Miami High's Wilson and Doral's Vega are Dade Girls' Basketball 7A-5A Players of the Year

Miami Herald10-04-2025

Doral Academy and Miami High battled until the final buzzer this season for the right to go to state.
While several players on both sides played pivotal roles to get their teams to that point, two stood out in particular - Doral Academy's Stephanie Vega and Miami High's Sydney Wilson.
In the end, it was Vega's squad, which would go one step further and advance to the Class 7A state semifinals.
'It's always competitive but on the court in a good way,' Vega said. 'We all know each other and it's fun when we're on the court together.'
Vega has been one of the integral players who has helped Doral Academy become a consistent state title contender over the past couple of seasons.
Meanwhile, few athletes have been as versatile in multiple sports in recent years as Wilson has at Miami High.
And so, Vega and Wilson share honors this season of being the Miami Herald's Class 7A-5A Girls' Basketball Co-Players of the Year.
On an already prolific scoring squad, Vega, a junior combo guard, averaged 19.9 points per game. But Vega also handled point guard duties at times and became stronger at both ends of the floor, also averaging 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
Unfortunately for Doral, its bid for a state title was thwarted by Orlando Dr. Phillips in the state semifinals.
As part of a core of players, several of whom have played together since the fifth grade, Vega hopes to climb that final hurdle next season as a senior and bring home the school's first state championship.
'Before last year, none of us had been to state so going back-to-back was good,' Vega said. 'We would have wanted to win it obviously, but we all learned from the experience. I feel like we need to bring more energy during the whole game and not let us get down.'
Wilson was coming off an already successful season on the volleyball court at Mater Lakes Academy when she rejoined her basketball teammates at Miami High.
The Stingarees scored a win over Doral during the regular season and won 18 games heading into the regional final due largely to Wilson's leadership on the court as she averaged over seven assists per game and nearly 12 points despite handling point guard duties.
Wilson and Miami High pushed Doral to the brink before losing 55-54 in the Region 4-7A final.
'Even though we didn't make it as far as we did in previous years, I know we put in the work and made the best out of it,' Wilson said. 'Not everything is always going to go your way, but it was still a good game. We didn't lose on a bad game. We had a chance to win it and we did everything we could possibly do.'

Ole Miss' Chris Malloy, Stanford's Anne Walker win Golfweek's 2025 Coach of the Year honors

Ole Miss' Chris Malloy, Stanford's Anne Walker win Golfweek's 2025 Coach of the Year honors The 2024-25 college golf season is complete, which means it's time for postseason awards. There was a monumental upset on the women's side while one of college golf's best programs of all-time took home the trophy at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, where the championships were contested for a second time with three more years to come. However, when it comes to the Coach of the Year conversation, there are two who stood out among the rest, and they've been selected as the Golfweek 2025 Coaches of the Year. Golfweek selects men's and women's All-America teams and honorable mention selections, as well as Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year. All-America selections were released Wednesday, and Player of the Year honorees will be announced Friday. Here's a look at Golfweek's 2025 Coaches of the Year and a look at past winners: Golfweek 2025 Men's College Golf Coach of the Year: Chris Malloy, Ole Miss Malloy guided the Rebels to their best season in school history. Ranked 12th in the preseason, Ole Miss made match play at NCAAs for the first time in school history and fell 3-2 in extra holes against Oklahoma State in the semis, pushign the eventual national champions to the brink. Malloy also coached the individual national medalist, junior, Michael La Sasso, and helped Ole Miss win three times this season and finished fourth in the NCAA golf rankings. Golfweek 2025 Women's College Golf Coach of the Year: Anne Walker, Stanford Stanford just completed arguably the greatest season in women's college golf history (that's a discussion for another time), and it walks away without winning the national title or its conference crown. Stanford played nine stroke play events and won every single won, falling only in match play against Northwestern in the national championship match and to Wake Forest in the semis of ACCs. Walker constructed a roster that featured contributions from numerous players, with four players collecting individual wins this season. Perfectly timed to the French Open, Wilson has unveiled a fresh take on the 'tenniscore' aesthetic with new clay court-inspired pieces that channel the late '90s, when Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Steffi Graf dominated the rankings. Equal parts practical and stylish, the twofold drop reimagines heritage silhouettes with a modern edge—bringing the brand's illustrious history with the game to life both on and off the court. Since its founding in 1914, Wilson has built a legacy that spans generations of athletes and sports. Best known as the leading manufacturer of tennis racquets and balls, it's also the official supplier for NCAA basketball tournaments. 'Being a 111-year-old brand allows us the unique ability to pull from our own past and bring it to life in a new and iconic way,' says Joelle Michaeloff, Wilson's VP of design. 'If you look up what happened at this same time 26 years ago—you will find all sorts of cues that inspired this collection.' Take, for instance, bold color-blocking and piping that juxtaposes with the iconic terre battue (red clay) surface. The pieces also are engineered to perform under the specific demands of playing on clay. 'The clay itself can be dusty and stain, so we make sure that is not an issue for our players,' Michaeloff continues. 'We also make sure everything is light and breathable, so you cannot see sweat, and our players do not get too hot even when things heat up on court. We carefully articulate seams and engineer ventilation, so it not only performs but looks beautiful.' Ranging from $12 for socks to $128 for a dress, the assortment includes everything you could possibly need to play—hats, bags, you name it—created with vintage-inspired prints and high-tech fabrics built for elite-level hitting. It's all in the details: think stealthy zippered pockets, skirts designed to hold both a phone and a tennis ball, and a sleek 'brami' that blurs the line between bra and camisole. As far as outerwear, there's a relaxed pullover and a waterproof zip-up jacket, perfect for layering pre- or post-match, weather be damned. 'We are constantly pushing innovation and then figuring out ways to disguise it by engineering each garment to look like you could hang out or go out in it,' Michaeloff adds. Among other standout pieces is a dress worn on the court by Wilson player Marta Kostyuk herself, paired with new footwear she described as 'performing like a running shoe but helping me like a race car.' According to Michaeloff, Kostyuk plays an integral role in Wilson's design process: 'She gives excellent feedback that pushes us to make better products.' For all the aspiring pros, to quote the old saying: If the shoe fits…
