Meta Oversight Board overturns decision on AI-manipulated video post on Facebook
The Meta Oversight Board overturned the social media company's decision to leave up an AI-manipulated video post that showed Brazilian soccer player Ronaldo Nazário promoting an online game, which he did not.
The manipulated video was posted in September last year, which falsely showed Nazário endorsing the play-to-earn game. Interestingly, users were taken to a different game when they clicked the AI-manipulated video's link.
A Meta user complained about this post, but their report was not addressed and the content remained visible until the case reached the oversight board.
While the 'ad' was disabled for violating the company's Unacceptable Business Practices Advertising Standard, the original organic post stayed up. Only later was it removed for policy violations.
'Meta has a responsibility to 'mitigate adverse human rights impacts' of monetized content that could scam or defraud – in line with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. When paid to boost content, Meta should ensure these posts do not violate its policies,' noted the board in its decision.
The oversight board criticised Meta for lacking a uniform enforcement policy when it comes to celebrity endorsements. It also stressed Meta's responsibilities to users and the public when labelling or taking action against AI deepfakes, to prevent public fraud from taking place.
'Based on public reporting, the Board notes Meta is likely allowing significant amounts of scam content on its platforms to avoid potentially overenforcing a small subset of genuine celebrity endorsements. At-scale reviewers are not empowered to enforce this prohibition on content that establishes a fake persona or pretends to be a famous person in order to scam or defraud. Meta should enforce this prohibition at-scale by providing reviewers with often easily identifiable indicators that distinguish AI content,' noted the Meta Oversight Board in its post.

Vijayawada: The Government of Andhra Pradesh and NVIDIA have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance the establishment of a proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) University and foster a robust AI ecosystem through skilling, research, infrastructure development and startup acceleration. AI Startup Experts Warn Of 'Terrible Decade' Ahead As White-Collar Job Losses Loom
Researchers at artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic have warned that humanity was in for a 'terrible decade' ahead as the technology continues to replace workers through automation. Anthropic's Sholto Douglas said even if current AI progress stalls, there would be a big drop in a number of white-collar workers over the next few years "There is this whole spectrum of crazy futures. But the one that I feel we're almost guaranteed to get, this is a strong statement to make, is one where, at the very least, you get a drop in white-collar workers at some point in the next five years," Mr Doughlas said, speaking to AI podcaster Dwarkesh Patel.. "I think it's very likely in two, but it seems almost overdetermined in five. The current suite of algorithms is sufficient to automate white-collar work provided you have enough of the right kinds of data." Mr Douglas said this scenario could lead to a "pretty terrible decade" before things start to improve for the better. Trenton Bricken, a member of the technical staff at Anthropic, added: 'We should expect to see them automated within the next five years.' End of white-collar jobs Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has echoed a similar sentiment, stating that governments across the world were downplaying the threat when AI use could lead to a significant spike in unemployment numbers. "We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming. I don't think this is on people's radar," said Mr Amodei. According to the Anthropic boss, unemployment could increase by 10 per cent to 20 per cent over the next five years, with most of the people 'unaware' about what was coming. "Most of them are unaware that this is about to happen. It sounds crazy, and people just don't believe it," he said. The 42-year-old CEO added that AI companies and the governments needed to stop "sugarcoating" the risks of mass job elimination in fields such as technology, finance, law, and consulting. "It's a very strange set of dynamics where we're saying: 'You should be worried about where the technology we're building is going.'"

This collaboration will also foster a robust AI ecosystem within the state through comprehensive initiatives, including skilling, research, infrastructure development, and startup acceleration. This partnership is designed to position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in AI-driven innovation and talent development, an official release said. As a core component of this agreement, both parties will collaborate to skill 10,000 engineering students across Andhra Pradesh over the next two years.
