
Marine heatwave: UK sea temperatures soar after exceptionally warm Spring
Temperatures in the seas around the UK and Ireland have soared in the past week with some areas now 4C warmer than normal, with potential implications for marine life and people going swimming.The heatwave is most intense off the west coast of Ireland as well as pockets off the coasts of Cornwall and Devon, according to scientists at the National Oceanography Centre and the Met Office.Sea temperatures in April and the first half of May were the highest recorded during those months since monitoring began 45 years ago.Climate change is causing oceans to warm around the globe and is making marine heatwaves like this one more likely.
Scientists expect 2025 to be one of the hottest years on record for air temperatures."It's super intense at the moment. The marine heatwave has really soared this week," says Dr Ségolène Berthou at the Met Office.Dr Zoe Jacobs, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre, first noticed the unusual marine temperatures a few weeks ago. She found that pockets of the UK had been coming in and out of a mild heatwave since late 2024. That heat intensified and spread in March and has now surged.A marine heatwave is defined as sea temperatures that exceed the seasonal threshold for more than five consecutive days. In the UK the marine heatwave threshold for May is 11.3C. On 19 May the average sea surface temperature reached 12.69C.The entire west coast of the UK is now about 2.5C above average. A large portion of Scottish waters are 2-3C warmer than usual for the time of year.
"It started in the North Sea and the Celtic Sea. Now the North Sea has cooled down a bit but the west of Ireland is extremely hot," says Dr Barthou.One of warmest Springs on record is driving the surge, as high temperatures and weak winds warm the top layer of the ocean.Marine heatwaves in the UK are thought to be a relatively new phenomenon but they are expected to increase in frequency and intensity.It is still a bit of a mystery how exactly they will affect marine life, but the signs so far are not good.
"The interesting thing is that this started in winter and spring, when most people assume marine heatwaves are only in summer," says Dr Jacobs.People swimming off the west coast of the UK and Ireland may notice the warmer temperatures, although the waters are still cooler than at their peak in late summer.The worst impacts on species are likely to have been avoided for now because the temperatures have not gone above the upper limit that marine life can tolerate, explains Dr Jacobs.But it may be disrupting species' breeding patterns and could bring an influx of jellyfish that like warmer waters, including the huge barrel jellyfish, to seas and beaches.It could also cause harmful algae to grow out of control, creating wide patches of green algae that can poison other life.
Previous heatwaves have caused harmful blooms of algae and in 2018 caused mass mortality among mussels.In 2023, jellyfish sightings increased by 32% following a marine heatwave with temperatures 3-4C above average.The heat could also encourage different fish to move into UK waters, including the bluefin tuna, potentially increasing the amount of fish to catch.
Normally marine heatwaves last around two weeks, so scientists are surprised at how long this one is persisting."It is exceptional. We are about two and half months in, which is very long," says Dr Barthou.Higher sea temperatures can push up land temperatures too, as sea breezes carry the heat off the ocean.That happened in May 2024 when a short marine heatwave contributed "significantly" to above-average land temperatures, according to the Met Office.
In some parts of the world - including Australia, the US and the Pacific - marine heatwaves can destroy coral reefs or local fisheries, as well as vital seagrass meadows.The UK is usually more protected from these impacts because overall the waters are cooler. But scientists still don't know very much about them and have a lot more to discover.A recent study led by Dr Jacobs found that the UK hotspots are the southern North Sea and the English channel, where heatwaves can last longer than other areas of the country. Oceans have absorbed 90% of the excess heat created by humans burning fossil fuels, and as a result have warmed overall by 1C."Before we started having this exceptional weather this spring, the waters were already in a hotter state," says Dr Barthou.In the North Atlantic, sea surface temperatures have been increasing by around 0.3C per decade over the last 40 years, according to the Met Office.The long spell of warm, dry weather is expected to break slightly this weekend."The ocean lags behind the atmosphere by at least a few days, so it might be that into next week we might start to see the ocean cooling off," says Dr Jacobs.But she says that this might be just a "temporary dip" as the longer-range forecast suggests the weather will warm up again.

Ireland has warmest spring in 126 years
Spring this year had the highest average temperature ever experienced in 126 years of records held by Met Eireann, it has said. This year marked the first spring that was more than two degrees higher than the 20th century average for the same period. Overall, it was the sunniest spring on record, with most stations recording highest values for total hours of sunshine in spring, according to the meteorological service. The season's highest temperature was reported at Athenry in Co Galway on Wednesday with a temperature of 25.9C – the highest daily maximum spring temperature in 15 years of records. Spring 2025 was also relatively dry, provisionally ranking as the 16th driest since records began in 1941, and the driest since 2020. As a result of the warmer, sunnier and calmer conditions, a marine heatwave developed off the west coast of Ireland through April and May with sea surface temperatures reaching over 2C warmer than average in some coastal areas, and up to 4C warmer than average in offshore areas. The latest Met Eireann statistics show that Ireland had its warmest and sunniest meteorological spring on record this year. Blocking high pressure dominated through most of the season, bringing a lot of sunshine with it, it added. It said that this, along with predominantly easterly winds due to the high-pressure systems often setting up just to the north of Ireland and the UK, led to sea surface temperatures to the south and west of Ireland reaching record high levels during April and May. All three months saw air temperatures well above average at the majority of stations, leading to all but a few stations in the east having their warmest spring on record. March was mild, dry and sunny, with high pressure dominating through most of the month with weak steering currents aloft, it added. April was warm and sunny overall. The first half of the month was dominated by high pressure to the north bringing a dry easterly airflow. The second half of the month saw a wetter spell for a couple of weeks, where Atlantic low pressure dominated and brought several spells of heavy rain, especially to the Midlands, South and East. It settled down again towards the end of the month with high pressure bringing record warmth for April. May continued the theme of high-pressure dominance for much of the month. Blocking high pressure set up just to the north brought an easterly airflow with plenty of sunshine. The settled spell broke for the last week of the season, with Atlantic low pressure breaking through and bringing spells of rain or showers. Twenty-three of 25 stations had their warmest spring on record. Only Dunsany in Co Meath had its second warmest and Dublin Airport had its joint third warmest. Oak Park in Co Carlow, Moore Park, Co Cork, Athenry, Co Galway and Casement, Co Dublin recorded their warmest spring on record for the third consecutive years, while Roches Point, Co Cork and Markree, Co Sligo had their warmest spring for the second year in a row.

UK farmers lost £1bn in arable income after extreme wet weather, data show
UK farmers lost £1.19 billion in income from arable crops last year following the extreme wet and stormy weather, official figures show. The Environment Department's (Defra) farmer income figures, released on Thursday, showed that while the overall UK farm income was up from £6.1 billion to £7.7 billion between 2023 and 2024, income from the main arable crops fell by £1.19 million. This was driven by significant drop from barley, wheat, barley and oilseed rape, albeit slightly offset by gains from potatoes, according to an analysis of the figures by the the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think tank. The falling incomes can be attributed to the third-worst harvest on record last year, caused by wet weather in key planting periods, as well as the ongoing fall in cereal and oilseed prices following the peaks of 2022. It comes amid warnings that farmers could be facing another terrible harvest this year following the hottest spring on record and the driest conditions in decades. The ECIU said climate change is already having a 'devastating' impact on farmers, food security and shopping bills, and the recent extremes of heat will continue to have a negative impact on harvests. Tom Lancaster, land, food and farming analyst at the ECIU, said: 'Farmers are now counting the costs of climate change, with over a billion pounds knocked off arable farm incomes following the extreme wet winter that we saw in 2024. 'This lost income hits the sector just as the same farmers are having to contend with a record-breaking warm and dry spring, that is likely to hit this year's harvest too. 'Increasingly extreme weather is testing the financial resilience of farming to breaking point and jeopardising our food security, just as reports suggest that the spending review next week may reduce the funding available for the government's new green farming schemes.' Farmers and environmentalists have warned that cutting sustainable farming funding in the spending review next week would hit efforts to restore nature, make farming resilient to climate shocks, and support rural communities. Martin Lines, chief executive of the Nature Friendly Farming Network, said this year's arable harvest was 'on a knife edge' and highlighted the need for funding to build resilience. Nature-friendly farming measures such as ensuring healthy soils and boosting natural predators of crop pests can help make agriculture more resilient to climate extremes, experts say. Mr Lines, who farms in Cambridgeshire, said: 'Months of dry weather have left my crops stressed, with their yield potential now capped even if we get a good bit of rain. 'This is what farming in a changing climate looks like. 'It's wreaking havoc with my ability to plan and many farmers are now facing yet more financial losses this harvest, just as support for nature-friendly farming is being called into question. 'Nature-friendly farming is the backbone of rural resilience. Cutting funding now won't save money; it will cost us all in the long run,' he warned. The UK has experienced its hottest spring in records dating back to the 19th century, and its driest in more than 50 years with rainfall at just 40% of average levels. England suffered the driest three months from March to May in more than 100 years, Met Office figures show. The north-west of England is already in drought, and the Environment Agency has warned of the risk of more widespread drought without sustained rainfall. ECIU analysis estimates the production of the main arable crops – wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape – could once again be near all-time lows. The assessment draws on the most recent crop development survey from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), which identified a major decline in crop conditions due to the dry spring, reducing yield potential despite recent rainfall. It looks at three scenarios, reflecting what might happen with rainfall in the coming weeks. If crop condition is maintained at current levels, yields would be in line with last year, leading to a worse harvest than 2024, due to fewer acres of oilseed rape and spring barley planted outweighing an increase in wheat, and making 2025 the second-worst harvest in records dating back to the 1980s. If rain helps crop conditions improve and yields recover to the 10-year average, the UK harvest would be the seventh-worst on record, the ECIU estimates. And if crop condition continues to decline and yields are equivalent to 2020 – the worst harvest so far since the detailed records began in 1984 – this year could become the worst harvest on record. Mr Lancaster said: 'Although it's too early to tell what the true impact will be of this record-breaking dry spring, we know enough to conclude that it will have had a negative impact.' He said scientists were clear that warmer springs were a feature of climate change, making the impact of a dry spring more severe, while extreme wet winters were also being fuelled by rising global temperatures. 'In this volatile context, the outcome of the spending review next week will be a crucial moment for farming in this country, and whether the Government realises what's at stake for UK farming and food security in a rapidly changing climate,' Mr Lancaster said. Farming minister Daniel Zeichner said: 'Farming incomes are on the rise – credit to the hard work of our farmers keeping the country fed and protecting the long-term food security our country needs. 'We're determined to build on this progress – backing farmers to meet future challenges, strengthen food security, and support thriving rural communities. 'That's why we're investing £5 billion – the largest-ever budget for sustainable food production – and have appointed Baroness Minette Batters to recommend reforms that put more money back in farmers' pockets, as part of our plan for change.'

Its outlook for Saturday into Monday reads: "Breezy on Saturday with widespread heavy, perhaps thundery showers, interspersed with sunny spells.
