Legal action and investigation An FIR has been registered against the KSCA in connection with the stampede. Bhat said the association would fully cooperate with ongoing investigations. 'It is a very delicate issue. When the appropriate time comes, I myself will call all of you and give detailed information,' he said, adding that some senior police officials had visited the KSCA office during the day as part of the investigation process. 'We have already informed the government and the honourable High Court that we will cooperate fully with the enquiry. We will never shy away from anything.' Bhat ruled out dissolving the entire managing committee despite mounting pressure. 'Nothing of the sort. The game must go on, and that is why the emergency meeting was held. Rest all is fine at the moment,' he said. Bengaluru stampede The stampede, which occurred as lakhs of cricket fans gathered to celebrate RCB's first IPL title win, left 11 dead and 75 injured. The incident triggered outrage and raised serious questions about event planning, crowd management, and safety oversight by both the state administration and KSCA.
