Watch your step: Portuguese Man-o-Wars already washing up on NC beaches

Yahoo11-04-2025

HARKERS ISLAND, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — If you're heading to any Carolina beaches this weekend, local officials are warning folks about the presence of Portuguese Man-o-Wars.
While these striking blue-and-purple creatures might look like something out of a sci-fi movie, their tentacles pack a real sting, even after they've died.
Park officials are urging beachgoers to be extra cautious when walking along the sand barefoot. And yes, that includes curious kids and overly adventurous pets!
Tempted to poke or pop that shiny blue float? Just don't. Officials strongly recommend avoiding any contact with the creatures, even if they appear lifeless. If you or someone in your group does get stung, officials say reach for vinegar, not water, to rinse the affected area.
Officials say vinegar can help neutralize the stinging cells and ease the pain.

17th annual Canaan Mountain Bike Festival to take over Davis this weekend

DAVIS, (WBOY) — The 17th annual Canaan Mountain Bike Festival is set to take place in Tucker County this weekend, and event organizers expect more than 300 bikers to come out and explore Canaan Valley and the Monongahela National Forest. The weekend will include group rides, skill sessions for bikers to improve, biking competitions, a morning session to help maintain a local trail, a hike on the Nature Conservancy's newly acquired Dobbin Slashings Nature Preserve and a dinner on Saturday night. New Dobbin Slashings Preserve in West Virginia is open to the public Other than the normal bike rides and chances to socialize, this year's event will include something a little different, a 'bike hash,' where one biker gets a 15-minute head start on the group and makes an improvised path that everyone else tries to follow. 'I've been biking a long time and it just still never gets old,' Haywood said. 'I love doing it with my friends and I like this area. It's challenging terrain and you know the weather can be wild and it's just a fun, beautiful place to ride a bike,' Blackwater Bicycle Association President Sue Haywood said. Event organizers said another unique thing about this festival is that normally bike festivals are centered around a big campground facility, whereas this one is centered around the two local towns. Crowds of people from all over fill Big Rock Landing

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is halfway over but the spirit of those out enjoying the event hasn't diminished. People come from all over to see large blue marlins weighed in at the Big Rock scales. 'It's all the community coming together even like, the locals coming in and hanging out together, just being one team,' Cape Carteret local Alex Wianecki said. Others come into town from much farther away. 'I mean, for somebody like me from an area that doesn't do anything like this, it is so exciting to see this many people and to see everybody have such a good time,' Laura Calfee of Tampa, Fla. said. Others came from the mountainous parts of the state to see the action at the coast. 'I've grown up coming to Morehead and Atlantic Beach. I vacationed every summer at the Oceania Resort and have never been to Big Rock,' Julia Rice of Snow Camp said. 'Enjoying the family and the friendship. This is my son's high school graduation trip and I don't even care if there's any fish, just being with my family and my friends.' In the final days of the Big Rock, more anticipation grows as people wait to see who the winners will be. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This trail in New Mexico will take you across the country

**Note: The southern terminus at Crazy Cook Monument may no longer be accessible due to it becoming a National Defense Area. NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A total of 3,100 miles. That's how long some people travel to conquer one of the longest trails in America. Whether hikers are just starting their trek or celebrating the end of it, the Continental Divide Trail brings many travelers to New Mexico. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail was officially established by Congress in 1978 and traverses five states, situated between Mexico and Canada. Poll: Where is the best place to go hiking in New Mexico? The hike is not an easy one, but 150 to 400 hikers will attempt an end-to-end trek each year, according to the Continental Divide Trail Coalition. Some others choose to complete portions of the trail, which also runs through Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. Focusing on New Mexico, the CDT spans about 820 miles in New Mexico from the southern terminus at Crazy Cook Monument in the bootheel of New Mexico to Cumbres Pass in the northern part of the state, next to Colorado. Hikers will pass through four of New Mexico's national forests: Gila, Cibola, Santa Fe, and Carson, and the ancestral lands of numerous Native American tribes. The Continental Divide Trail Coalition recommends completing the New Mexico portion of the trail during late September and October when monsoon season is over and the weather is cooler.
