Berkshire firefighters conquer three peaks in memory of two lost
Four firefighters hiked up the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in full kit in memory of their two colleagues who died on duty last month.Dan Medcalf, Matt Hooper, Rob Diton and Cam Young walked up Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon between about 05:00 BST on Friday and 06:30 on Saturday. The quartet, who work at Whitley Wood station in Reading, said the challenge was completed in memory of Oxfordshire firefighters Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler. They died, alongside a member of the public, Dave Chester, at Bicester Motion, Oxfordshire, during a major fire on 15 May.
Mr Hooper, from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said the climbs were much more difficult because of the weight they were carrying."Luckily we didn't have any really hot temperatures," he said."But the moment you move in full kit with a breathing apparatus you really do start to heat up so they were very challenging climbs."The Berkshire firefighters were supported by colleague Rhys Matthews and crew manager Emily James. They have so far raised about £3,000, which will be split equally with the Fire Fighters Charity and Team Charlie, which raises money for children with brain tumours.

Omar Berrada: Manchester United can win Premier League by 2028
Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada remains confident the club can mark their 150th anniversary in 2028 by winning both the men's and women's league titles. Berrada, who first told staff of his 'Project 150' vision in September last year, knows that represents a significant challenge with Ruben Amorim's side having just endured a worst top-flight season since relegation in 1973-74, while Chelsea continue to dominate the Women's Super League. However, he believes marking a major milestone in the club's history since it was founded as Newton Heath in 1878 with double title success is realistic. In an interview with the United We Stand fanzine to be published on Wednesday, Berrada said: 'It's establishing a series of targets within a timeframe so we can focus our efforts and energy on that goal. 'Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course. We've just finished 15th and it seems an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?' While United finished third in the WSL, 16 points behind champions Chelsea, who also beat them in the FA Cup final, the men languished just three places above the Premier League relegation zone and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. Nevertheless, Berrada is sticking to his timetable. He said: 'I firmly believe we can do it. We have two or three summer windows to build a team to start competing to win the Premier League.' United have made one signing so far, Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and Berrada has drawn comparisons between him and Eric Cantona. 'He's a player that I think fans are going to love,' Berrada said. 'We can talk about his technical abilities and he can play in three different positions. He's a playmaking attacking midfielder; he can score goals, he can make assists. I think he's going to lift people off their seats. He's got a bit of a swagger about him that people are going to really like. Dare I say, (Eric) Cantona-esque. 'He was an important one to get done. We're going to do our best to do more signings quickly. Sometimes when you're not quick, it's because you're negotiating and you're trying to make sure you get the right value for money. So being efficient or quick isn't necessarily the best thing for the club.'

World Cup winner's day at Rangers with old schoolmate a ‘dream come true'
In doing so, Broughshane man Rock reunited with winger Ross McCausland both of whom attended the same primary and secondary schools. Over the weekend, 24-year-old Rock teamed up with Gurney to create history with the pair beating Wales 10-9 in a dramatic Final in Frankfurt for Northern Ireland's first triumph in the World Cup of Darts. It was a sensational performance from the duo which has been lauded in their home country and beyond. Before Rock's heroics in Germany, he took part in a different sporting challenge prior to the 2024/25 football season finishing with leading darts manufacturer Target Darts and Rangers FC joining forces for a fun day. Testing their skills against passionate Rangers fan Rock, who also supports Ballymena United, and 2018 PDC World Champion Rob Cross were goalkeepers Jack Butland, Liam Kelly and Mason Munn plus McCausland and Bailey Rice. McCausland and Munn are, of course, from Northern Ireland with the former a senior international and the latter hoping to be in the future. All were involved in a nine-dart challenge, a 501 face-off with Team Rock defeating Team Cross and the footballers took on the darts players in a 'First to Three Bullseye v Crossbar showdown'. The twist was that Rock and Cross had to hit the bar and the Rangers aces had to hit the bullseye. Josh proved to be accurate with a ball as well, hitting the crossbar three times to win the challenge. 'It was a dream come true. I've been a Rangers fan all my life and obviously seeing Jack, Liam and all, what an experience,' said Rock. 'When I was standing outside the gates, I was shaking like a leaf because I've been a big fan all my life. It was great.' On McCausland, who is two years younger, the World Cup winner revealed: 'I'm very friendly with Ross. We went to the exact same primary school and exact same high school. Obviously I chose my path and he chose his path. It was good to see Ross again.' Rangers goalkeeper Butland said: 'I've known Josh for a long time and I met Rob a few years back as well. I've always liked my darts and to be able to do something like this especially with Josh being such a big Rangers fan it was a really good day.'
