Iran was prepared to provide assurances to US, Araghchi says

Middle East Eye10 hours ago

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said his country's 'firm conviction not to possess a nuclear weapon'.
'Yet those who are willing to deprive Iran of our right to possess the nuclear programme for peaceful purposes, they have no right to do so,' he added.
Araghchi also said that Iran was 'prepared to provide the necessary assurances to the Americans' during the sixth round of negotiations with the US that was scheduled for today in Oman.
'The previous round of talks, the Americans presented a number of proposals, which were not totally acceptable to us. We presented our response and our viewpoints, and we were supposed to present a counterproposal. Our proposal could have opened doors for an all-out agreement with the Americans,' he said.
Araghchi said Israel opposes reaching a deal between Iran and the US.
'This is a crystal-clear matter. The Zionist entity is not willing to see us reaching an agreement or a diplomatic solution with the United States,' he added.

Iran fires more missiles at Israel

15 June 2025 22:22 Tehran (dpa) Iran has once fired another wave of missiles towards Israel, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reports. A missile alert was sounded in parts of Israel and people took refuge in bunkers. Israel has been attacking Iran since Friday night - including nuclear facilities, defence positions, targets in cities and oil and natural gas fields. Tehran has responded by launching flurries of missiles and drones at Israel. Israel and Iran also launched new waves of airstrikes on Sunday. The Israeli Air Force says it has launched a series of attacks on dozens of targets in western Iran, where surface-to-surface missiles are believed to be stationed.

Iranian strikes expose lack of shelters for Palestinian citizens of Israel, residents say

Palestinian citizens of Israel are having to fend for themselves amid ongoing missile strikes by Iran, with the beleaguered community lacking access to shelters and safe rooms due to discriminatory building policies. On Saturday, four Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed in the predominantly Arab town of Tamra, some 25km east of Haifa, after an Iranian missile unexpectedly struck their residential building. Local residents told Middle East Eye that four Christian women from the same family were killed in the attack, including a mother and her two daughters, aged 13 and 20. Residents said that when the Israeli government instructed Israelis to stay in protected areas as missile alerts sounded, Palestinians in Tamra decided to shelter in place - or they sought safety in groups at the homes of other family members - due to the absence of public shelters and safe rooms. "Most homes in Tamra, and those in predominantly Arab towns, lack shelters," Muhammed Soboh, a Tamra resident, told MEE. "I live in the neighbourhood where the rockets fell," he said. Before Saturday's strikes, Tamra's residents had repeatedly complained of the lack of bomb shelters in the area, noting that almost no homes were equipped with a safe room - despite such facilities being mandatory in all new properties built after 1991. Other residents told MEE that despite the town being home to more than 35,000 people, there were no public shelters either. Meanwhile, according to reports, the nearby settlement of Mitzpe Aviv boast at least 13 public shelters for its 1,100 residents. "Arab homes and residents are directly exposed to danger from the fall of anti-aircraft missiles," Soboh said. "Ending the war is the only way to end this situation," he added. Decades of discrimination Since the state of Israel was established in 1948, Palestinian citizens of Israel have complained of systemic discrimination, including chronic underinvestment, in their communities. Decades of discrimination in land and housing policies have left most Palestinian citizens of Israel living in densely populated cities and villages, leading to what Israel sees as illegal construction. Building work in these areas usually fails to meet required standards and almost never includes shelters. Since Friday, when Israel and Iran began trading fire, Israelis have been grappling with the damage caused by Iranian missile strikes in several cities, including Haifa, Tel Aviv and Bat Yam. According to data shared by the Israeli prime minister's office, missiles have broken through Israel's air defense system and struck some 22 locations across Israel. In the wake of these attacks, Israelis have largely banded together in several parts of the country. But in the nearby settlement of Mitzpe Aviv, Israelis appeared to have welcomed the missile strike on Tamra. "On the village, on the village," an Israeli settler could be heard saying in a video documenting the strike, whilst women sang the anti-Arab song "May your village burn." "These people enter Tamra and live close to it," Soboh said referring to Mitzpe Aviv's residents. "Such videos are a sign of the loss of humanity and sanity in Israeli society,' Soboh added. Doa'a Hamadi, a Tamra resident and first responder still reeling from the attack, lamented the way wider Israeli society was reacting to the video. "We die and see body parts, while a number of Jewish citizens dance in our pain," Hamadi said. "If this video had been filmed by an Arab citizen, he would have been arrested immediately." Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has said dozens of Palestinian citizens of Israel have been arrested on the spurious charge of expressing support for the Islamic Republic. Despite appeals from several Palestinian citizens of Israel, it remains unclear whether any Israelis have been arrested over the celebratory video.

Israel and Iran strike at each other in new wave of attacks

Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other overnight into Sunday, with intense cross-border missile exchanges resulting in casualties and severe damage on both sides. In Israel, a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles struck major cities including Tel Aviv and Haifa, killing 10 people and injuring 240 others, according to Israeli media reports. Simultaneously, the Iranian capital Tehran came under heavy Israeli bombardment targeting sensitive strategic locations. Iranian news agencies confirmed that the strikes hit the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, the Organisation of Defensive Innovation and Research, and fuel and oil depots, triggering massive fires and widespread destruction. Iran has said 78 people were killed there on the first day of Israel's campaign on Friday, and scores more on the second, including 60 when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran, where 29 of the dead were children. The Shahran oil depot in Tehran was targeted in an Israeli attack, Iran said, but added the situation was under control. A fire had erupted after an Israeli attack on an oil refinery near the capital while Israeli strikes also targeted Iran's defence ministry building, causing minor damage, the semi-official Tasnim news agency said on Sunday. Tehran has called off nuclear talks that Washington had said were the only way to halt Israel's bombing, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks by Israel so far were nothing compared with what Iran would see in the coming days. "If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before," Trump said in a message on Truth Social. "However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict." Trump gave no details of any possible deal. Yemen's Houthis said on Sunday that they targeted central Israel's Jaffa with several ballistic missiles in the last 24 hours. It was unclear how many buildings were hit overnight. A round of US-Iran nuclear talks that was due to be held in Oman on Sunday was cancelled, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi saying the discussions could not take place while Iran was being subjected to Israel's "barbarous" attacks.
