Pope Leo XIV Has Made Trading Card History

Yahoo13-05-2025

White smoke billowed from the top of the Vatican last week, signaling the election and imminent arrival of a new pope. The announcement proved to be historic, as Pope Leo XIV emerged as the first American pope in history.
The Chicago-born pope is still less than a week into his papacy, but he also made history in another unexpected space: the trading card market.
The Topps NOW card commemorating Pope Leo XIV's election is now the highest-selling non-sports card in the program's history. 133,535 copies of the card sold during its limited release window from Thursday through Sunday.
The recipients of the cards will now wait to see if they've received special numbered refractor versions - Gold Foil to 50, Orange Foil to 25, Red Foil to five and the 1 of 1 FoilFractor.
After selling more than 100,000 copies, the card will receive even more exclusive variants with rarities of 99, 50, 25, 10, five and a 1 of 1 Superfractor.
Another special 'White Smoke' variant of the card will be limited to just 267 copies, in tribute to Leo XIV being elected as the 267th pontiff.
The Topps NOW program began in 2016, and offers collectors the opportunity to hunt cards associated with special events. Cards are only available for a limited time - usually a few days - giving fans the chance to select cards during historic or significant moments.
588,035 copies of an Olympic basketball card featuring LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant were sold last year, as collectors sought an ultra-exclusive 1 of 1 card featuring signatures from all three players.
More fans purchased 653,737 copies of a card commemorating Shohei Ohtani's historic 50/50 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers last October. The chase was once again fueled by an extremely valuable 1 of 1 card featuring a personal autograph from Ohtani.
The new pope may be featured on a baseball card, but he was also a part of baseball history. After his election, historians combed through footage to find that Leo XIV - born Robert Prevost - attended at least one game during the 2005 World Series.
To date, it's the last time the Chicago White Sox have won the most prestigious prize in baseball. We'll see if his election brings the team good fortune.

LeBron: This year's NBA Finals feature a great matchup for true basketball fans

LeBron: This year's NBA Finals feature a great matchup for true basketball fans This year's NBA Finals, at least at first glance, isn't exactly a marquee matchup. The Los Angeles Lakers, yet again, aren't involved, and neither are teams such as the Golden State Warriors or Boston Celtics, both of which have large and loyal fan bases. For a little while, it appeared that the New York Knicks, who obviously play in the nation's biggest media market, had a real shot at getting to the championship series. But the Indiana Pacers knocked them out of the Eastern Conference finals to meet the Oklahoma City Thunder for all the marbles. However, for true fans of basketball and students of the game, this is at least a somewhat attractive championship matchup, as both teams excel at the basics of the game. Oklahoma City has gotten lots of praise for its defense, which some have described as being historically great, while the Pacers feature a relentless fast break and an underrated defense of their own. On a recent episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast, Lakers superstar LeBron James outlined why this championship series is a good one for those who truly love basketball. 'So we have this Indiana-OKC situation and these are two great teams,' James said. 'And if you are a basketball fan and you really love our game, you can learn so much from watching the way both of those teams play. Yes, I understand you have your favorite players, you have your favorite colors, or whatever the case may be that drags you to it. And I understand. There is something about that. But if we're just talking about the purity of the game and the sport, these are two teams that play the game the right way. And you love to see it.' Both teams in the NBA Finals feature plenty of depth. Oklahoma City, in particular, has laughed in the face of the orthodox thinking that a team must tighten down to an eight-man rotation in the playoffs. Head coach Mark Daigneault has regularly given nine or even 10 men meaningful playing time during the playoffs, and only two of his players — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams — have averaged over 30 minutes a game. The Pacers, who are coached by Rick Carlisle, have also played nine or 10 men throughout the postseason. This willingness to maximize bench players has allowed both teams to maintain a high-energy style of play on both ends of the floor. On the other hand, Lakers head coach JJ Redick only seemed to trust seven of his players in the first round versus the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played only five men throughout the second half of Game 4, which led plenty of people to criticize him. The Pacers currently lead the series two games to one after taking Game 3, 116-107, on Wednesday. Game 4 will take place on Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

But the Light Blues' face a battle to land the £5million-rated star as they prepare for his signature with the Swiss champions - who are looking to make the deal permanent despite not holding an option to buy. BaZ report it is "unclear" if Basel will be able to secure a return and meeting the valuation - leaving the door open for a move to Ibrox. Largie Ramazani Reports in Spain suggest Leeds United's Largie Ramazani is a target for the Light Blues' this summer - just a year on from his £10million move to Elland Road from Almeria. Advertisement And former Leeds' goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to cut their losses with the winger, telling MOT Leeds News: "He's struggled to get in the side this season and I think at times, to his detriment, he's been an impact player off the bench. And I think that's maybe how the manager sees him. "And if they can get better than what they've got, which is what they have to do to stay in the Premier League, he could be one that's allowed to leave. 'He had a little spell of games, didn't he, in the Championship, but didn't play regularly, week in and week out. And he may be one where Leeds need to cut their cloth accordingly. He may be one that's allowed to move on.' Cyriel Dessers The striker has already revealed he has interest from Greece this summer - but while on international duty he has set himself the goal of scoring more for Rangers. Cyriel Dessers When asked about his lack of recent caps for Nigeria, he said: 'I'm not the one making the choices. So, the only thing I can do is to perform well and score goals at my club … to ensure that I'm ready to be called up. Advertisement 'Once I'm called upon, I should be able to show what I can do for the team. Advertisement Director of football Richard Montague says Swansea remains hopeful Harry Darling will sign a new deal with the club - despite reports that Norwich City are leading the race for the soon-to-be free agent. He told Wales Online: 'The ball is very much in Harry's court. "We made him what we thought was a very strong offer and I believe he would think is a very strong offer. Jamie Vardy It would be a landmark signing for the new owners - and Rangers are said to be among the club chasing Jamie Vardy after his Leicester City exit. The signing race for the 38-year-old appears to have lost a club - with Wrexham transfer consultant Les Reed telling the i: "Let's take an equivalent of Jamie Vardy. Advertisement "Everyone thinks he's out of contract, there's no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You're talking about players who are on £140,000 a week. "We are a million miles away from that. There is a certain level of Premier League player who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get closer to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham." Vaclav Cerny sees sensational Rangers form kill hopes of permanent move as mega fee and eye-watering wage revealed

Rangers' faint hopes of persuading Vaclav Cerny into an Ibrox return look set to be blown out of the water by megabucks offers abroad. The Czech ace was one of the few Rangers players who could hold his head high last term after contributing 18 goals and nine assists during his 12-month loan stint. Advertisement But that sensational form is set to price the Wolfsburg wideman out of a permanent switch to Glasgow. And continental sources have told Record Sport that Cerny has a range of bids from across Europe that could see him bank an eye-watering salary of up to 3.5million euros a year. Record Sport understands those kinds of figures will put him out of Rangers' price range, even with the £20million kitty set to be injected into the Light Blues' coffers by the club's new American owners. Advertisement Cerny must now decide his next step, with his German parent club keen to recoup the £8million they spent signing the former Ajax kid from Dutch side FC Twente two years ago. Turkish outfit Trabzonspor are leading the way having made initial enquires but will face competition from compatriots Besiktas plus a number of clubs in Spain. Vaclav Cerny fights for the ball with Athletic Bilbao's Spanish defender Inigo Lekue Speaking earlier this month, however, Cerny admitted his future is still to be decided. He said: "I still have no idea where I will be playing next season. "The only thing I know is that I am returning to Wolfsburg because the loan was without an option. I have a contract there for two more years. Advertisement "There will be time for a club future after the national team. "I am a regular player at Wolfsburg . The club does not have a coach yet. Of course, I have some preliminary agreements, or I know what is planned for me. "I would like to get the most out of a successful season. Contact (with Wolfsburg) has taken place, we all want to know where we stand. It has become clear what they expect from me, what I expect from them. "I have received a training plan for the summer and we are moving forward."
