Inquest to begin into death of boy, 16, found in river
A coroner is set to hold an inquest into the death of a 16-year-old boy whose body was found in the River Weaver in Cheshire. Jonty Evans was reported missing on Friday, August 30 2024, and was last seen between 10.45pm and 11.15pm on Queens Drive in Nantwich.
A significant search operation was launched, involving the use of drones and search teams around the river, with thermal imaging deployed. Jonty's body was found in the river in Nantwich on the evening of Sunday, September 1 2024. An inquest looking into the teenager's death will start at Warrington Coroners Court on Tuesday, July 1. It is expected to last two days.
The family of the 16-year-old paid tribute to him as news of his tragic death broke last year. In a statement, released via Cheshire Police, they said: "No words will ever describe the loss of our son. He was not only a son, but a friend and a brother.

"Jonty was compassionate, sensitive, brave and full of light, when he smiled it was as mountains smile to see the spring. His warm face greets me when I fall asleep and he's there the moment I wake up.
"You were ripped away from having a full and rich life and we were stolen the chance of ever having to see you grow old. This pain in our chests will never leave us and will forever be within our hearts because we love Jonty and that's something no one can take away from us.
"Tonight, and tomorrow and for the rest of our lives, we will look for you in the stars and through sunsets and remember who you were, until we meet again."
Officers involved in the investigation arrested two 16-year-olds from Crewe on suspicion of section 47 assault. in the week following Jonty's death. The pair were released on conditional bail, Cheshirelive reports.

Enquiries are ongoing on behalf of the West Yorkshire Coroner to establish exactly what happened," the statement continued. "The incident is not being treated as suspicious." In a GoFundMe campaign started soon after the incident, the fundraiser's organizer Agnieszka Czerniejewska identified the boy simply as Sebastian, writing that 'a dangerous internet challenge took his life.' 'Sebastian lost his life because of an online challenge,' she continued, specifically referencing the blackout challenge, before mentioning his family. 'His parents gave him all the love and care in the world — but that one moment online changed everything.' The blackout challenge involves choking oneself, which deprives the brain of oxygen and can result in brain damage or death. The Independent reported in 2022 that at least 20 deaths had been linked to the challenge within 18 months, with 15 of the victims being 12 or younger. 'Sebastian was only 12 years old. A boy full of dreams, passion, and incredible talent. He taught himself to play the guitar and keyboard, and he loved to draw. Always smiling, kind, and full of joy — everyone who met him was touched by his gentle spirit,' the GoFundMe stated. "He had loving parents who did everything they could to give him a safe and happy childhood. They would have given him the stars. Sadly, one brief moment changed everything,' the campaign continued. "What happened is a tragedy beyond words. No parent should ever have to bury their child. No one should ever endure such heartbreak.' The organizer of the GoFundMe campaign — which has raised over more than $4,100 to support Sebastian's parents — also encouraged other parents to 'talk to your children about what they do online.' 'Ask what they watch, who they talk to, what inspires them. Be present. Don't assume: 'My child would never do that.' The online world can be as dangerous as the real one — sometimes even more so," she wrote. "Let [Sebastian's death] be a quiet call for awareness — a reminder to stay close, to talk more, to protect the ones we love. So that other children may live. So that no other parent has to experience this unimaginable pain," Czerniejewska added. "Sebastian will remain in our hearts forever." The 12-year-old's death comes just months after the parents of four British teenagers filed a lawsuit in the U.S. against TikTok over the deaths of their children, alleging that their deaths occurred because of the blackout challenge. According to The Guardian, the lawsuit, filed in February, claimed Isaac Kenevan, 13, Archie Battersbee, 12, Julian "Jools" Sweeney, 14, and Maia Walsh, 13, died in 2022 while attempting the challenge. British police say they are reviewing comments made on stage by rap punk duo Bob Vylan and hip hop trio Kneecap at this year's Glastonbury Festival. Rapper Bobby Vylan took to the festival's third-biggest West Holts Stage on Saturday shouting 'Free, free Palestine,' before leading crowds to chants against the Israeli military. Video showed the rapper shouting into the mic, 'Alright, but have you heard this one though? Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces).' The artist also performed in front of a screen that displayed a message which read: 'United Nations have called it a genocide. The BBC calls it a 'conflict,'' referring to the UK's public broadcaster that has been showing the festival live. The Israeli Embassy in the UK said it was 'deeply disturbed' by what it called 'inflammatory and hateful' rhetoric at the festival. It said that when chants such as 'Death to the IDF' are said in front of tens of thousands of festivalgoers, 'it raises serious concerns about the normalisation of extremist language and the glorification of violence.' 'We call on Glastonbury Festival organisers, artists, and public leaders in the UK to denounce this rhetoric and reject of all forms of hatred,' it added.
