Mumbai: For the first time in the city, a high-tech sports rehabilitation centre will be established in the civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel.
The 15,000-square-foot facility will have advanced machinery to help people who sustain sports-related injuries. Machines for gait analysis and training, muscle testing and training, as well as aqua treadmills, will be available for advanced rehabilitation under one roof.
"This facility will come up on the 12th floor of our high-rise building and will be a turnkey project costing approximately Rs 20 crore," said KEM Hospital Dean Dr Sangeeta Ravat, adding that the bhoomipujan was conducted on Monday morning. The centre could be operational by Aug.
Funding for the centre came from Vijaylaxmi Poddar of Balkrishna Industries (BKT), which a couple of years back donated a robotic arm to the KEM Hospital's orthopaedic department. "This centre will be one of its kind in western India, making Seth G S Medical College and KEM Hospital one of only six elite centres in the country dedicated to sports injuries and rehabilitation," said Dr Mohan Desai, who heads the hospital's orthopaedic department. While four of the old centres are in public hospitals, one is in a private hospital.

"The KEM centre will be a sports science laboratory allowing for motion analysis, arthroscopy, as well as rehabilitation. We will be able to conduct motion analysis for runners, cricketers, jumpers, among others," said assistant professor and sports medicine specialist Dr Roshan Wade, who will manage the centre.
He said there are many sportsmen at the local level who cannot afford five-star hospitals and their expensive rehabilitation packages. Many have ligament tears and knee injuries that could end their careers. "Our centre will cater to such young underprivileged patients and allow them to return to sports, if possible," added Dr Wade.
There are also plans to introduce post-graduate courses on sports medicine from KEM Hospital once the centre is fully operational.

Arielle shared that the energy in the stadium during the Super Bowl LIX was electric Arielle shared about her Super Bowl LIX experience, 'It was truly great to be in New Orleans, and there were so many Eagles fans. There were definitely more Eagles fans than Chiefs fans. As a dancer, getting to perform at the Super Bowl is indescribable. You work your whole life to be a dancer, and to perform as a dancer at the Super Bowl is such an accolade unto itself. The energy in the stadium was so electric, it's something I will never forget. Action against pvt hosp for promoting free hysterectomy
Jaipur: The Union Ministry of Health has directed the state health department to take action against a private hospital in Udaipur for allegedly using a social media platform to encourage free hysterectomy. Officials said that the hospital's activities violated guidelines designed to discourage the unnecessary removal of the uterus for profit. The hospital produced reels for social media, thereby flouting the Centre's norms. The ministry's guidelines emphasised the importance of adhering to regulations that prevent hospitals from promoting surgical procedures for financial gain. "It has come to the notice of this directorate that this hospital is doing awareness generation by blog on free hysterectomy in their hospital. In this regard, it is informed that this directorate is working towards finalising guidelines to avoid unnecessary hysterectomy, and a committee was formed to finalise alternative treatment guidelines and develop awareness-generating materials to avoid unnecessary hysterectomy. However, the blog by the hospital is contradictory to these guidelines. Take strict necessary action against this hospital," Amita Bali Vohra, DDG, Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Toyota Done It Again? There are also reports of potential coercion for financial benefits under health insurance schemes and concerns pertaining to the lack of information provided to women on side effects, says the guidelines to prevent unnecessary hysterectomies issued by the Ministry of Health. With Olympic dreams, ambitious Yash heads to Barcelona
Panaji: Yash Fadte has returned home after a successful four-year stint in the US, where he graduated from the University of Rochester, led them to its first Hoehn Cup, and won the Skillman Award, which recognised his sportsmanship and skill throughout his college career. Had the squash star accepted an internship offer and subsequently taken up the job, he could have stayed back and lived a comfortable life. A scholarship at Harvard was also turned down. Instead, he opted for the grind of professional squash with the dream of returning to the US, for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. 'Squash is my life, my big goal, and I cannot keep this on hold,' Yash told TOI recently. 'I can take up a job even later in my life.' The 23-year-old's big aim is to take part in the Olympics when squash makes its debut at the biggest sporting spectacle in sports. That's three years from now, and to help him move swiftly towards the goal, the four-time Asian junior medallist is moving to Barcelona. Yash will be based at Barcelona Global Squash, one of Europe's leading squash academies. 'I think it will help me a great deal since the world's best players all train there. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alarma con cerradura inteligente gratis en Badajoz, instalación en un día Securitas Direct Alarma Ver oferta Undo It's in central Europe, so it's easier for me to travel everywhere and take part in international tournaments. Playing against top players will improve my game,' said Yash. Barcelona Global Squash is recognised as an attractive training destination for young players wishing to make the transition to the Professional Squash Association (PSA) world tour or young professionals already competing on the international circuit who are looking for a professional framework to move their game forward. 'I understand that making it to the Olympics won't be easy, but I don't want to be left with regrets. If I fail, no problem. I want to give it my best shot,' said Yash. As a junior, Yash has won the US Open, French Open, and won medals four times at the Asian championships. Olympics, though, is a different game altogether, with the world's best players vying for a spot. It won't be easy, particularly for someone who is only beginning to compete against the top-ranked players. 'A lot of the players who I was up against as a junior are doing well (in the seniors category) and that provides me hope,' said Yash. India is among the top eight countries in squash. For a place at the Olympics, Yash will face stiff competition at home itself with stars like Ramit Tandon, Abhay Singh, Velavan Senthilkumar and Veer Chotrani, all in the top five. 'Most of India's top squash players are backed by their state govts, industrial houses, or sports foundations. We have no such support. Even state govt has done little to help our cause. If govt just clears what is due to us, or delivers on the promises made in the state assembly, we will be in a much stronger position,' said Yash's father, Dilip, a former sportsperson who played Ranji Trophy matches for Goa, as well as county cricket in England. The assurance in the state legislative assembly was made by chief minister Pramod Sawant in 2020. 'We will consider 10 sportspersons every year (for financial assistance). The case of Yash Fadte will be considered,' Sawant had said while speaking on the congratulatory motion tabled by Tivim MLA Nilkant Halarnkar. Yash has not received a penny. In fact, he wasn't even considered for SAG's scheme for 'achieving excellence in sports at international level' that has a grant of Rs 30 lakh. 'It's now or never,' said Dilip.
