HC commutes death sentence in child murder case
Jabalpur: The MP high court has commuted the death sentence of a man convicted of abducting and murdering his six-year-old nephew, instead sentencing him to life imprisonment until his last breath.
A division bench of Justice Vivek Agrawal and Justice Dev Narayan Mishra also nullified the life sentence of the co-accused woman in the case.
On March 12, 2019, six-year-old Shivkant Prajapati from Rahikvara village in the Nagod police station area of Satna was kidnapped by his uncle, Anutav.
Co-accused Vibha alias Vidya Prajapati called the child's family, demanding a ransom of Rs 2 lakh. The accused uncle strangled the child to death.
Police filed a charge sheet against the accused in a Nagod court. The Nagod court considered the case as the rarest of the rare and sentenced the accused uncle to death.
Additionally, the co-accused woman was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The case was referred to the high court for confirmation of the death penalty. An appeal was also filed in the HC challenging the sentence.
During the hearing, the bench found that the accused was only 21 years old at the time of the crime. Moreover, the crime was committed for money.
The bench did not consider the incident to fall under the rarest of rare category and annulled the death sentence. Due to a lack of evidence, the bench also overturned the sentence of the co-accused woman.

QR code swapping fraud: Probe team to verify account statements
T'puram: Museum police have requested the banks to share the account statements of the accused in the case registered on the complaint of actor-turned politician Krishna Kumar . It was alleged that the staff of his shop, co-owned by his daughter Diya Krishna Kumar, snatched Rs 69 lakh by swapping the QR scanner for receiving payments from customers. The probe team is also planning to conduct an audit at the shop named 'Oh By Ozy', an imitation jewellery shop near Christ Nagar School, Kowdiar. This will be done with the help of a govt agency to verify the allegations raised. Museum police constituted a special team, headed by station house officer Vimal S, with sub-inspectors Shiju V L and Vpin G S in the team. The bank statements will help police confirm whether the allegation raised by Krishna Kumar is true. As per the complaint, the staff of the shop, Vineetha, Divya and Radhakumar, placed the QR code scanners of their personal bank accounts for receiving payments from customers from July 2024, when Diya and Krishna Kumar were away from the shop. Krishna Kumar presented CCTV visuals at the shop as evidence for the allegation and also the video of the accused admitting to swapping the QR code scanner. Meanwhile, the accused also filed a complaint against Krishna Kumar and Diya, alleging that they were abducted, extorted for money and threatened. After the fraud came to light, Krishna Kumar and Diya held a meeting with the accused to settle the issue. The accused reportedly paid Rs 9 lakh after admitting the crime. "The account statements of the accused are crucial in the case as they will help unfurl the truths. The account statements of Krishna Kumar and Diya are also requested. As per the complaint, the crime took place over a 10-month period from July last year. It means there could be a turnover of Rs 7 lakh per month, and it has to be proved by taking the account statements of Krishna Kumar and Diya," police said.

Vishalgad Urs not held, yet 1,300 devotees went to fort for prayers at dargah
Kolhapur: Around 1,300 devotees visited Vishalgad to offer prayers at Hazrat Peer Malik Rehan's shrine on Sunday. The traditional four-day Urs, scheduled to begin on Sunday, was cancelled following restrictions by the state archaeology department. The Bakrid qurbani proceeded according to Bombay high court guidelines. While the Urs typically draws thousands of attendees, recent campaigns by right-wing organisations against encroachments have led to reduced attendance. The previous year's event was marred by violence over encroachment issues. The animal sacrifice ritual was conducted under strict protocols, requiring enclosed private premises. The area was surrounded by metal sheets to ensure compliance. Devotees from various regions queued early to climb to the fort, presenting identification such as Aadhaar cards for registration. The administration limited visits between 9am and 5pm, prohibiting overnight stays. All 1,300 registered visitors completed their darshan/prayers within the stipulated time. Sub-divisional officer Sameer Shingate, of the Pannala division, said: "Everyone left the fort before 5pm. Police bandobast and scrutiny will remain in place for three more days." Although the dargah trust officials proposed a modest Urs celebration, authorities implemented a complete prohibition. Kolhapur's superintendent of police Yogeshkumar Gupta said the administration has challenged the HC ruling permitting animal sacrifice at the fort in the Supreme Court.
