Cops probe viral brawl at PJ mall's Songkran celebration
PETALING JAYA: Police have launched an investigation into a brawl that erupted during a Songkran celebration at the 1 Utama Shopping Centre's outdoor car park, after a video of the violent scuffle went viral online.
Although no police reports have been filed by the public, Malay Mail reported that Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'far has directed the Damansara police station chief to file a report on the matter to facilitate the investigation.
The footage, which surfaced yesterday, showed festival-goers from several groups clashing with one another, hurling plastic chairs and barricades, and engaging in physical assaults.
Some individuals were seen wielding makeshift weapons in the chaos.

NRD: Security guards have no authority to demand, scan MyKad
Any action by security guards to request or keep identity cards is against the law and action can be taken, according to NRD. – Malay Mail photo PUTRAJAYA (June 10): Security guards do not have the authority or right to request, hold or scan the identity card (MyKad) of the public, according to the National Registration Department (NRD). NRD in a statement to Bernama said only five categories of officers are allowed to do so under Regulation 7(1), National Registration Regulations 1990, namely NRD officers, police officers, customs officers, military personnel on duty, as well as civil servants authorised by the Director General of National Registration. 'Any action by security guards to request or keep identity cards is against the law and action can be taken,' it said. The NRD also stressed that the use of electronic devices to scan MyKad data is also not allowed, as it is subject to provisions under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. 'Any processing of personal data by private parties is subject to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, which sets out guidelines and obligations to protect individual personal information,' according to the NRD. Bernama contacted NRD to seek clarification on the issue, following a recent viral post on social media about a security guard at a premises who allegedly used an electronic device to scan MyKad. The security guard's action has sparked questions from the public about its legal validity. In a statement yesterday, Rapid Rail said it will fully cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing investigation and liaise with the Taiwanese embassy to ensure appropriate assistance is provided to the victim's family. "We apologise for the difficulties and delays caused to passengers and appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this emergency," it said. The incident reportedly occurred at 5.54pm yesterday and involved a rescue team comprising the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysia Police, and medical personnel from Serdang Hospital. The deceased was taken to Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem examination. MACC gets permision to freeze Na'imah's assets worth GB£132 mln in UK

Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid allowed the ex parte application by the MACC under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001) for investigation under Section 4(1) of the same law. The assets comprise two commercial buildings at St Mary Axe and One Crown Court, three luxury residences at Bryanston Square, Bryanston Mews and Lancaster Gate, two residential units at Gloucester Place and a CAF Bank Limited (UK) bank account allegedly belonging to The Ilham Foundation. Deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, when contacted by reporters, confirmed the matter. On May 22, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said eight investigation papers had been opened based on new information received from external agencies regarding the assets owned by Daim, his family and proxies.
