China proves key market for Penang as tourist visits surge in 2024, says govt rep
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang International Airport (PIA) saw a remarkable surge in Chinese tourist arrivals, with a staggering 218.86% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year, solidifying China's position as a key foreign market for the state.
State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, said the number of Chinese tourists arriving through international arrivals at Penang International Airport was 5,918 in 2022, 37,711 in 2023, and 120,245 in 2024.
"This increase proves that China continues to be one of the main foreign markets for Penang," he said during the state assembly sitting on Monday (May 19).
Wong (PH-Paya Terubong) said the state government, through its agencies, continuously strives to explore the tourism market in China through various measures, including the strengthening of direct air access through strategic collaborations with airlines to increase direct flights from China to Penang.
He said currently there were direct flights from four of the five busiest airports in China to Penang, namely from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu.
He said that between August 2023 and April this year, seven new flights have been launched from cities in China to PIA.
These include services by Xiamen Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, AirAsia, Hong Kong Express, and Sichuan Airlines.
He added that several chartered flights from China were also arranged to meet increasing demand.
He also said this proves that China continues to be a primary tourism market for the state.
He said the state government was also carrying out aggressive marketing campaigns on social media platforms and tourism websites.
"This includes participation in tourism exhibitions in China to build tourism trade networks.
"In addition, efforts are also made to advertise on online platforms popular among Chinese tourists.
He said the state government also collaborated with China's Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) and airlines, aiming to offer attractive travel packages and facilitate access to tourism sites on offer.
He said familiarisation trips are being organised for travel agents, media, and influencers from China.
"This programme is conducted to introduce firsthand experiences in George Town, Penang Hill, Balik Pulau, Seberang Perai, as well as other gastronomic attractions," he said.
He added social media platform Xiaohongshu (also known as Little Red Book) is increasingly important in tourism promotion strategies, especially to attract tourists from China and the Mandarin-speaking community.
Penang tourism is also actively promoted on Xiaohongshu. Numerous content about Penang, such as street food, heritage architecture, picturesque spots, and local culture, have been shared by users and influencers on the platform.

China FM urges ‘healthy' ties in meeting with new US ambassador
BEIJING: China's top diplomat met with the new US ambassador to Beijing on Tuesday, calling for 'healthy' bilateral ties while Washington's envoy pressed Beijing on trade, drugs and immigration as the two powers wage a tariff war. The meeting came ahead of what the White House said was a likely call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping this week, after the world's two biggest economies accused each other of jeopardising a preliminary trade deal. Beijing and Washington last month agreed to slash staggeringly high tariffs on each other for 90 days after talks between top officials in Geneva. But the United States has since accused China of violating the terms of the deal, a claim that Beijing called 'bogus' and 'contrary to the facts'. China's foreign minister Wang Yi on Tuesday said he hopes recently appointed US ambassador David Perdue 'will play a positive role in promoting the healthy, stable and sustainable development of China-US relations', according to a readout published by Beijing's foreign ministry. Wang said China opposed what he called recent US measures that 'jeopardise China's legitimate rights and interests'. Washington should 'create the necessary conditions for China-US relations to return to the right track', Wang said. Meanwhile Perdue said on X that he 'emphasized President Trump's priorities on trade, fentanyl, and illegal immigration'. Washington has long accused China of exporting chemicals used to make the fentanyl sold in the United States, which has reported tens of thousands of deaths related to opioids annually. And the Trump administration has targeted Chinese nationals who entered the United States both legally and illegally, with the president vowing last week to aggressively revoke Chinese student visas.

Trump-Xi to talk trade soon
President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will likely speak this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, days after Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Leavitt is the third top Trump aide to forecast an imminent call between the two leaders to iron out differences on last month's tariff agreement in Geneva, among larger trade issues. It was not immediately clear when the two leaders will speak. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday that Trump and Xi would speak 'very soon' to iron out trade issues including a dispute over critical minerals and China's restrictions on exports of certain minerals. Trump said on Friday he was sure that he would speak to Xi. China said in April that the two leaders had not had a conversation recently. On Saturday, the US Trade Representative's office announced it would continue to exclude certain solar manufacturing equipment and other products from existing tariffs on Chinese goods until Aug 31, offering a three-month extension while talks with Beijing continue. Bessent led negotiations with China in Geneva last month that resulted in a temporary truce in the trade war between the world's two biggest economies, but progress since then has been slow, the US Treasury chief told Fox News last week. The US-China agreement to dial back triple-digit tariffs for 90 days prompted a massive relief rally in global stocks. But it did nothing to address the underlying reasons for Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods, mainly longstanding US complaints about China's state-dominated, export-driven economic model, leaving those issues for future talks. A US trade court on Wednesday ruled that Trump overstepped his authority in imposing the bulk of his tariffs on imports from China and other countries under an emergency powers act. But less than 24 hours later, a federal appeals court reinstated the tariffs, saying it was pausing the trade court ruling to consider the government's appeal. The appeals court ordered the plaintiffs to respond by tomorrow and the administration to respond by June 9. — Reuters

China's humanoid robots gain momentum in commercial rollout
A humanoid robot walks at Zhongguancun International Innovation Center, venue for the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum (ZGC Forum) Annual Conference, in Beijing, capital of China, March 27, 2025. – Xinhua photo HEFEI (June 4): Standing 1.67 meters tall and weighing 65 kilograms, a humanoid robot named Mornine professionally introduces and recommends the latest car models to clients at a Chery automobile 4S store in Malaysia. Powered by advanced devices such as 3D lidar, panoramic camera and large language model, Mornine can autonomously plan its walking routes and promptly respond to consumer inquiries. In late April, the first batch of 220 such humanoid robots developed by Moga Technology Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Chinese carmaker Chery, was officially delivered to clients worldwide. Zhang Guibin, president of Moga Technology, said that the robots will first be deployed at automobile 4S stores, then in public service places such as supermarkets, before finally entering households. Thanks to rapid advancements in technologies such as AI and large language models, China's robotics industry is undergoing a rapid transformation from laboratory research to mass production and applications. The industry is expected to see a market boom in the coming years. According to the Chinese Institute of Electronics, China's humanoid robot market is projected to reach 870 billion yuan (about 121 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030. The deep integration of AI, 5G communications, and brain-inspired computing is driving robotics into a new phase of embodied intelligence, said Liu Hong, director of the State Key Laboratory of Robotics and Systems. Chinese robotics firm EngineAI launched two robot models on an e-commerce platform in mid-April, with its flagship model PM01 boasting 24 degrees of freedom, or the number of movable joints, and a movement speed of 2 meters per second. This robot is capable of performing complex movements such as front flips and dancing, and can even assist police officers in street patrols. 'As a high-performance hardware platform, the PM01 supports integration with a variety of developer ecosystems, making it adaptable to diverse application scenarios,' said Zhang Shan, office director of EngineAI Hefei branch. So far, the robot has already been deployed in education, security patrols and firefighting, and the target is to deliver 1,000 units this year. These smart robots are also making inroads into industrial applications. Five Kuavo humanoid robots, developed by Leju Robotics, have been introduced to the production lines of Chinese carmaker FAW Hongqi this year, where they transport boxes for long hours. 'Our Kuavo humanoid robots are primarily designed for logistics scenarios, such as transporting containers and sorting documents. The bipedal design offers advantages in moving in confined spaces or climbing stairs,' said Wang Shuai, deputy general manager of Leju Robotics Hefei branch. According to Wang, the robots are currently in the testing and development phase and they will officially start to work in factories by year-end. Regions across China are investing heavily to foster this future industry. Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, has established a 10-billion-yuan fund to promote its smart robotics industry. Similar initiatives are underway in the provinces of Guangdong, Sichuan and Shanxi. Intelligence is the main focus of Hefei's industrial development strategy for the next decade, with intelligent robots forming a key part of the blueprint, said Wang Haixia, deputy mayor of Hefei. In 2024, the output value of Hefei's intelligent robotics industry exceeded 50 billion yuan, with the number of relevant enterprises increasing by 83 percent year on year. As a new tech hub, the city is now home to over 160 enterprises across the entire robotics value chain, from R&D to manufacturing. Despite rapid progress, industry insiders widely believe that the mass application of robots still faces multiple challenges, such as an underdeveloped embodied brain and difficulty in expanding application scenarios. The smart robotics industry requires collaborative efforts to establish shared technological platforms, complete the list of application scenarios, and build a more robust industrial ecosystem, said Liu.
