A former Premier League footballer has apologised on live TV for underestimating Wrexham's potential to escape from League One.
Ex-Aston Villa and West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker shared scepticism about Phil Parkinson's team securing a remarkable third consecutive promotion at the beginning of the 2024-25 season. The CBS Sports pundit was later left red-faced as Wrexham clinched automatic promotion to the Championship in April.

Reo-Coker has now extended his apologies to the club's supporters after the Red Dragons finished second in League One. Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer urged the 41-year-old to make amends during the American networks' broadcast of the League Two play-off final between AFC Wimbledon and Walsall.

Reo-Coker said: "I didn't think Wrexham would get promoted again. I didn't think it would be a [case of] back-to-back-to-back. I apologise Wrexham fans. Yes, you proved me wrong."
Despite external doubts, Palmer disclosed that Wrexham's higher-ups held a quiet confidence about gaining promotion from League One before the season. However, their optimism was not broadly publicised as they aimed to handle expectations.
Palmer said: "I think a lot of people didn't expect us to do it. I think we were tipped to be around mid-table. I get that, but that's the beauty of football. We achieved something really special, and it was a privilege to be a part of it.

"A lot's changed at the football club. The gaffer kept it in house and said that if we can keep doing what we're doing, he would accept nothing less than automatics. That was the demand he put on us, and we kept that quiet.
"But as it came to the end of the season, that was the only option. We did it, and we created history. It was an amazing moment."

Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have reiterated their ambition to take the club to the Premier League following their recent promotion.

Welcome to Wrexham is back on Disney+ for a fourth season. Fans can watch the series with a £4.99 monthly plan, or get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront.
But Reo-Coker believes that reaching such heights next season is premature, labelling the Championship as "different gravy" compared to League One.

Palmer, however, isn't dismissing the prospect of a remarkable fourth consecutive promotion, drawing attention to the precedent set by Luton and Ipswich. Both teams have previously managed successive promotions from League One to the Premier League.
The 33-year-old is also confident that Reynolds and McElhenney will invest the necessary funds to ensure Wrexham are contenders in the next division during the summer transfer window.

"I know doing four is ridiculous and I'm not saying that," Palmer said. "But if you look at Luton, did they do that? Didn't they go back-to-back? We've got backing where the club wants to go again.
"I'm not trying to put pressure on the lads and I should probably stop talking, but all I'm trying to say is, we could take inspiration from Luton and Ipswich.
"The gaffer and the owners are going to invest and improve the squad, there's no doubt about that. If you say that you're riding the wave then maybe [it could happen]."

Nathan Jones signs new contract to end Cardiff City links as options now appear to point one way

Nathan Jones signs new contract to end Cardiff City links as options now appear to point one way Cardiff City's managerial search has now seen one man officially ruled out Charlton boss Nathan Jones (Image: Kevin Hodgson/MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images ) Nathan Jones has signed a new long-term contract with Charlton to end all links with Cardiff City. Jones, a boyhood Bluebirds fan, has been heavily linked with the vacant post at Cardiff City Stadium over the past 10 days but has now agreed fresh terms with the club he has just taken back up to the Championship. ‌ The 52-year-old's name was thrown into the mix following the Addicks' play-off final win but a move for the Rhondda-born man always looked complicated due to the Wembley win and the south London club's reluctance to let their manager leave. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here. ‌ Jones said in a statement on Friday morning: "I'm very proud and delighted. "I still had three years left but for the club to come to me and want to continue that journey meant a lot to me because it's a club that I love. "We've just taken one big step, but that's only one big step, we still have a long way to go to achieve our goals and I'm glad that I'll continue to work towards that." "Nathan has been a key part of that unity and our success on the pitch this season means we are ahead of schedule in our long-term planning for the club. Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones (Image: Steven Paston/PA Wire. ) ‌ "Nathan understands the values of this club and shares our ambition for where we want to go. We're thrilled to have him on board for the long term.' Managing director James Rodwell added: "Nathan has done an incredible job since returning to the club last year. His leadership has been crucial in developing a culture and structure that has enabled us to progress. His vision, energy and commitment to the club are clear to see, and we're delighted he'll be leading us forward. "This long-term commitment enables us to plan, creates stability and allows us to develop a strategy that can only benefit the football club." Bookmakers have placed the 34-year-old as strong favourite for the role, ahead of the likes of Brian Barry-Murphy, Des Buckingham and Ian Evatt. Ramsey has one year to run on his playing contract and although handing a rookie the reins in a brutal division is a risk, he will no doubt have a galvanising effect on a fractured fanbase desperate for a return to successful ways.

Who is the most important person at a football club?

Until not so long ago, that might usually have felt like a pointless appointed, the manager was assumed to have command - within the parameters, financial or otherwise, set by his employers, anyway. The manager set the tactical policies, enforced discipline, selected or at least had right of veto over new signings, and everyone on the football side of the club was therefore theoretically working to their was the manager's way, or no way, until the day the board called their game moved on, at least at the higher levels. Perhaps the football department of a Premier League club is now just too big for one man to manage it all. For a while, replacing "manager" on the office door with "head coach" might have felt like an affectation, but now the head coach position often appears one of a suite of job titles given equal billing on a club's organisational the head coach is the only one required to front up in public on a regular basis to account for his club's form, when they speak you can get a feeling about whether their stock is rising or falling internally. This may not indicate internal conflict. But it often indicates the degree of influence the head coach is about to hiring him to rescue the team from a perilous situation last December, it now seems that Wolves are ready to line up behind Vitor Pereira, making him first-among-equals on the football side, just as Nuno undoubtedly was when Wolves first drafted him in eight years suggestion that the new technical director - not sporting director, spot the difference - will be a colleague of Pereira in his most recent job points to reshuffle has left Matt Hobbs without a seat, which could be considered a harsh verdict, depending where you start from. Over the past two years he was, at various times, praised for finding Gary O'Neil and blamed for finding Gary O'Neil. The signings in January that helped Pereira fix their season were on Hobbs' watch, and make for a positive final there were a few moments during his tenure as sporting director when Hobbs was the most important - or at least most influential - person at Wolves. But for now it seems the board have heard the supporters' praise for Pereira, read the room and fallen in behind Wolves updates throughout the summer on BBC Radio WM Sport from 18:00 on weeknights

Man Utd to make final take it or leave it Bryan Mbeumo transfer offer

Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo is keen on a move to Old Trafford, but his club knocked back Manchester United's first transfer bid for the Cameroon international Manchester United are ready to submit an improved bid of £60million for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo – but it is likely to be their final offer. United had an initial bid of £55m - £45m plus £10m in add-ons – rejected by Brentford, but are set to test their resolve to keep Mbeumo with a fresh offer of £55m, plus £5m in bonuses. ‌ Brentford's valuation of Mbeumo starts at £60m, but United are hoping their improved offer of that figure will be accepted by the west London club and allow them to complete the signing of the 25-year-old. ‌ Mbeumo has already indicated his desire to join United, with personal terms of around £200,000-a-week said to have already been agreed over a five-year contract with an option for an extra year. The only stumbling block is the fee for Cameroon international Mbeumo, who would be United's second signing of the summer, following the £62.5m arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. United boss Ruben Amorim is desperate to improve his attacking options, after his side managed just 44 goals in the Premier League last season – the second lowest of a non-relegated side. Mbeumo scored 20 goals for Brentford last season, as well as providing eight assists, and his arrival – on the back of Cunha – would herald a significant upgrade to United's blunt attack. United missed out on a Champions League place for next season – and up to £100million in extra revenue - after losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham in Bilbao. ‌ But the absence of European football next season has not put off the likes of Cunha and Mbeumo from wanting to join United, with the expectation a deal for the latter will soon be agreed. United will raise the revenue for their summer sales with a clear-out of their existing squad, with Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia all set to leave. The hope among the United hierarchy is that player sales can raise up to £150m this summer, to add to the estimated £150m transfer budget already at Amorim's disposal.
