'The immigration speech Keir Starmer would have made, if he told you the truth'

Daily Mirror12-05-2025

Today we publish a White Paper on immigration. It's not a law and it's not about immigration, but I want you to think of it as a crackdown. It might even be a crackdown, if the White Paper ever becomes a Bill, and the Bill ever becomes law, and it comes into force at some point before we all die of rage. Let's pretend that's what is happening.
It is a strategy absolutely central to my plan for change, which is to do nothing you could really complain about too loudly. I saw what that did to Boris, and Liz, and Rishi, and by God you'll never catch me out doing something so dangerous as changing things. I'm going to change all that.
The first thing I'm going to change is the truth. I'm going to start using three-word slogans like "take back control" and "smash the gangs" and before you know it, it's like we never changed governments at all. There. Doesn't that feel better.
The Tories weren't Tory enough. Frankly, they weren't Brexity enough. That's why I'm going to be tougher than they were on immigration, axing the care visa, tightening up the need for English comprehension, doubling the length of time it takes to be British. Immigration, immigration, immigration. Tough, tough, tough. Immigration. Tough. Crackdown. Is this thing on, Morgan?
People who think they know about politics will say this is all about the local election results and the surge in support for Reform. But this is what I truly believe. Today, at least. How I ended up in the Labour Party is a mystery to me too, but here we are.
With the Tory vote collapsing across the Shires, clearly the wisest strategy is to be a bit more Tory. So I will tell you the nation is being torn apart and you're right to be worried about immigrants taking your jobs and don't worry I'll smash them for you, and I absolutely won't tell you the truth. Perhaps I should? I don't know. Someone tell me what to do.
I could be really honest with you, and say that the reason you've no jobs is the technological revolution which no government has had the wit to keep up with. I could say that you have higher prices and a stagnant economy because you have been consistently failed by those in power.
Politicians have to buy their way into government with airtime and social media ads and nice suits from friends, so we climb into bed with all sorts of wrong'uns. And not always for pleasure. Then when we get in, we're often beholden to them and even if we're not, they have our phone number and our dinner invitations and our ear.
The real cause of immigration is stuff we can't do a damned thing about. We'd like to fix climate change, but it's expensive and if we try the billionaires shout at us. We'd like to tax tech companies, but it's complicated and if we try the billionaires set the troll farms onto us. We'd like to sell arms for wars in far-off places while importing some conflict minerals for a battery industry we don't have, but it has a worrying tendency to drive refugees our way and then the billionaires.... you get the picture.
And who are the most stateless people in the world? Who has the most rapacious thirst for rare metals, and slave labour, and computer servers to store every dime and every post and every pointless picture of your tea? Who drives down the wages and cuts the jobs and automates production because robots are cheaper, who dodges their tax, who ignores borders, who demands government subsidies while giving next to nothing back? Here's a clue. If they arrive on a boat, it's not a small one. It's a massive motherf***er with a helipad and its own submarine.
The billionaires do more than any other individual to cause climate change, to foment wars, to boost or crash economies. Thousands of people rely on Tesla, for example, for jobs worldwide, and their mortgages are all at risk because of one rich incel's bid to make himself the most unpopular person on Earth and tank the share price.
A man who, in normal circumstances, should be fixing photocopiers has splurged eye-watering sums first to get divorced and second to send his improbably-breasted girlfriend on a near-Earth orbit hen night. There are plans to overrun the planet with a clone army of extremely idiotic clever people, because some dips*** thinks that would help. These refugees from normality are the only people to whom border controls do not apply. But I'm not going to say a single word of that publicly, in case Elon sends a tweet or Vicky's Amazon parcel gets dropped en route.
No Prime Minister has ever been brave enough to say that Britain's problems have been caused by the people who run it, and own it, and boss you about. I mean we'll blame the last Prime Minister, and warn you against the next one, but that's as close as we get. Whatever we try to change gets stopped and that's why it's easier to do what I'm doing, and change nothing much at all.
So I've announced a crackdown, but I won't begin it for, ooh, a couple of years. I've said it's tearing us all apart, but the evidence shows we're actually chewing our own leg off. I've said it's not about Nigel but it is, and I'll tell you it's what I believe even though I don't.
When people voted in a Labour government, they voted for change. Not functioning and affordable public services, not solar panels on every house, not taxing billionaires and being more reasonable to each other in general. No, they wanted to change the Labour Party from a bottom-up organisation of people who wanted to make the world a better place into a top-down autocracy that punishes dissent like a mullah with a migraine. They wanted me to ignore the Post Office, the armed forces, Hillsborough Law, and nuclear veterans. So I have.
If I carry on like this for another four years I'll be able to hand the keys of Downing Street over to my friend Nicotine Nigel, who wants to reverse all the changes since 1952 and make Britain racist again. Being honest would make us an island of strangeness in an ocean of lunacy, so let's stick with performative press conferences, appeasing lunatic billionaires, and blaming the wrong migrants for the things they didn't do.

Greta Thunberg's Gaza aid ship diverted by Israeli forces as activist says she was 'kidnapped'

Greta Thunberg has released a video saying she and other activists have been 'intercepted and kidnapped' in international waters. In a distressing video, Greta Thunberg made an urgent plea for assistance, saying that she and fellow activists "have been intercepted and kidnapped" in international waters. The environmental advocate was among 13 activists aboard the Madleen, a vessel under the British flag run by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians. The ship was seized as contact was lost following an interception by Israeli commandos on the Mediterranean Sea, reports the Mirror. ‌ The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel has confirmed the boat was escorted to Ashdod port, situated in the country's southern district, deriding the ship as a "selfie yacht". The ministry stated: "It is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) - a 'selfie yacht'." ‌ Greta, 22, shared a video on X amidst reports of the incident, in which she raises the alarm that she and her companions required immediate support. The Swedish activist fervently expressed: "My name is Greta Thunberg, and I am from Sweden. If you see this video, we are being intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel." She continued with a call to action: "I urge all my friends, family and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible." The footage was reportedly filmed prior to this morning's skirmishes, with activists instructed to avoid mobile phone use and fortunately recorded before they were allegedly confronted with "a white chemical" attack. Reports from the scene indicated some individuals complained of "eyes burning", an event speculated to have occurred in Mediterranean waters. However, at approximately 4:30 am local time, Israeli forces redirected the ship towards Ashdod. Subsequently, a spokesperson for Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement: "With recent reports of a 'celebrities yacht' heading to Gaza, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to clarify the following: The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to unauthorised vessels under a legal naval blockade, consistent with international law. ‌ "The yacht is claiming that it is delivering humanitarian aid. In fact, it is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) - a 'selfie yacht'. "Humanitarian aid is delivered regularly and effectively via different channels and routes, and is transferred through established distribution mechanisms. Over the past two weeks, more than 1,200 aid trucks have entered Gaza from Israel. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed close to 11 million meals directly to civilians in Gaza. "The Gaza maritime zone remains an active conflict area, and Hamas has previously exploited sea routes for terrorist attacks, including the October 7th massacre. Unauthorised attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful, and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts. We call on all actors to act responsibly and to channel humanitarian aid through legitimate, coordinated mechanisms, not through provocation."

The battle of the Channel has been fought

Kemi Badenoch says the Conservative party will take a look at withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), freeing us at a leap and a bound from the tyranny of human rights lawyers. The Tory leader would give Britain the power to deter the cross-Channel influx of asylum seekers, by withdrawing protections from those arriving in Britain without papers. As there is unlikely to be a Conservative government in the foreseeable future, this announcement it's going to have no effect now, or any time soon, on the actual boats. And read the fine print: Badenoch hasn't really even made up her mind; she is going to set up a committee to look into it. In the real world, the boats aren't being stopped, the gangs aren't being smashed and the French judges and police are shrugging.

'Stop passing the buck and help Aberdeen Raac families'

A campaigner fighting for Aberdonians caught up in the Raac housing crisis is pleading with politicians to stop passing the buck over responsibility days before another UK spending review. Torry Raac campaign supporter Raymond Davidson reacted to the blame-game between political leaders in the week the UK Chancellor is under more pressure from the Scottish Government to find funds at Westminster. In the run up to the spending review on Wednesday, SNP and Labour leaders again kept the row going in a series of letters and statements shared with the P&J. Meanwhile in Aberdeen, Balnagask homeowners are trying to convince the city council it already has the money to meet everyone's needs. Mr Davidson said the constant back-and-forth between London and Edinburgh is a distraction. 'It's like a game of pass the parcel to them,' he said. 'No one wants the music to stop and take responsibility, it just keeps going round and round. 'It's as though people don't matter in this. Politicians are playing party-political games.' One of the big problems is what happens to homeowners who bought properties with Raac which is now posing a risk. The council has a 'voluntary acquisition proposal' which would cost more than £12 million to take the homes and demolish them. For those who want to stay, a massive repair bill would fall to them personally. The share could be between £20,000 and £44,000 depending on the size of property. 'Why can't the council provide the lot?' asked Mr Davidson. 'They can spend now whatever Holyrood and Westminster are saying. 'If there's extra money down the line, fine. But that shouldn't stop them now.' A proposal from residents would see people relocated to a cluster of homes which would then be repaired at what campaigners say is a reduced cost to the taxpayer. Councillor Allard, the SNP co-leader in Aberdeen, said the local authority is already getting on with helping Raac residents – but is under no obligation to fully fund private owners. 'By law we don't need to give them anything,' he said. 'Morally, we are helping.' The full cost, regardless of what happens, should involve government help, he added. 'I don't understand why the UK Government will not pay more. It should be like the Grenfell cladding crisis and a UK-wide issue.' In the UK's Scotland Office, Labour MP Ian Murray agreed the council's voluntary purchase scheme must give homeowners 'fair compensation.' But in a letter copied to residents and the P&J, he wrote: 'While I have the utmost sympathy with what you and your neighbours are going through, our powers are limited, given this is an issue devolved to the Scottish Government, which received a record £50bn funding settlement at the Autumn Budget. 'Some of that could – and I believe should – be used to tackle this problem.' Meanwhile, the housing minister in the UK Government said Raac is 'low' in English housing so there will be no additional extra government scheme. This is crucial because if Westminster does spend extra on English housing on Wednesday, it would generate a compensating figure for use in Scotland. In a letter to his Scottish counterpart, Mr Norris said building safety and local government finance are Holyrood's responsibility. 'Any decisions on funding to support building owners to manage Raac are for the Scottish Government and impacted local authorities,' he wrote. The P&J put the UK Government position to the SNP Government. Scottish housing minister Paul McLennan said: 'Raac is a cross-UK problem, and we have been clear from the beginning that it requires a cross-UK solution. 'We have repeatedly called on the UK Government to make available a dedicated Raac remediation fund, which they have unfortunately failed to do. 'We are continuing to call on them to take action – and at next week's spending review the Chancellor has the opportunity to take action to support people affected by Raac, including those in Aberdeen. We will keep up the pressure on the UK Government on behalf of homeowners in Aberdeen and across Scotland.' The P&J asked a spokesman for the prime minister in the Commons last week if any money can be expected on Wednesday. But the spokesman would not disclose any details ahead of the statement.
